  • With a gold medal in the women's volleyball final at 2016 Rio Olympics, head coach Lang Ping and her team have taken Chinese volleyball to a new level. The woman known throughout China as the "Iron Hammer" spoke about her feelings in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) on Saturday after guiding the young squad to victory.
"I think during the game, competition you never think what are you going to have or what you get. I think because, especially at the pool games we did not play that well. So we couldn't think that far. So we just said okay, right now it's the quarterfinals, we still have a chance. Let's play real volleyball .Forget about the pressure, forget about the result. Just go ahead and concentrate for the game " said Lang.
China started their campaign to win the volleyball gold medal on a rough patch as they lost pool games against the Netherlands, Serbia and the United States. They finished in fourth place, but it was enough to get them into the quarterfinals, where they faced defending Olympic champions Brazil. It was at this point where the team started to play well.
"And then we did it. It was like a miracle. I couldn't believe that we beat the former champion, Brazil. That game really encouraged us," said Lang.
After gaining some revenge with a semifinal win over the Netherlands, the Chinese moved on to the final to face Serbia once again.
"I think because for both teams, we have 50 percent chance. The result you can't really think. You have to concentrate for the game because all the teams are the best. So it's going to be really, really hard to beat them, especially at the pool game we lost to Serbia like 3:0. So we had to concentrate to play every point. I think we were also very lucky win two points by set. It's very unusual. I think I'm very thrilled," said the coach.
Lang said her team deserves the gold medal as they try their utmost to prepare for the games.
"I think for a coach, I'm more happy for the players because I was a player that won the gold medal. I know, because we've been training so hard. We deserve something back. And then for the players too, I think they work every day, I think they deserve to have a good result. I am so happy for them. ," said Lang.
China climbed to the top of the podium for the third time in the history of volleyball at the Olympic Games and first since Athens 2004.
With the win, Lang Ping has become the first person to win the Olympic volleyball gold medal as a player and a coach.

Lang Ping was the "iron hammer" as the star spiker for Chinese team in the 1980s when China won five world champs in a roll. Now she has won both world cup and Olympic as coach with mostly manageable players except for the super Zhu Ting who is now the dual MVP of both world cup and Olympic. Lang Ping is the only woman coach in all world top teams but you can see that she is the coolest coach on the sideline during the game with little emotion shown. Her timeout is full of specific instructions and tips, unlike many other coaches who often fill the timeout with "Come on, let's fight" and the alikes.
She has been our national idol to many of us for a long time, Now her place in history is where few can reach.
There is a strong possiblity that Lang Ping will continue to coach through 2020 Tokyo Olympic with this young team she built from scratch. She is only 56 this year, but her body has sufferred too many injuries in her early years and she is a very devoted coach will takes a lot for her to coach.

I think she grew up in US. She lived there for like half of her age.
