- A couple of months ago whilst performing in the Royal Mail in Thorngumbald Terry Fee passed a poem to us and hummed a tune. This is the result - a song about Lil Bilocca the leader of Hull's Headscarf Revolutionaries in 1968 who fought for safer working conditions for all fishermen.
Woohoo nice
I've been asked to post up the song lyrics - happy to oblige!
Queen of Hessle Road
This is the story of Lilly Bilocca
For fisher-men she did a hell of a lot,
and
She fought for safety on all ships
Especially the ones that caught fish to eat with your chips
She bravely led the Hull Headscarf Brigade
To bring fully manned radios to the fishermans aid
The trawlermen they got so annoyed
When all they wanted was to be employed
Lilly, Lilly Billoca
She’s the Queen of Hessle Road
Lilly, Lilly Billoca
She’s the Queen of Hessle Road
Now she looks down from her mural above
Headscarf flapping like the wings of a dove
The ships that she fought for have now all gone
But the legend of Lilly will always live on
Chorus
So,let’s pay homage to the battle she won
She was a wonderful lady when all’s said and done
For the city of Culture let’s make Hull proud
And sing out her praises long and loud
Chorus
Freedom of the City for Lilly and co.
Posthumously awarded and rightly so
Fully deserved after all these years
Family and friends will shed many tears.
Chorus
Queen of Hessle Road
Words written by Terry Fee
Excellent song, well delivered.
Thanks Molly - very kind of you to say so!
Any chance of the lyrics...?
Hi Ian, I've just added the lyrics to the song above!
