The Rolling Stones are...on a roll...with another new single called "Mess It Up". Quite a few of you have asked whether I think Mick Jagger is using autotune so I'll have a listen and tell you what I think. Can they still create music as good as Exile on Main Street?

Can i go off topic a bit bro?
Those lycra dick cut jump suits man, is it time to hang those up?
Just askin, 100% not trolling.
Just keep seeing dr rockso (metalocalypse)
I dunno, your the rocker, what do i know 🤷🏼
Back in my box 👍🏻
Will you be coming to Los Angeles by any chance?
Renfield is a brilliant film go see it
@@jeffmunkynutz1568 Nooooo!
Ahhh alright alright 😂
Jeez!!!!
took my sister to see them at Anfield on the last tour-she is a lifelong fan but asked "why are they still touring" to which I said "hold that thought".At showtime on come Mick n Keef blasting out Street Fighting Man and the whole stadium stood up -the electrciity would have kept the grid going for a week.I turned to our kid and said"thats why"-2.5 hours later they are still banging out classics with an energy that would put a punk band to shame.Unbelievable.
I've seen them twice. Anfield last tour and one in London on the last tour.
Both were phenomenal and probably the most charismatic shows I've seen
Went to same show with 2 people who were not huge fans- that changed after the last song
Stones go on because that's who they are.they do it because they can.
Jim Morrison went wildly off key frequently, especially on LA woman. I shutter to think to think of him being autotuned.
Sure with 20 back up musicians and singers and Keith playing the first two bars of each song and then laying out except for an occasional swipe at the strings. They were great in their day. This isn’t them.
Justin manages to play sultans of swing for 14 minutes whilst talking about the stones . Respect
Yeah Justin’s blowin double four time!
He’s got a daytime job. He’s doin’ alright
he knows all the chords
Not strictly rhythm though is he
Man. That was immediately in my head.
They inspire me to live life as long as I can as intensely as I can. Mick, Keith and Ronny could take their money and fade away onto an island in paradise but they choose to record and perform at high levels. I could learn from this attitude.
Who could even imagine living the life they have lived and all the memories. 😊
I was there 17 October 1973 for Brussels Affair at Vorst National….Billy Preston on keyboards, Steve Madaio on trumpet, Trevor Lawrence on Saxophone and, of course, Mick Taylor on lead and slide….the greatest Stones lineup ever…..but I must say this latest album is 👌…..thanks Justin 🥂
Great lineup- Mick Taylor and Billy Preston!
When I was young in the 70's we used to crack jokes about geriatric rock. And then we grew up. I think there's still a part of me that believes rock should be for young people. but then I listen to my old faves jamming and then I remember that music is for everyone always.
Listening to Rock n Roll is what keeps us young. I'm 59 and I'll still belt out Zep songs while driving down the road. No shame whatsoever. 😂
Right before I watched this, I watched the Charismatic Voice analyze the Nirvana cover of Where Did You Sleep Last Night. She said she’d rather a performance move her than be perfect. She’s the expert and I agree.
She was being nice!
@@allthings1150do you disagree? That performance is spine tingling and an absolute stone cold all time great.
This album sounds like 2023/2024 (through a Stones lens) and 1982 all at the same time. It’s full of life, too. I think that’s why it has been so successful, especially in Europe.
Yeah, I agree, it harkens back to the Tattoo You/Emotional Rescue era.
Reminds me a bit of Voodoo Lounge too which I really enjoy.
I love it. I was never a Disco guy but a great groove is a great groove and Mick sounds great.
You're right. noththing like natural singing, the voice being the instrument you are born with. As a medium to transport true emotion.
"I prefer to hear dissonance".... excellent & I agree totally.
“Mess It up” is so fresh and great wich i can’t stop listening. Mick’s vocal is stunning on this song.
Justin, I have seen you critique about 3 or 4 songs thus far. I enjoy watching and listening to you. I am not a musician so I am amazed at how quickly you pick up on the chords. I have followed the stones since 1972ish along with my neighborhood friends. Always a fun time. Thanx for keeping it fun!
Hi, Justin! Just wished to thank you for sharing your amazing talent, creativity and humour. Same goes for the band. 🤗
Big Hugs from Argentina.
Thanks for the smashing review. The Stones deserve grace. I think they've proven themselves, everything now is a massive bonus.
Enjoyed your reaction ,to Mess It Up. A little disappointed, that you didn't mention, the incredible drumming of Charlie Watts on this track. Performed, in his late 70s, it's as good as anything, he ever did. What a way to go out.
Sam Phillips (Sun Records) said, "the best recordings are perfectly imperfect". He also said most of his recordings were the first take. Capturing the energy like "lightning in a bottle"
Well Sam Philips was an absolute genius that one´s not going to finde again in this field.
Justin. I’ve never listened to your show before. My loss. This is really great. Can’t wait for more. Thanks!!
Not a Stones related comment, but (The) Sweet is one of my favorite bands from the decade of our birth. Did they influence you and The Darkness? Both bands have amazing vocals, killer riffs and licks and a healthy dose of humor. Was there even a funnier dude cranking out the rock like bassist Steve Priest?
Love your channel, Justin. Years ago when your sophomore album came out, I was a RAWK JOURNALIST and praised that album to the skies. “Knockers” is a stone cold classic. Thank you for your insights and music, my dude.
Could definitely imagine a Nicky Chinn-produced Darkness record
@@daverice2426on a similar note, that idiot Pete Waterman a few years ago.bragged about his s.a.w artists.and said no one else could do what they did with so many hits for people ...but Nicky chinn/Mike Chapman had loads of hits for acts under the rak label in the 70s.. smokie, hot chocolate,Suzie quatro, mud, among others and as u mentioned the sweet..so p.w should "know" his music history
The riff you’re figering out, sounds a little like one from Sultans of swing .
I love how you figure out these tunes,I’ve chord bashed for years and would love to do that.
I heard the same thing and hoped someone in the comments had noticed it also.
Justin has a real talent for music. Love these vids and the darkness
The biggest standout thing about this song (or the other single) is that they actually shot a big budget videos in times when even AAA artists are mostly doing lightshow performance videos, modestly cheap CGI or lyric videos.
Sometimes straight up dissonance works, sometimes perfect harmony works. I love both. Both can be equally moving. Can't imagine "Hello It's Me" by Todd Rundgren full of disharmony, even though the singer is a little melancholy.
Funny you should say that, because I think even The Darkness' most intense songs are still quite melodic.
You are a breath of fresh air. Thank you for you.
Love this album, and I love your analysis!
Saw them play St Mary's a couple of years ago and they blew the doors off, completely smashed it
My mom showed me how to work a record player when I was a kid in early 70s and the record was a 45 Rolling Stones Brown Sugar a yellow circle with a set of red lips and it was my introduction to a world that I could never imagine of music! Mom is now gone but the music and memories will live forever.
Led Zep is a good example of how organic music moves much more... Beato gave an example by adding a metronome to Levee Breaks, it wasn't synchronized to the grid, but that's what created movement and felt so nice. However, u have to be such a gifted performer, same with voice.
Beatos takes r always gr8 & inspiring
get rid of the grid
@@neboknenim9429can you please spell out your words like an adult? U r not 12 yrs old.😅
I got so thrown off by that piece of tape on the hat, I had to start over the video 😂 ... .... I see what you did there... 🤭
For 42 years since I was 10 I have been listening to the Stones, and for me now the best are the1983 undercover album as well as the 1985 dirty work album, the albums before are bound to their time, the two I mention are timeless and honest, have the best sound, diversity, ideas and energy. The albums after 1985 are more in memory of the time passed for lack of a better word
That is quite the unpopular opinion! I disagree but I must admit those albums contain some of my favorites tunes by the Stones, including "One Hit (to the body)", such a gem of a song!
@@virgilelegrand8020 my opinion is not meant to be popular ( I know what all the experts are considering great ), that is what I feel while listening to music. The songs like "all the way down + pain of love + dirty work + fight" listen to them loud maybe in Your car, I choose to listen to them and not the other albums when I drive.
@@zbigniewsas-jaworski699 What I meant was that your comment was welcome BECAUSE it is unpopular. These are great songs, you are absolutely right.
Sounds like a “classic” Keith open-G tuned riff. Once you’ve re-tuned, that little chord suspension just kind of happens.
Sounds great - every rock artist from the 60-today is awesome
As a non-musician, when you are demonstrating what Keith is and could have and did do, it reminds me of the Indonesian folk music clip with Nigel Tufnel
Cannot stand the idea of autotune - soulless - imperfections and rawness is performance. Everything else is musical theatre.
In regards to the digital processing part, what I like to do in my music is sing the lines until they're good to my ear, so I don't have to fix anything in post-production. When I was producing my second record "Reset", I didn't use any pitch correction and tried to get the performance as close to "perfect" as I could. I also experimented a lot with multitracking vocals, so it gives them a different quality. With all that said, to someone who listens to punk/rock music that has fluctuating tempo and sharp/flat notes left and right, it may still sound "over-produced" or whatever, but for my pop/electronic genre I feel like it fits.
Now, the Stones are a different story to me. They have that organic rock sound that needs no Melodyne... Just like The Darkness, in fact. Imagine auto-tuning I Believe In A Thing Called Love 🤣
Last time I saw The Stones was at SARStock in Toronto in 2003. Kinda thought that they should have been done by then, but more power to them if they want to keep going.
Brilliant stuff Justin Sir - your noodling or dichotomy makes this music sound way more interesting than the sounds from your speakers 😁👍
I love this song... it gets better and better the more you listen 🎶 ❤
But what happened to them?
I love the new album there isn't a bad track on it
It’s a great tune . Along with Bite my head off , Whole wide world etc… 🎉
THanks for the video. The Song is brillant. Una maravilla
That J45 style guitar sounds AWESOME!!
Your tag line to this video was my exact reaction to your second album.
I love your show. Your always so insightful n funny. And feel like I had a mini guitar lesson. Brilliant!!!!
?
The e-mail alert gets me everytime
I think pitch correction can be a handy tool in production, personally I use it when I record vocals because I am not a confident singer and usually end up quite pitchy. Recording a vocal take, “tuning” it, then recording the next take singing along to the tuned one helps me stay a lot more in tune and make a result much more pleasing to my ears. The tuned vocals never reach the final track (because usually they sound awful and weird) but they help me in making the final vocals sound a lot better, and help with my pitchy singing. I’m sure I’ll reach a point where I don’t need that first step any more as my singing improves, but for now it’s an invaluable tool for me :)
So you're not a singer. You like to sing, which is great, but you are untrained most likely...very few are tone deaf. Sounds more to me that you are happy to sing incorrectly, as long as you can fix it up with software. That is getting you further away from building an ability, cuz you wont throw off your crutch. Working with a Vocal Coach/Voice Teacher will gain you much more as a musician. At a certain point, one may as well have AI take over the tough stuff.
totally agree - just train don't use jiggery pokery
They're more of a singer than you are a reader@@kilgoretrout3966
That dressing gown is super gorgeous; I think Justin has worn it at the end of every Permission to Land show recently. The last performance at The Roundhouse was my highlight of the year 🙏
Love the Stones 4 ever n ever!!
Love it and enjoyed the breakdown. Thank you.
For my money, the best two tracks on the album that the band hasn't released as singles are "So Close" and "Whole Wide World" for those who are interested. Great songs.
When Justin went "Ange frengedabedabebemmm" - I felt that.
I googled the leery inquisitive head and learned a new thing. Thanks Justin 😂
I’m too scared to Google it… think I’m going to leave it to my equally scary imagination and live in blissful ignorance this time 😅😂😂
@@NinStardust ignorance is indeed bliss...but I've googled worse things. 😆
My favorite takeaway is that I feel the need for a t-shirt that says Disco Jam Flavored😂
On the subject of correcting vocals; way back in the day Janet Kays vocal on Silly Games was about to be rerecorded as it was flat. The record company went ahead and released it with the original vocal and i'm glad they did. The "flawed" vocal was wonderful and the song was a hit.
You need to do a special live show recorded from MORC! Cannot wait to see you on a rando lido deck there!
Real vocals Real music but yah know we are where we are
I think the song is cool, and i agree with your comment on the fact that they are trying to make stuff adjusted to the new digital times of today, maybe looking for new generations who mostly are used to artificial things in their lifes.
The autotune is a tool which is used in a lot of ways and, in my opinion, it doesn't always mean that the singer doesn't know to sing. It is used to create effects on the voice. In the past people added low or high vocals and now it has been changed by the auto tune...
I like much more the natural voice, of course, but Mick Jagger knows singing, he sings better than a lot of young singers of today who could't sing without the autotune...that is the difference!
Edit to add: I glad to see David in his natural place again!
He usually plays in open G mate, and takes off the high E string too, but if you keep it on you can keep it E.
So their tuning is usually DGDGBE
Getting old correctly and an inspiration to us oldies. No face lifts, just still rocking for the love of it as they certainly don't need the money!! Rock on guys.
The Stones have been in my Rock Trinity for over 40 years. "Exile..." is my favorite of their albums. That being said, the Stones have been their own cover band since the mid-80's, probably. Although I don't hate the new album, they've already done it several times. It's just produced like a modern record, (which isn't necessarily a good idea).
I'm still listening to keefs expensive winos stuff.. outstanding
If they want to keep playing and fans want to pay to see them why not? I wouldn't pay good $$ to see 80 year olds rocking out but to each his own.
exactly
Thought you catch the Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? Progression. It’s also similar to the bass walk down on Miss You also, at least to my ear, faster, but similar.
There is auto-tune or melodyne on Robert Plant's voice on their most recent live album Celebration Day. And it sounds like you can still hear Plant's clean vocal echoing through the hall and it sounds like it phases in a weird way against the Auto-Tune. I would have just fixed it where it absolutely needed it and leave the rest.
Good ONE! Brilliant!
I’m hearing Sultans of Swing every time you play those 3 chords.
Excellent commentary. Insightful. Like being in an academic class.
Hello. I had me a little chuckle when I heard 'Bite My Head Off'. 4th track in on t'album. It sounded like The Rolling Stones were parodying The New York Dolls mimicking The Rolling Stones.
Happy Day.
Still one of the best live bands (present company accepted). Even acceptable when Keef messes up, part of the live experience for me. In todays's World I'd expect all the recording nanny buttons to be pushed.
Got tickets for your Malta gig. Can't wait.
that little figure also figures prevalent in the verse on "Almost Hear You Sigh" off of Steel Wheels. Of course, it's indicative of the sort open G staple that has come to characterize many Stones progressions post Ry Cooder showing Keef the open G tuning in 1969 (or so?).
Should be mentioned, this is one of the two tracks on the album on which Charlie Watts appears.
You could say any band is "passed it", it just comes down to whether you like the band or not. I love the Rolling Stones and like them more since the 'Angry' video.
Justin,
Were you aware that there is a Japanese quartet by the named "Oh No Darkness!!" out of Osaka, I believe. Their bass player has this high pitched Kawaii voice with a bit of Macy Gray growl to it. They may have dissolved, but they have an ethereal sound to them.
They sound super tight and updated sonically
¡Gracias!
Thanks!
That little riff you kept playing is Sultans of Swing surely?
Oh I completely agree. Too much stuff today sounds clinical. It's those amazing deviations that gave real life to the songs, whether musically or vocally.
A music industry veteran I follow on social media, says all of it happened in the old days too. It was just very laborious and painstaking. They used to chop up tape, copy it, paste it, therefore stretching it. They could always speed up or slow down tape playback, changing the pitch. It's just that everybody has easy access to it these days, on their phones!
Malarkey. Pitch changing with slower or faster tape speed is nothing akin to digital pitch correction.
@@mattroberts86they would always punch in a part that needed to be fixed….. no pitch shifting or moving the vocals around….
@Bernz66 yeah punch in to re-record a bad part, not manipulating it with the machine to make bad notes acceptable! Auto tuned stuff sounds kinda like flange to me.... always reminds me of the Cher battleship song. "Do you believe in love " I believe the song was ..... overdone vocal digitizing as an effect on that song eventually used widely for digital cheating lol
We are lucky they are still here it can't last forever but they have had more staying power than any band I can think of.
Hollies
YOU ROCK!
Really like this song!
I saw them in Arizona on their last tour and it was amazing
In the live performance of the song 'Mess It Up', Jagger sings it just like he did in the original recording, if he needs help, like you said, it would be so minuscule as not to be noticed.
When was it done live?
Do the Liam Gallagher /Squires Stone Roses Rainbow thing please.
Would love to hear your thoughts on it
I prefer a natural voice with emotion and all it's imperfections.
Yes, I picked up on that “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” feel as well! I hope they’ll make a nice long version like they did with Miss You.
Anyone know the brand of guitar Justin is playing?
Love the new Stones album you’re right by saying they want it to sound like old stuff!
It depends Justin, if i cant hit a note then i dont mind notes being a bit flat, if i can hit it then i mind very much 😅
My faves from H Diamonds are Driving me too Hard and Depending on you both give you THAT Stones goosebumps feeling circa Tattoo you
Justin! Did you tidy-up your studio after reviewing this song? Did the song title inspire you?😅
About your question at 13:22, I must admit I've googled it😂🙏
Nice one!😉
...✌️😎
Wouldn't pay to watch the Stones live, but it is great that they are still performing and recording in the 21st century.
Mi canción favorita del álbum 🔥
Wings of Pegasus have proved that current remixes of old stars like Simon and Garfunkel and even Freddie Mercury are auto-tuned...
I think this is a horrible thing to do.
Despicable!
Bit of Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing and Black or White by Michael Jackson in the guitar at different points, along with that Rod Stewart bassline "homage".
I love that bands we grew up with are still touring. I believe as long as they are able to play and are having fun. I enjoy getting to see bands that I never had the opportunity to see when I was younger. Auto tune is iffy. I don't like when production messes with a singer's voice. I like when a singer sounds like their recording or even better live. I know so people use some auto tune when performing but I want to hear the singer faults and all.
The Stones pulled a rabbit out their azz with this latest effort no doubt..a solid, complete piece of work.quite refreshing..
Hello Justin! Juanita from North America here. Have loved the Stones my whole life but this is just sad.
I have seen them in about every decade since 72, I love them, but I kinda wish after Charley's death they would have changed the name to RJW , the Richards, Jagger and Wood Band. Woulda been an ultra classy move.
btw...great ending on the official vid, makes me miss the golden age days of MTV
Motorheart LP is arriving to day. Can't wait to throw it on the turntable.
Awesome album Motorheart is a 9 out of 10 only because there is only 9 tracks and not 10
