Hi Bruce, thank you for this great video. I am a first timer in photography and photo editing. I decided to jump straight into Darktable as my first photo editing software despite the reviews that it is difficult to mater. Your videos, tutorials and tips make it easy to adopt. Thank you!
Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos.....I'm coming back to darktable after being away for about a year. It seems there have been a lot of changes in the past year.
At about 12:30 re Rapid Photo Downloader: I had followed your advice (from a much earlier episode) to use RPD (using PhotoMechanic when running Win) because the import functionality in 3.0 (where I came in) to 3.4 was not quite adequate. Now after a couple of film rolls on 3.6 I can do everything I want in dt (especially file renaming and addition of sequence numbers based on the out-of-camera image name) and relinquish RPD (excellent product though it is) and PhotoMechanic (overkill for what I needed plus more than 10 years old.....). So I strongly agree with your view that the developers have done a great job.
Great video. Just installed version 3.6. Edited photos from a golden wedding. Have had issues with incoming sunlight from windows behind the host couple. Have been very excited to use the program. For indoor editing, noise removal, shadows and highlights as well as the very effective color contrast have been used in particular. However, had a problem exporting images that my antivirus blocked for this. Only when I restarted my PC did I find out the problem.
Thank you, Bruce, for a great intro to the new features. Just a little comment.... in the import and copy dialogue... if you clik on the column header with the preview... all photos gets shows as previews.
Your videos came up just at the right time. Opened Darktable this morning, and wondered what I had done to it! It had updated to 3.6 and your videos stopped me panicking. When I'm tagging my photos now, the tags don't show unless the cursor is over the picture, and I can't create a tag preset. Thanks for the amazing walkthroughs of Darktable, I'm working my way through them.
You're welcome, Sheena! When you say the tags only show when you mouse over an image, that is the standard behaviour in darktable (all versions, not just 3.6).
23:00 Your enthusiasm with tagging always gets me!!! 😂 (And I agree: the tree view [in a previous version] was a game-changer for me and this option for rearrengements is the cherry on top. I'll may never have the energy to go back to my jpg photos before Darktable, but it sure makes me want to)
Yeah, my collection of digital images was around 10,000 when I realised how important tagging was. And as much as I hated the idea, I knew it made more sense to just knuckle down and tag them all, because if I didn't, it was only going to get worse as I shot more images. So I spent a month tagging those first 10k images, and have then maintained it ever since.
Thank you for all the time you put into the Darktable videos! When ever I get to a blockage point I know I can always look for an answer in your videos. Looking forward to Part 2, the Darkroom is where I live!
Loving the new features, some where not obvious, so thanks for pointing them out. Just a quick note, in the single view mode, users can control what they see using the bottom arrow, I think it's worth mentioning that, since you only covered the escape key, the arrows is something that some new users miss, and they are handy. Anyway, great video, again, as always, cheers mate.
Toggle sticky preview, which you mentioned at the end still has a shortcut, but it changed from Alt-w to f for some reason. I promptly changed it back :-). And there is still w for a preview that only lasts while pressing the key.
That geotagging synchronization tool is game changing. I had a wedding shot on 3 cameras and one was about 5 minutes different from the other two (belonged to my 2nd) and I spent a day just figuring out how to synchronize the images using third party software because Capture One has nothing like this. It was painful. This is a super helpful feature to have.
13:54 what about "override today's date"? It's odd it isn't a check box; in stead of that, it is a text box. What is suppose to be written there when you want to use that option?
You know how in Collections, there's a metadata type called Jobcode? I think if you use a value in the "import job" naming field, that then becomes something you can search using the jobcode metadata. I THINK. :)
In addition you can select as many of the single 'eye' images as you want: the thumbnails remain toggled open until they are individually clicked again.
Excellent introduction to the new features (as usual!). I do have a question about your photo organizing system - Am I correct that your system is(at its simplest) primarily Subject Folder/Date, and you use tags to further define similar images? For example, say you flew here to Virginia to photograph Shenandoah National Park, and you took several scenics, and waterfall photos. When you sorted/stored them, you would have a parent folder ShenandoahNP with a sub folder 08/09/2021, then when you import photos into DT you would tag them 'landscape' or 'waterfall'? I am thinking of the scenario that 10 years from now you remember you took a really nice waterfall photo, you think was at Shenandoah NP but you can't remember, but you could look via tags (which would show all your waterfall photos) to find it, or do you have further child folders? I'd be interested in knowing how you set up your system to easily find stuff. As for your videos - they are the best of the lot! I still struggle a bit with DT but with the new 3.6 release, I've stuck with the scene referred workflow and found it is much easier. Keep up the good work!!
Found an excellent solution to my question - and you answered it about 90+ videos ago - Rapid Photo Downloader. Sets up the file system by date that I want, adds a job code to the folder that I choose, and done! Nice that I can 'download' and organize photos in folders already on my hard drive so I won't have to do that manually. thanks for the great (old!) tip! Now if we can convince the DT team to just incorporate this app into DT we'd be golden!
Thing is, the new import dialogue box in 3.6 does what RPD does, so...we're already there! As for your first question about folder structure, you nailed it, except I don't even have a subject name as a parent folder. What I DO have though, is parent folders for different TYPES of shoots. I'm sure you'll have seen in one of my videos somewhere along the line, that I have folders for family photos, commercial shoots, personnel projects, boudoir, etc. But inside each of those, the folder structure is a simple (year)/(year)-(month)-(day) hierarchy. And yes, I tag every single image I import. That sounds tedious, but once you get into the swing of it, it becomes quick and easy and just a part of your workflow. And it will save your butt more times than you would believe!
Thanks Bruce, So after you edit your photos with DT, where do you store them along with their sidecar files? Do you store them in their source folder, the default folder that DT creates, or some other? And do you keep the original name of the images? right now I am using RPD and having it use the existing name of my image (P127965 for example) with an M on the end (P127976M) for Master, so I won't confuse the completed DT image with the original.
For me, I tell darktable the folder heirarchy I want, and it then obeys that command. The xmp files sit alongside the image files, in the folder into which they were imported. Nope, never rename my image files, simply because I always have the tags.
This announcement for 3.6 is promising: "Preliminary work toward full support for CR3 has begun. darktable’s exif support can now read CR3 files if the proper exiv2 library version is found."
@@audio2u The just released 3.6 (Windows) version still not importing native CR3 files I'm afraid (based on a simple test just run with my 90D). Does this mean that the required library didn't make it into the Windows build? This is a real frustration for the increasingly large number folk with the newer Canon gear. Great summary Bruce (this plus part 2 - just watched). Keep up the good work.
No Paul, as I understand it, exiv2 still doesn't have .cr3 support, but it is close. I think I saw suggestions that it was expected before the end of the year.
This is brilliant thanks Bruce. The variables thing maybe helpful as well, does that mean I can change the names of RAWs when I bring them in as it annoys me that I have images with the same number from different cameras and/or when I go from 9999 to 10000 and it resets to 0. Cheers
Thanks Bruce, I've been looking forward to your help with this new version. When can we expect part 2? I'm trying to get my head around the new colour balance rgb and would love your input on it.
Part 2 will be out in the next 24 hours. That's the good news. The bad news is that I don't go into this module in depth. That will come later with a dedicated episode.
@@audio2u thanks for the reply Bruce. Looking forward to part 2. I'll keep reading the manual and trying to get my head around it. So far I'm really liking the update.
Thank you for your hard work! It is very much appreciated. I have a question on exporting to jpg from raw. DT has it's own preview of how a jpg should look like and that is sometimes totaly fine. Is it possible to export from raw with those settings? This would cut my workflow time in half. Thanks!!!
No. What you are seeing is the in-camera jpeg preview. But once you open the RAW file in the develop window, that preview is discarded and you see the raw data. Your best option would be to shoot RAW+ jpeg and use the jpeg.
Hi Bruce I am somewhat confused by the change to the Import process. "Copy and Import" has me thinking that I will be doubling up on image storage. I have a few scripts running (designed by a friend) which create a hierarchy under the name of my import folder. So, I remove the SD card from my camera and connect it to my computer In my Working directory (on an SSD for speed) I hit F19 and type in the Parent folder name as yyyymmdd-modelname, as soon as I hit enter the hierarchy is created the children are RAW jpgfromcamera and Exported. The children of Exported are FullSize Proofs and Instagram. I copy my RAW files to the RAW folder, and I copy the camera jpgs to the jpgfromcamera folder. I process or cull images and then get to work in Darktable, importing only from the RAW folder. When my (ex camera) RAW files are loading into the RAW folder a script is sending a copy of those to a folder in an external USB drive as a "mirror". Is DT is also creating a duplicate set of my RAW files somewhere else? Once I have finishing processing and exporting my images to the three folders, I delete the "jpgfromcamera" folder, I move my RAW files to a RAID drive and my Exported folder to a Google Drive. I format the SD card in camera when all of my RAW files are safely in three places. I hope that DT is not going to mess with my process. Cheers from a grateful guy Andrew Greig
Hey Andrew, sounds like a great system you've got going on there. All the new "copy and import" feature is doing is allowing you to mount your memory card (via a USB slot on your desktop/laptop), and then COPY the images you select from your source media (the SD card) to whatever folder you have designated as your DESTINATION (in the naming fields at the bottom of the dialogue box). Now, based on your current workflow, what it WON'T do is separate the RAW and jpeg images into separate folders. But you could quite easily set up 2 different import presets... one to import the RAW files, and one to import the jpegs, all with predefined folders. Although, you would need to modify the lowest child folder according to your model's name for each shoot, but you're doing that already, so, no biggie, right? Hope this makes sense.
@@audio2u thanks Bruce for such a prompt reply. So to get my head around this, I would create the hierarchy , and then copy all images into the RAW directory for the model name, and once DT has copied them all across I could pull the jpgs into the jpgfromcamera folder. Or I could ignore jpgs and just copy from the card. They are only a backup in case the worst happens. Otherwise I would shoot RAW only. What is the benefit to DT in this approach?
Not a benefit to dt.... it's a benefit to you. Using the variables, you can automate the folder creation as well as the file ingest (from memory card to computer)... saving you time.
I'm sure you'll be covering it soon, but the first issue I've had with the new version is adding modules to the quick access panel, can you cover this? Thank you so much for the video as always, makes things a heck of a lot easier.
@@audio2u the global tone map been depreciated before this release. They say use filmic RGB but it looks different. www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/module-reference/processing-modules/global-tonemap/
I wish 2 things. 1- that the overwrite option for pasting history had a warning. 2- that the tags could be used by Instagram; at this point, I have no other need for tags.
As always your effort in putting together these videos is really appreciated. They are timely and extremely helpful. I tried the import tool and am having trouble getting the import photos into the correct directory. I went fora walk yesterday and took some shots that i would like to add to an existing directory " D:\My Pictures\2021\Montreal". I entered this string into the box for "Base Directory Naming Pattern", and then performed the export. Instead of inserting the new files into this existing directory, it created a new directory "My Pictures2021Montreal" for the new files. I thought the problem might be that I was using the name of an existing directory, so tried the same thing with "D:\My Pictures\2021\Montreal2". Low and behold darktable created a new directory "My Pictures2021Montreal2" Can you have any ideas about what went wrong? Any thoughts about how I can add files to an existing directory?
@@audio2u Thank you very much. This worked. Entering the string "D:\My Pictures/2021/Montreal" into the box for "Base Directory Naming Pattern" produced the desired result.
How do I move my image to darkroom - Previously it was select & import image to darkroom but now it says add to library. Sorry I am a loos to move to dark room. Thanks
You don't "move" an image to the darkroom. You import it into darktable, which brings it into the lighttable view. Then, you simply double click on it to load it into the darkroom for processing.
@@audio2u I meant - open in darkroom. I copy and import the folder. Then selected the file to work on. Nothing happens when double click on it. So unable to open in darkroom enabling me to edit on the photo.
That's weird! Sounds like something is not working properly on your system, as a double click SHOULD open the image in the darkroom. I would suggest logging in to github and opening a bug report.

The tags being used by Instagram is a failing of Instagram, not darktable.
It's simple to include tags in the exported image.
Low and behold darktable created a new directory "My Pictures2021Montreal2"
Can you have any ideas about what went wrong? Any thoughts about how I can add files to an existing directory?
Sounds like you're on Windows 10, yeah? And which version of darktable?
@@audio2u Windows 10 - Darktable 3.6.0
Just had a thought...try changing the back slashes to forward slashes. Because darktable originated in Linux, it might need forward slash.
@@audio2u Thank you very much.
This worked. Entering the string "D:\My Pictures/2021/Montreal" into the box for "Base Directory Naming Pattern" produced the desired result.
Is there an option to preview the pictures in the import screen instead of just file name?
Yes, that was covered in episode 095. The new import dialogue had a preview column.
@@audio2u oh OK. I must have missed it. Thanks.
3:05 no it can not, with "uniform mask" it doesn't work, and makes sense it doesn't.
Right. Thanks!
yep....at 14:10 its my birthday
Haha... nice!
