Correction: In "The Twins" section, the script said "Coolest-Looking Star Wars Movie" but the word "looking" got cut and it's too much work to fix the audio now. I obviously meant to start a fight, just not quite that much of a fight. Sorry for the confusion. Also, First.

lol, i think we got the point, also firmly disagree. the choreography in the new trilogy sux so did the space battles, which is weird coz rogue one had the best space battle in any star wars and the Mando has some of the most weighty hand to hand; so clearly its not Disney in general. if we're talking overall, i would argue epi 3 is the best visually, opened with a rockin space battle that wasn't beat till rogue one, the visuals all fit the universe, and no matter what other shit George gets, he can direct a lightsaber fight.

It's amazing how a company like Disney doesn't understand that the reason why Robin Williams as the Genie worked so well was that Robin Williams was an amazing performer in every form of acting and not because he was a big actor, so keeps Dreamworksing every work of theirs to try and replicate that instead of hiring actual voice actors.

    • @depreseo

Fun fact about that: they wanted that to be the case in Return of the Jedi, so that when Vader activated Luke's green bladed lightsabre and says "I see you have constructed your own lightsabre" the blade, in Vader's hand, would be red. In the end that didn't happen in the film, but in the marvel adaption of ROTJ they kept it in. So just like space rabbits it's a nugget of lore :) and it was executed brilliantly in the ninth Jedi.

      @Goldenkitten1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      tl'dr - Yep.
My favorite really was Lop and Ochō (and no, not just because of bunnygirl jedi). I do agree if they didn't turn Lop and Ochō into a series my second choice would indeed be The Ninth Jedi. My reasoning for this is that the emotions of Lop and Ochō really felt far more real than The Ninth Jedi where she genuinely doesn't seem to care that her father is either dead/captured until the very last second. While we all saw it coming I will admit that the Sith reveal of The Ninth Jedi was well animated regardless. But Lop and Ochō did a much better job in my opinion of setting up not just a family unit but a world that could easily exist in the canon and a better hook for continuing it with Lop inevitably taking control of what little resistance is left and trying to fight for their freedom while also trying to reason with Ochō who has clearly become pessimistic about their existence but isn't fully lost to the dark side YET. I don't know, call me crazy the feelings of the characters just felt more real to me and I preferred the animation.
And before anyone says anything NO I am not saying The Ninth Jedi is bad, like I said it'd easily be my second choice for a full adaptation.
Lop and Ochō > The Ninth Jedi > The Duel > The Village Bride > Akakiri > The Twins > The Elder > T0-B1 >>>>>>>>>>>>> Tatooine Rhapsody ...for what it's worth...which isn't much.
Oh and before the Trigger fans flay me for putting The Twins so low please don't think I'm saying it or Trigger are bad. As my list suggest I loved pretty much every second of this anthology except the Tatooine Rhapsody. It's just that while Triggers animation was amazing, Triggers animation is ALWAYS amazing. I just felt like I was watching Promare without any of the emotion (which I understand is a time limit thing). How I ranked them is basically how much I felt for the characters emotionally and believed they could fit well into the Star Wars canon.

I had a soft spot for The Elder, I think because how it played within established lore of Jedi and Sith, sort of where The Phantom Menacr came in.
You have this ancient sith who grew disillusioned by the self destruction of his own order. But doesn't know anything differently when just surviving has taken away a point of that power and dulled it. His existence itself points to a blindspot, and is good chances that like from Maul, the Jedi's arrogance will blind them to another threat, a Phantom menace if you will.

The Elder feels underrated. Whereas Akakiri felt like it copied too much of Anakin's fall in Revenge of the Sith, The Elder used the setup of the duel between Maul vs. Qui Gon & Obi Wan and at least twisted things around to make it feel different. The episode ain't perfect, but how it used elements from Phantom Menace felt refreshing.

The Ninth Jedi fits so perfectly into the Star Wars I've always wanted to see represented, either on the big screen or small doesnt matter so long as I get to see it (even though I know I wont.)
You see, Star Wars, along with heavy influence from Kurusawa samurai films and early space operas like Lensman, also takes a deep interest in the fall of the Roman Empire, especially in the prequels. And what do we know happened after the fall of the Roman Empire? The Medieval period, where there was no centralized authority and Europe collapsed into feudalism. And sure, there were many great things that came out of these so called "dark ages," but it was still a pretty rough time in Europes history.
We kinda see this in the sequel trilogy, where there is the New Republic and there was briefly a new Jedi Order, but they for the most part are small fry compared to what they used to be. Even the First Order, while maybe the most powerful at the time, is still nothing compared to their predecessors. It sure does seem an awful lot like the Galaxy Far Far Away is descending into the decentralized, chaotic, and myth fueled period that the collapse of such a massive nation would bring about. I.E., the Galaxy is going into its medieval period.
So, from there, here's where the Ninth Jedi fits into my dream. I want a Star Wars taking place a few hundred years after the sequels. Its the same galaxy, but it is more representative of medieval Europe than roman Europe now. There are many competing kingdoms and republics and trade empires (maybe the Hutts and the Mandalorains fight with a Third Republic that has nothing to do with the original republic, a la Holy Roman Empire) over power and prestige. And amidst this, while there are still light side and dark side force users, they are far more decentralized than their past iterations. They may still call themselves Jedi and Sith, but compared to the actual Jedi and Sith they are really something much different. And all of the different light and dark side force users are living in various temples and fortresses around the galaxy, like the medieval knightly orders of yore, each with their own goals and dreams. Maybe we have some light side users who act like Knights Templar, trying to keep the hype lanes safe and protecting others, but at the same becoming increasingly dogmatic in their beliefs and increasingly oppressive because of this. Maybe some dark side Hospitallers, force users initially started to protect the weak and care for the needy, but who's anger and resentment at the injustice and cruelty of the galaxy has slowly pushed them further into the dark side to protect their wards, causing them to become more gray in their pursuit of the force due to the conflict of noble goals but angry deeds. And of course, we could have some Sith like characters who are like the Teutonic Order, an order of force users who, believing they had the one true understanding of the galaxy started conquering all of their neighboring systems led by their dark Jedi masters, killing all the "heathens" who stood in their way and forcing everyone else to convert to their religion.
And of course it can go so much deeper than that, all of these different factions of force users could have so many different goals and beliefs, and fall all over the place on the scale between light, dark and gray. And of course they could all have different allegiances as well, interacting with the nations states out there like the Hutt clan, the Mandolorians or the Third Republic. Personally I really like the idea of an order of light side users who have made their own temple on Yavin IV, and are sorta like librarian monks, collecting history from around the galaxy to try and preserve it amidst all the chaos, both dark side and light side. I think they could be a good group for our main characters to come from, as their more monk like way of living would make them be a close analogy to the Jedi we already all know and love, making it easier for them to be recognizable to use while still being clearly a product of this new Galaxy. Maybe we have a new Palawan who is possibly a little shy, but ultimately wants to do the right thing who is paired with a Master who is a bit of a rebel to their fellows due to having a known interest in the dark side, holding more inflammatory beliefs about the actual nature of the force causing them to be more of a gray Jedi than their light side compatriots.
Together these two could maybe find some sort of ancient artifact or something, which both the dark side and light side users want, as well as the various countries around them, throwing the little temple on Yavin IV into the conflicts of the factions around them, which up until now they had been so careful to stay out of. I dont know man, but I think it could be really cool, and the small nature of the group we see in The Ninth Jedi reminds me exactly how I would want that world to feel. Sabersmiths in place of blacksmiths, mystery and a sorta magical vibe to everything around them.

      @starsilverinfinity 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

This sounds alot like the Legends version of the star wars universe, where - for example - post Endor the Galaxy didnt immediately ductape itself together. Instead the New Republic coexisted alongside several imperial remnants, homegrown local governments, the Hutts, etc and even as it grew bigger over time it never was quite a galaxy spanning anything until way into the future
I always liked that about it, maybe it'd appeal to you too?

    • @georgewilliamson5667
      @georgewilliamson5667 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@starsilverinfinity Probably would in all honesty. I haven't delved to deep into the Extended Universe before, other than some passing knowledge and playing some of the games, mostly because it all became so big and bloated it felt kinda hard to access. But then again, one of the magical things about the Star Wars galaxy is that its massive, and is structured in such a way that pretty much anything you want can happen because there is plenty of room for all sorts of things *to* happen. So maybe I should dig deeper into it, find some stories that I like which fit into this idea I've always wanted to see from Star Wars.

Here is my list of favorites in order with small descriptions as to why:
1: The Duel (The style, battle, and narrative potential from the short are amazing enough to have me come back to rewatch it more times, by far my favorite of the bunch.)
2: The Ninth Jedi (The best story of the entire anthology with an open-ended ending that leaves room for a potential continuation that I would happily put money towards in order to get production.)
3: The Village Bride (The best part of the short for me was actually in the world-building and lore that could be extracted from it, the fight scene that did occur was only secondary for me as I was only interested in the lives of these natives and Jedi Observers.)
4: The Twins (This is just Trigger being Trigger and I loved it.)
5: Lop & Ocho (Probably the most beautiful looking short of the bunch that honestly would have gotten a lot higher, if only the story didn't feel like it took a hit in the process. The way that characters quickly heal turn into a different direction and motives seemed a bit jarring to me, though if this were a bit longer and gave better development for some of the characters, this surely would have been higher.)
6: The Elder (Yeah, this was pretty underwhelming, even in the fight scene it felt like something was holding the short back, although I did like the aspect in which it was approaching. This works for the last decent short I felt like was in the anthology.)
7: Akakiri (This is how to speedrun a minimum of a 30-minute psychological constructive story into a 13 minute short, which you shouldn't do. Seriously, I got severe Whiplash when watching this. And even though I do like the aspect of the dark ending, It ultimately means nothing when I don't care enough about the characters to feel anything for them when half of the run time seems to be focusing more on the comedic side-characters than the other two main characters.)
8: T0-B1 (Has really epic Lightsaber battle, but didn't have any narrative drive to really keep me invested.)
9: Tatooine Rhapsody (This one felt like it came straight from Disney for the kids, not really my cup of tea. Also they don't compare to any of my boys in The Modal Nodes.)
Let me know if any of you agree with my listing or not and I too would love to hear your options on some of these episodes as well if you care to give the time to share your thoughts.

I watched visions with a group of friends and it was an absolute blast. I will say my rankings are very different to yours.
My top three, are, in decending order, the village bride, the duel and the hunt.
On the village bride, I agree with all your points, and will emphasie again, damn that music is absolutely stunning. I will add that I like that the mentor guy is basically waling around with a rocket on his head. I wonder what other demolition grade headgear this mad man has rattling around.
The duel, once again agree with your points. A big part of placing it so high came from the awesome discussion my friends and I had on possible backstories for this mysterious ronin. Plus it's really funny to think of him reviewing his collection in a decade, looking at the one empty space. He tries to pretend that it doesn't bother him before sprinting off into the night. The kid is all grown up and real confused when the ronin runs up and demands a 1v1.
As for the hunt. personally I loved the choreography (though I agree graphic blood sprays would be a welcome addition). But the stand out for me is the interactions between master and padawan. To me it felt like what anakin qui gon would have been and that was an absolute treat.
My least favourite was... Shoot can't remember title, the bunny girl one. Mainly because I was really enjoying the fact that we got a forceless protagonist. A big part of star wars is the bounty hunters, the mandolorians, the clones and the roguish smugglers. Put simply I think a star wars anthology should have at least 1 forceless protagonist, and when bunny retrieved saber with force I really did not like it. I realise it is pretty minor problem, but we are talking about what we liked and emotions have a big role in that.
Great video, fingers crossed for ninth Jedi series.

I thought only "The Twins" was going to be one of my favorites, I was wrong. anyway, here is a list:
my 1st favorite was "the village bride". it was so mystical, something that fits so well with Star Wars
my 2nd favorite was "lop & ocho". one of my favorite things in Star Wars is non-human jedi and the relationship between the characters was so interesting.
my 3rd favorite was "t0-b1". again, because I like non-human jedi, but also because a jedi droid is a super cool concept and gave me more of a pinochio feel than an astroboy.
The 4th favorite was "The Duel". a sith ronin is a concept that works very well and the lack of blue light sabers gave it a darker vibe
The 5th favorite was "the ninth jedi". It was so aesthetically cool and the twist actually got me
The 6th favorite was "the twins". Because grievous girl...
I loved the rest too, but not as much as the others
and about the dubbing...it clearly depends on where you live, for example i'm from south america and the dubbing was really good!
(By the way, am I the only one who noticed that t0-b1 sounds like Obi Wan? something like To B one or Tobi Wan? They also had that scene with t0-b1 riding into the sunset like Anakin in episode 2... huh)

Star Wars needs more Visions, this is exactly the kind of stuff you'd expect to see from a universe as massive as the one crafted by Star Wars. I whole-heartedly welcome more entries like these. Personally, I would absolutely love what kind of one-shot we would get from Yoshihiro Togashi. As far as my rankings go for the episodes:
    1. The Twins - Going in knowing it's Trigger, expect the unexpected, and what a payoff. Agree with every point you mentioned. Reminds me of that Old Republic expansion with the twins....I think they were generically made too, correct me if I'm wrong.
    2. Lop & Ocho - Great use of the Star Wars extended universe, as you said a great stand-alone story that could also have it's own show. I'd see this one going in the direction of Outlaw Star, picking up main cast members as the plot is driven forward with each character having their own episode contributing to a larger goal.
    3. The Ninth Jedi - definitely a pilot to a 12 episode seasonal anime that would easily make it to the crunchyroll anime awards for at least 3 categories.
    4. The Village Bride - Intriguing story and designs
    5. The Duel - Loved the style and love that was put into this piece.
    6. Akakiri - story is unique from the others because it pulls on the tenants of the Jedi creed effectively.
    7. T0-B1 - loved the homage to astroboy and the Dr. who reminded me very much of Megaman's Dr. Light. Style was fun, would love to see more entries of this story.
    8. Tatooine Rhapsody - One of those where I would want 3 or 4 episodes of to see more of what the ex-youngling would do over the course of the larger plot.
    9. The Elder - reasons you said, it was an awesome looking entry that lacked story and substance however they had very interesting characters in both the elder himself and the Jedi master.

I personally had very mixed feelings on this anthology. Some of the episodes really landed for me (Village Bride, The Elder, and Ninth Jedi), other really didn't. I think one of the issues I had is that despite being an anthology, a lot of them felt very same-y. They all dealt with Jedi, most of them had a "literally just Japan, but with lightsabers" aesthetic, and the whole katana-saber thing got a little old. I am 100% down to have more Visions seasons in the future, but I hope that they mix it up a bit more.

Take for example how profoundly Star Wars science fantasy influenced the anime of the 80s through today and notable games like the final fantasy series. And how Star Wars was influenced by Kurasawa and the Japanese samurai film. And how Kurasawa was influenced by John Ford and other directors of the western genre. I didn't particularly enjoyed this series a whole lot. It's ok. In terms of the controversies, yes, The Last Jedi is terrible and the new trilogy is garbage. Now, before the heat comes up, let me justify it: I am all in for expanding the Star Wars universe. As you said it: yes, the universe it a big place, and anyone can add any new lore to it.
The beef we have with the new trilogy is because it messes with The Skywalker Saga. It was intended to be 3 trilogies, a full arc in 3 acts. And we never got the ending. It is like getting something like The Lord of the Rings and completely pissing on The Return of the King. Or the Harry Potter Saga and completely dismissing Harry and Voldemort finale just for the sake of "breaking the past" or any bullshit like that.
What's the correct thing to do: finish the Skywalker Saga the way it was intended. And add any new lore to the Star Wars Universe as you want. You can create any number of new Jedis, Siths, aliens, drama, political intrigue, in any number of eras. The New Republic, The Rise of the Empire, The Old Republic. The comics, books and videogames have been doing that for decades now. The Knights of the Old Republic is just one good example.
This new anime series is good, and it does the right thing: it expands upon the Universe, without ever having to screw with the Skywalker Saga. Leave that alone. Expand the Universe. And everybody is happy.

I'm super nostalgic for Astro Boy (it's what got my dad into anime and he passed that interest down onto me) and I cannot begin to describe how much I absolutely loved T0-B1. That short and Tatooine Rhapsody were my two favorites. I think knowing the ways that droids are looked at and treated in the star wars universe, theres something immensely satisfying about seeing one fight to become a jedi and prove himself as a hero alongside his other adorable droid friends. Plus the animation is just such a joy to watch, and T0-B1's design as a star-wars interpretation as Astro Boy is DISGUSTINGLY CUTE alongside the awesome voice acting for him on the Japanese audio track. On the flip side, I think the reason I was drawn to Tatooine Rhapsody was because of the lack of lightsabers, tbh. I love a great duel as much as the next guy, but that's all that mainline canon star wars is really about. Seeing someone leave the jedi order (which we know is kinda shit to be a part of from the prequels) to make friends and join a band?? I love everything about that. Using it as part of your stage performance is possibly the most effective use of a force jump I can think of. Honestly, part of me was kinda surprised that was the only short that decided to focus on something completely different than the main jedi vs sith or rebels vs empire conflict.

And the fact that they aren't necessarily canon means I don't have to worry about continuity, and half the dumb shit in these episodes are so anime that I don't bat an eye at them, and I like them.
Great vid. I saw your tweet of the thumbnail and was really looking forward to this.
I'd also like to really know what you would've loved to see explored anime style in this series. There's A LOT you could do with a Star Wars anime that even this doesn't even tap into.

I’m in a similar boat as you but not quite the same. This stuff just isn’t for me. I think many of these shorts would be better off as not being connected to Star Wars. There’s just way too many disconnects for me.

The Village bride was my favorite episode it had a mix of artstyle from Astra lost in space and Carole & Tuesday, it was vibrant and beautiful, the fight scene was also well animated, but most of all it gave the Z-95 headhunter some screentime post Galactic Republic era

    GOOD THING I HAVE DISNEY+.
I’m am so glad that Trigger got to contribute to Visions.
Other than that I’d be down for other studios to let the Japanese play with their IP’s if this is any indication.
Imagine a Ben 10 anthology anime focusing on alternate Omnitrix users like an episode that showed what would happen if Izuku from My Hero Academia got the Omnitrix, or if Tanjiro from Demon Slayer got it, heck maybe a lesser known character like Jason Frudnick from Blaster Master Zero getting it. How fun would it be to see characters from various Japanese media get the Omnitrix?

5:18 reminds me of the Halo animated short of the same name that tells the story of how the badge of Arbiter became one of shame amongst the Covenant. 7:11 ok but I'm a giant lore nerd and I am really attached to the smattering of legends and Disney canon ideas that constitute my head canon of the setting.
7:47 well, I think the only thing that really breaks canon there is Boba Fett crowd serfing, it's just very out of character, that and maybe Jabba's son having hair, don't think Hutts have much body hair.
10:40 one day I will have your head on a pike for this insult.
13:49 in my lore nerd opinion, it could be, I guess, but.... it would require a change in jedi/Sith culture where they stopped making their own lightsabers, which is a deeply important and spiritual act for the jedi themselves so it would perhaps be a bit immersion breaking.

All these specials were amazing and I would love to see many continue. Also, going from place to place I definitely keep seeing just how vast the reviews are for these with which ones are good or poor, some being very opposite in opinions. Everyone has their own vision of Star Wars, I suppose, and no one will ever be fully satisfied with any one thing. But having something like Visions can give such a range that anyone can find something that speaks to their vision of the franchise.

My top 3 in order would be The Village Bride, The Ninth Jedi and Lop and Ocho. The Village Bride was a treat from start to finish and I would love to see it extended into a movie and The Ninth Jedi and Lop and Ocho are straight up just calling for a full series to be made.
I'd say the lowest for me was T0-B1 and Tattoine Rhapsody, T0's animation compared to the plot had a tendency to feel like it was going a mile a minute and Rhapsody just didn't land for me.

Early reviews I only saw folks giving praise to episode 5 but I feel all episodes were good in their own right.. Definitely would like extended stories on some of these episodes. I feel marvel has been trying this anime approach but never gave actual animators enough control to incorporate themselves into the work.. Star wars visions showed what happen when they are allowed to work in their element.

Yes I'm upset at this video, because The Elder was my favorite episode!!
The dialoge felt so real and the villain felt so emotionally satisfying.
The slow pace and sudden resolution reminded me of old detective TV shows like Columbo. It all serves to tell an interesting lesson about humanity.
(maybe watch it in dub : ?)

personally, I'd have put "Lop & Ocho" at the top, mainly because of the way it weaves so many Japanese story elements into the "Star Wars" universe. from the concept of family being more than blood through the loyal retainer/adopted family member proving to be truer to traditions than the apparent heir, it does an outstanding job. for the same reason, I loved "The Village Bride" for it's take on the old Japanese traditions of sacrificing a young girl to appease a vengeful spirit/local protective god. "The Duel" was nice, with it's harking back to early samurai movies while adding the twist that the 'savior ronan' has a far darker past than anyone in the village imagined. behind those, I'd probably put "The Ninth Jedi", but you could list the rest any way you felt like, because none of them really impressed me.

While watching them I was thinking “the 9th Jedi”, “the elder”, and “lop and Ocho” were interesting concepts that would make good series. Those last two would be perfect as miniseries or limited series following the two main characters in each ending with the master’s death for the elder and the sisters coming back together or one of their deaths in lop and ocho.

Just watched your video and binged the whole thing at work. I think it's not only great star wars, but an awesome way to introduce anime to people who haven't given it a chance. I love that every short has it's own unique style. I do wish some episodes were fleshed out more, like Akakiri. But yeah, this is the best star wars stuff since Disney bought it easily. Btw they fixed the subtitles
