My time with Atelier Ryza 2 is done, and now it’s time to drop some less than stellar commentary through the medium of a raspy voice. Hope you enjoy it! (Plot spoilers for the first hour as always).
Playing through it right now myself. Just finished the ruins in the mine. Really enjoyed the first one (my first Atelier) and the second really makes it even better. Great game!
I'm absolutely blown away by how much of an improvement Ryza 2 was over 1. I had some issues with Ryza 1 (particularly the plot), but all my concerns were set aside as soon as I played as little as an hour of Ryza 2.
Really enjoyed the crafting & battle mechanics of the first Ryza & the changes in the second make it feel refreshing. Seasoned gamers may want to play on hard. On normal I never reached tactics levels higher than 3. The battles would be over too quickly.
I played it on the highest difficulty available at the time (there's a 'charismatic' difficulty once you beat the game, so didn't get to play with this), and I had a decent enough challenge. Keeping the characters in line with the enemy curve is key.
I picked up the Atelier Ryza games because I needed something to tide me over until CS4 came out for PC, and I gotta say I agree with you 100% that the second one is an improvement on almost everything. I especially liked that the tactics level and core count went up based upon the skills you used this time, which encouraged the use of skills rather than saving the AP for getting to a higher tactics level like in the first one.
I think what surprised me most is that it trumped one of my favourite games of last year in nearly every aspect. They just took everything that was good about the first and polished it up even more. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the final game in the (supposed) trilogy.
I came in to the Series blind and loved both Ryza's, so I don't know how that will translate for an existing fan. All I can say is that objectively the game is excellent for what that's worth.
With Ryza 3 announced I went back and watched your two videos on both these games like you I haven't played any in the series, but I've been intrigued. The idea of a more wholesome JRPG where you're not dealing with some major epic threat traditionally didn't seem like my cup of tea, so I never really went further into looking into the series but I've started to think it might be a nice change of pace to the usual "grand epic", your comments and excitement on the games got me more interested so I'm thinking maybe I will give these a go. Thanks!

I loved the first Ryza game and been thinking about getting this one too....but my backlog is growing again....sigh lol and persona strikers also releases on Tuesday, my wallet is suffering and it will continue to suffer.
This game was mentioned by youtuber MapleSyrupGaming and I acquired it. I have played Persona and the likes and this game is, in my opinion extremely fun. I wish the dialogue could be skipped easier because after 20 times I know how to mix stuff. Fighting can be quite tedious. Colour and story are amazing.
Think I'll give ryza a go after I've finished p5 strikers, I've been looking for something to scratch the rpg itch since finishing cold steel IV so I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into these games.
It's a very good game, the first Ryza was my first title from the Series. But it's different to many other JRPG's, the crafting system is integral to the experience. So you have to prepare yourself on that front.
Atelier games are underated, the combat systems are the best in the turn-based rpg realm and the crafting systems are the best in the video game world overall.
Hi! Can I suggest you? Can you make the Trails series iceberg? There's Trails theories like "Rean's past", "Osborne is Dreichels", "Rufus as "C" spoiler", "Millium's and Altina's creation", "The Black Records", "Trails references in Tokyo Xanadu and Ys", other Falcom work with Trails with secrets, deleted (or discarded) scenes, "one of the unused ToCS1 songs used for Tokyo Xanadu eX+", "pop culture references in Trails series in english dub", voice actors' secrets, a long etc... I have the ToCS4 OST "Black Truth" for the final level of the iceberg. Greetings!

May be asking for a AAA game for atelier is too much but I hope the next game after ryza 2 will be a open world instead of dividing world into zones. Even switch can hander open world games like botw or the witcher well.
Thanks for the video, I'm in the same situation with Atelier Ryza being my first game and now this one is the second one I've picked up, only put about 10 hours into it so far and I'd heard that it was a bit worse than the first game when it's all said and done but I'm happy to hear you didn't think so. Such a nice chill game to play between saving kingdoms from ruin lol.
Thanks for watching mate! I haven't actually seen any opinions on the game, but it's news to me if people think it's worse than the first game. For me it improved on nearly everything.
I play and finish the first Ryza , was my first Atelier game and my last... The game wasn't bad by all mean but the focus on crafting/synthesis is not for everyone. The battle system was interesting but that was it... Kiseki games put the bar way too high lol ;)
That's fair, Atelier games won't be for everyone. Like you say, the focus is on crafting and that's immediately hit and miss for players. Didn't work for yourself, but definitely worked for me. :)
1 thing that makes this game so much better than the first game is you get item duplicator and gem reduction so much earlier than Ryza 1 and it add so much convenience
The game really does improve and almost every aspect compared to Ryza 1... but it messed up, by that I mean the pacing. It should NOT be possible to make end game items before finishing the 2nd ruin, yet it is. There SHOULDN'T be so many quests and side stories open before finishing the 2nd ruin since its the main story. Crafting, side-stories etc should go hand in hand with the main story, yet it doesn't which makes the main story bosses a breeze to fight through. And this inevitably makes this game weaker than Ryza 1, though it literally improves on every other point... pacing of the game is quite important, isn't it.
I mean you can play it without playing the first, but the returning characters or the references they make aren't going to have much of an impact on you.
Only liked *Atelier Iris 1 and Atelier Iris 2* (PS2) because it had cool male protagonist and especially liked non-human characters like *Gray* in Atelier Iris 2. I will only played that series if they either *remake Atelier Iris 1 or Atelier Iris 2* OR they make a new game that is "less girly/fan-service-y" as all Atelier games that came afterwards.
Meh, Klein are besically your usual shonen anime protagonist that's loved by every girl while Felt feels like a Gary Stu with the whole choosen one thing, I'll pick Viese over both of them as a better protagonist any day (though, I'll agree that Gray's a cool character). I hope the series never returns to those games ever again tbh, there's a good reason why those games are extremely unpopular among the Japanese fanbase & it's better off for Gust to focus on a new project instead of touching their dead games to please a small amount of people that happens to hate most of their recent games. Also, it's funny that you called every game after those 2 fanservice-y when Iris 1 shows 15 years old girl (Lita) in her undergarment while Iris 2 did the same thing with a 13 years old girl (Fee), most of the fanservice in modern Atelier games are optional DLC, nostalgia are one hell of a powerfull drug I'll tell ya.

I was so bored throughout Ryza 2, they need to get rid of the "puzzle" and stick to just the fun stuff. Their whole idea of puzzle is asking the player to put the square block into a square hole etc, I was so done towards the end.
