  • In this Head Sculpture I'm going to show the Planes of the Head. I have decided to make my own reference models to facilitate sculpting. I'm using PVC pipes and Foam boards as the armature and applying J-Mac Clay Firm in this sculpture.

    I am a beginner in sculpture, and your work impresses me a lot ! I try to train a bit every day on my own and find videos that could answer my questions and yours helped me a lot !
    I hope to become at least as gifted as you one day ! :)

      Thanks Shirley! You won"t believe how many sculpting tools I have, but I find my self using the simplest things like a spatula or a piece of wood to sculpt the forms and they seem to be more effective.

    That blue foam board that you use, what brand and where did you get it? Oh and how thick is it?

    • @Liberty_Valance
      @Liberty_Valance  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The brand is DOW. It is about 1/2 inch thick and I purchased it from the Lowe’s hardware store.

      Thank you for your comments! People have different taste in music. One way to enjoy the long videos with music is to open another browser tab and from TH-cam play your favorite music while viewing the sculpting video.

      Exactly. Not sure why tubers ever mention this since it's so easy to fix. The only thing I'd welcome would be your own comments as you work...but that might ruin the experience for you :).

    • @Liberty_Valance

      This was sculpted using an oil based clay that stays soft always and is not fired in a kiln.

    what is the make and model of your foam cutting tools?

    • @Liberty_Valance
      @Liberty_Valance  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Green one is by "PROXXON" and it requires a Transformer also by PROXXON. Transformer model is NG 2/S, not sure about the red hot-wire didn't have a marking on it. Check Amazon for hot wires.

    What’s that fiber plates you used sir?

    • @Liberty_Valance
      @Liberty_Valance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what you mean by "Fiber Plates", but if you are asking about the foam stacked together, it is a foam insulation used in building construction. I purchased it from Lowe's Hardware Store.

    I’ve been using styrofoam heads (wig displays) for my base. Any thoughts as to why you chose this route? Using the pre made styrofoam heads is a lot easier and less time consuming but I’d imagine you get more of a desired shape from your technique

    • @Liberty_Valance
      @Liberty_Valance  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The foam boards I got from Lowe’s were around $12.00 for a 4’X8’ sheets. I could make several busts with it and easier to secure it to my sculpture’s wooden base using the PVC pipes.

  • @KatherineLWince
    @KatherineLWince 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    do you fire these busts?

    • @Liberty_Valance
      @Liberty_Valance  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, these are sculpted from an oil based clay that is not fired in a kiln and it always stays soft.

    • @KatherineLWince
      @KatherineLWince 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks so much for your reply. I have always wanted to work with clay, always to sculpt busts. But I had never had the chance. So, how do you protect them from being damaged?

    • @Liberty_Valance
      @Liberty_Valance  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My pleasure! You should start doing it. It is a very relaxing art. If you are displaying it on a shelf, not much of a protection needed. If you want a “slight” accidental rub off protection, you can brush Elmer’s wood glue on it.

    • @KatherineLWince

      I am a brad new artist who only went to opening receptions for FOOD! No idea that I could do art at all until 2013. I think I have put it off, because I do not want to suck at it. But, I do have a box of clay sitting in my living room.
      Funny, I found some huge styrofoam rectangles, that I thought I would use, as you did for the base. Your choice of styrofoam is what led me to your site.
      All the best, and thanks for the encouragement, ha ha, you never know!!!
      Always,
      Kathy

      lol... there are times that we artists go through the, as Ryan Kingslien say, “VALLEY OF THE SUCK” and I have had my share of it. So we can avoid staying in that valley for too long by studying and practicing more. Happy sculpting.
      Cheers!
