- My British mum just had her first-ever visit to China, and WOW, what an eye-opener! As a British mum, she grew up hearing so many negative stories about China from the Western media, but nothing could have prepared her for the REAL experience of being here.
From the incredible hospitality of the locals to the rich culture and mind-blowing food, everything she’s seen firsthand completely contradicts what she was led to believe. The media paints such a one-sided, often misleading picture of China, and she can’t help but wonder why?
In this vlog, my mum shares her honest thoughts on what surprised her the most, the differences between perception and reality, and why she believes more people should visit China and see it for themselves. This country has so much to offer, and it’s time to challenge the misconceptions!

If you visit China as a tourist the whole trip is propaganda. If you want to know what China is really like - live there.
Travelling makes people actually wiser and less pathetic and ignorant in their own beliefs and bubbles.
I’ve always reassured myself to stop paying too much attention to these people’s comments, they just like to have an opinion of things they want to resent at all cost, regardless because that’s what indirectly makes them feel better about themselves.. but sometimes, just ignoring and not actually doing anything leads to more ignorant people and clowns like Trump ends up taking over on them because these also happen to be that easily manipulated with an ideology that spread hatred, and hatred can only come from ignorance.. from not knowing things around us enough.. that’s a very stupid behaviour actually and that’s why people should never skip proper Education.

Wow what a lot packed in to one day! Some culture, some history, good food and a bit of friendly boogying with the locals. Love how social everyone is - even on a cold winter evening everyone is out together.

Suzhou city has a history more than 2,500 year old, it means, the ancient city was surounded by walls that had four gates. What you saw was one of the four gates. Suzhou was known in ancient China as the capital of silk, city of cannels, and city of gardens (due to its mild weather, and retirement designation for the rich and famous people ). Enjoy!
Originally Suzhou had eight gates and each gate was composed by a land gate and water gate, which was unique among all China's ancient cities.
Visited last year. So beautiful. Unfortunately it was cloudy and rainy when we were there. Glad to see you had the sunny blue sky for your visit. Can’t wait to visit again!
Elderly people in China rarely suffer from depression because of such rich community activities. The lively scenes you can see everywhere are our ordinary daily lives. In such a life, where does the loneliness come from? I can't stand the cold interpersonal relationships in Europe. Maybe this is what your mother couldn't adapt to the most after she returned. If you live in China long enough. She will have a rich and exciting old life of her own and will make many friends.

In ancient China, almost every city that has a name with a Zhou 州, they are heavily guarded military cities, which is the political center of the area. There were high city walls with watch towers, most of them are over a thousand year old. The Zhou 州 spread out across the occupied lands, and counting the number of Zhous 州 can tell how big the territories were. Through out two thousand years many of the city walls were distructed during war time, or being taken down for the modern city transpotation. There are many cities still have the city wall and gates preserved as it used to be, others might just have a little section left.

My City, Changzhou, also has City wall and part of the canal and beautiful gardens, my city is 20 minutes away from Suzhou by bullet train.

This place in China definitely has the unique attractions, experiences, arts and culture that are different compared to the big cities. It's really worth the visit.

nice, your mom getting the full experience. I kinda felt like some of the stuff you guys passed on when it was just the two of you but going all out for mama jo 😆. haven't been to suzhou in quite a long time so I'm surprised they kept it pretty rustic. a lot of the ancient towns are getting full facelifts nowadays and that kind of takes away from the 'ancient' charm imo.
I had been to this city four times, but still didn't walk up the wall, as there were so many places to see and experience in Suzhou!

BTW, the dish you referred as squirrel fish may better be translated as “pine cone fish” as the fish meat are cut to look like a pine cone. I think the confusion arises from the fact that the sound of the first letter of pinecone and squirrel in Mandarin are the same. 😊

On a different note, if a large crowd were to sing and dance publicly in late evenings in the UK or the US, the police would have either arrested them or dispersed them because they would be seen as a nuisance to the peace.

The Chinese government did the right to waive visa , especially those from the western hemisphere. Besides generating income for its people , it also allowed foreigners to see for themselves what China really is. No country is perfect. China definitely had a peaceful, and secure environment for those who enjoy the beauty of its landscape.
Nice video! Glad your mum is enjoying her rice and fish. A tip on eating rice: it is extremely hard to pick up fried rice using chopsticks even for native Chinese. I normally would use a spoon or pick up the rice bowl if eating with chopsticks. It is perfectly alright and is the correct table manner for Chinese. In fact some older generation Chinese would say it is impolite to pick up rice grains using chopsticks by not holding the bowl up.

The embroidery technique is the best in the world. I have seen they can do different patterns on 2 sides, like on one side there is the front of the cat, on the other side, it embroidered the back of the cat. I still can’t figure out how they do it.

Welcome to my hometown, Suzhou (苏州）。It is one of the best cities in the world, isn’t? The city structure hasn’t changed since its buildup over 2500 years ago. It has 8 famous guarding walls (locals call them guarding doors to keep invaders out) including land doors and water doors since ancient times. Most of these guarding doors have been kept. The one you visited is called Pan Men (盘门）😊. Enjoy your time!
