The problem with Levy having 1.8M subscribers now is that these "rarely played" openings are now played by 1.8M people. And this goes for the Vienna, the Vienna Gambit, etc, etc. You can actually tell that you are playing a Levi's subscriber when they use these not-rare-anymore weapons :) I mean, this is a great tribute to the amazing influence that Levi has, but it has its downsides :)

This line is straight up powerful. Unlike other gambit trap lines like for example the Intercontinential Ballisctic Misslie Gambit, it isn't easy for the opponent to deal with, and a lot more of your opponents will play the moves you want. I've played the Englund Gambit many times, and a large majority of my opponents accept the gambit and fall for this trap.

I love when players play this. More often than not at the 900-1000 level, when I don't immediately fall for the gambit they're not prepared well enough for the alternative play, and they're forced to play down a piece with their queen over extended and it often results in me just wiping them out.

I'm really low rated and it kinda pisses me off when beginners literally memorise strategies.
Met a few players who very clearly took their time to learn many ways in which you can checkmate in a few moves.
Since I'm a beginner, I couldn't play any moves which felt obvious and had to play unpredictably to avoid falling in their traps.
In midgame they were all SHIT. Wonder why.............. yeah. They are really annoying.

personal favorite with the englund is- white takes pawn, dev dark bishop to the 5th rank, they protect pawn with knight, move queens pawn to 6th rank, if they take pawn sac the night. if they take than deliver check with the bishop (brilliant move) king is forced to take, and then you can take whites queen. essentially icbm but as black.

Also worth checking out are the Blackburne-Hartlaub/Hartlaub-Charlick Gambit variations within the Englund: you essentially gambit a second pawn with ...d6 after dxe5, recapture with the DSB, and then develop for a quick Queenside castle. If White castles in some lines, you can sac the DSB with a move like Bxh2, which usually opens up a discovered attack on the White Queen after White is forced to play a move like Kxh2. Still pretty trappy but you're in a much better position to play chess if the opponent doesn't fall for some of the most common traps and blunders versus the traditional Englund or the Rosen pre-move trap line.

Those games perfectly represent the problems of memorising some tricky line or how to counter said line because as soon as you run out of moves you still are a beginner and lose any advantage you gained, particularly when you play against a player 1000+ points stronger than you.

    • @FreeIX

6:00 According to the engine, the move Rb3 is also pretty good here -- at depth 34, it's +3.01 to Nd5's +2.51 -- and it's in some way an "obvious" way to kick out the Queen so might be easier to remember. And the only way for black to survive that is to go Qa5 -- even going slightly further to Qa6 is about 5 points worse. The other nice thing about Rb3 is that, once the Knight moves, it supports c3 as a way to pawn-block any future checks from Qa5 (or Ba5).
6:09 Interestingly, that's actually the second-best engine move. It prefers (albeit only by 0.4) trading off the dark square bishops, since they can't play Nc7+ if you've Bd2+ checked them first. It seems like that lets the black queen just hang out there on a3 for a while, since there's not really a good way for white to attack it. But black should still remember Kd8 as the apparently-best way to avoid Nc7. (There are other ways too, like Qxa2 to claim a pawn and turn the fork into a rook trade, but that just delays it as once the white rook moves, black still needs Kd8 -- or, better, Rb8 -- to avoid the fork.)
