Radial Engine Assembly Animation

- This animation shows the assembly sequence of a Radial Engine which are used to power WW1 style aircraft and other recreational light weight aeroplanes.

Wow, I just Googled "how a radial airplane engine works from the inside," and here I am. Awesome and beautiful! Now I know. I used to work in the modeling and animation field, so I know how much time and effort went into this. Amazing job, just subscribed!

A few notes:
- Radial engines were used in WW II too. In fact, many are still used today.
- Radial engines are not used often on lightweight aircraft. They tend to be too heavy and powerful. Most lightweight aircraft use a 4 or 6-cylinder boxer-type engine.

My God. You could animate grass growing in real time and I'd still watch in .25 speed to soak up the details in every frame.

That's a radial engine. For rotary engine, do a search for "Wankel engine."

Great work, Dan! You've invested a boat load of time in the model - you should use that to your advantage and animate/render some section cuts that describe the piston, rod, cylinder relationship etc. It would also be amazing to play with in VR. Let me know if you want to collaborate.

Found this through Reddit, love it,. there's something highly satisfying about seeing something complex come together from simple components. Like Lego level 100. This must have taken you ages to model and animate but I could watch this sort of stuff all day and I hope you make another!

This is a Rotec radial engine (not to be confused with a rotary engine). This is not a reproduction of an old engine, but a new clean-sheet design that is used in a wide variety of both modern and vintage-looking light aircraft. www.rotecaerosport.com/

In ww1 most "radial" engines were rotary engines, which is a lot different than this.
Looks to be a Rotec radial. Maybe its already broken! :D
Yes Christian you are right, most WW1 aircraft were powered by rotary, but indeed this is one of them and they are currently used predominately in WW1 style aircraft by home-builders and aviation enthusiasts that build WW1 replicas. I like your last statement and can't say you are wrong ;) Some people have described them as a death trap haha! But I know there are many types of lightweight aircraft successfully flying today powered by these Rotec Radials. From my position I am just interested in the design and I am please with my animation of this engine :) I hope you enjoyed the video!

It turns out that Harley motorcycles only use two cylinders. OHV(Over Head Valve) engines limit higher performance.

Ok great, I do not show the fuel delivery, but it at 46s you can see the intake manifold and carburetor coupling. Check the Rotec website for more info - www.rotecaerosport.com

Thank you :) Yes there are preassembled bronze bushes pressed into both ends of the rods, including a bronze bearing on the crank end of the master rod that mates with the crank

Hi sir I want to ask, If I want to animate movement which has constraint link one part and another does we have to animate it one by one?
I make 3d model in inventor, When I render in keyshot, I rotate the crankchaft but the connecting rod doesnt move, do I have to animate each part?I cant figure how to make it happen,because it has a rotational and translational movement in a same time
Hi Ian, you will likely need to do this for the Master Rod and only one of the link rods. The animation steps you add will then be able to be copied and applied to the other link rods as they will be identical parts.
You are correct, you will need to do a rotational and transnational animation steps simultaneously. Be sure to orient them about the parts coordinates and not the render scene, this way you will be able to copy and apply linked animation steps to the other link rods/piston assemblies

how long does it take to render this scene?
It is hard to say as I re-rendered snippets and developed this animation over 18 months. I think the rendering this scene in one go would've taken me a few weeks (on my old CAD Laptop). On my current CAD Machine it would take approx 3-6days.
