    *At 2:52, the Graphics Card is the ATI Rage IIC, not Range.
    In 1997, Apple was 90 days from going bankrupt. But after Apple's purchase of NeXT Software, Steve Jobs returned to the company he co-founded. A year later Apple introduced the iMac, the machine that undeniably helped to save the company from extinction.

    When I was in 3rd grade back in 1998 I transferred to another school and that school was still using the Apple II. (My previous school was using performas) The following fall they updated all the computers to the G3 iMac and I remember my nine year old self being obsessed with the computer. It definitely was an unique computer for its time.

    When I was very young in the early 2000s, my younger brother actually had an iMac G3 as his first computer. I'm sure my dad picked it up secondhand, and we had plenty of software for it. I don't even remember the computer I was using at the time, definitely something Windows-based, but I'll always remember that iMac because as a kid it was something completely different from what I was used to. I just remember thinking it seemed so inviting to me back then. As a kid, you really couldn't ever forget a computer that looked like that. I was born in 1997 and my brother was born in 2001. He must've been only 4 or 5 years old at the time. I don't even know what ended up happening to it. I believe it was the bondi blue model with the CD tray.

    The Blueberry iMac was my first iMac, prior to that I’d used the 7600/132. I still boot my iMac from time to time just to mess around and remember how awesome Apple was before it became a cell phone company. Miss SJ a lot.

    Back in the day, this machine (the Bondi Blue one) was my first "personal" computer ever. Was that machine that I learned how to use a computer and was my first contact with the English language, though. Seeing those pictures again gave me so much nostalgia (I paused the video many many times just to see its details again lol). However, I was in shock when Michael said that this machine could run Mac OS X! When I was a child at that time, I dreamed about running OS X on this (lol), as my father has a Mac Pro running OS X Panther, but, I was stuck at 9.2. So many memories! Thanks a lot for the video!

    3:34 The controversial thing was, the iMac got rid of removable _writable_ storage--the CD drive was read-only. If you wanted to attach any kind of extra drive, you had to do it via USB.
    Incidentally, the iMac was the machine that really kick-started USB. Prior to that, it suffered from the chicken-and-egg problem: customers were reluctant to buy machines with USB capability, because so few devices were available, and device manufacturers were reluctant to add USB interfaces, because so few PCs could connect to them.
    The iMac changed all that. Others tried to put the credit on Microsoft Windows 98, but you could tell that wasn’t the major factor. How could you tell? Because so many USB devices came out, not in beige, but in translucent colours, so they wouldn’t look too out of place sitting next to an iMac. The fact that they now looked out of place sitting next to a Windows machine ... well, that was another story.

      Heath Mitchell How do you figure? They certainly were for a time in the mid to late 2000’s, but recent models like the iMac 5k, iMac Pro, and Mac Pro have been very competitive from a value perspective. When the iMac 5K was released, it put similar spec and performance PCs with 5k displays to absolute shame, and I suspect the newest variants still do. 😑

    • @dregenius

      @@yeti4269 That's true, but it's hard to deny that Apple really does push the industry forward.. there are plenty of reasons why they can do this, but the biggest one is because they aren't as concerned about "losing market share" in a saturated segment like PC brands are. If Apple didn't push USB-C, I pretty much guarantee we'd still have brand new high end PCs without it. (I just bought a new $350 Asus motherboard and it has *one* USB-C and zero Thunderbolt!) Apple is ok with temporarily "pissing off" some stalwarts that lament when anything changes, but they really do seem to be constantly the driving force behind widespread adoption of all manner of features and creature comforts, so I give them credit for that!

      I've had a Rev. B Bondi Blue for several years now, manufactured in November 1998 if I recall correctly. Still works great on the original install of Mac OS 8.5 and sits above my main iMac 5K. Also have a few of the later models including a Late '99 Blueberry iMac DV running Mac OS X Panther with an attached iSub, a rare accessory meant to compliment the slot-loading G3 iMac's internal speakers. Even today it's a good setup for music playback, provided you ignore the loud whine coming from the iMac's original hard drive.

      petevineaux Yes they are usable somewhat. Getting them on the internet is a challenge but that's the fun. Screens are not great compared to today's standards but still pretty good.

    • @TimurTripp2
      @TimurTripp2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @petevineaux Fine for most mid-late 1990's / early 2000's Mac games and apps, though by the mid 2000's some of them were requiring a G4. Screen is a Shadowmask CRT with a max res of 1024x768, not a good resolution by today's standards (and fairly average in its time), but the color reproduction isn't bad (Trinitron CRTs were a little bit better and early flat panels were a little bit worse, both were too expensive to put into the iMac until the 2002 iMac G4 was released with a flat panel).

    At least removal of the floppy drive made sense because Cd-ROM and later DVD-Rom based media did offer a lot more options and flexibility plus way more storage than 3.5 inch floppies. Removing the 3.5mm headphone jack on their new phones makes no sense in any sort of way because there is nothing better that wireless or Apple's proprietary Lightning connector provides compared to a 3.5mm connector which is tried and true.

    I had a Summer 2000 iMac 350 (cheapest model) in Bondi Blue. It was my first new home computer. It cost £650 in the UK, which at the time I thought was reasonable.
    I'd had experience of the hockey puck mice in my job where I used a blue and white G3 tower, those mice truly were terrible, very uncomfortable to use for any extended period (like in a job!). So I was glad that the Summer 2000 iMacs had the new pro mouse which was so much better. It had the full size keyboard as well which was an improvement over the previous keyboard.
    The only real issue with mine was the lack of fast ports in the 350 Mhz model, it only had USB 1, no FireWire, so was very limiting. I bought an external CD writer which was soooooo slow it was painful. More expensive models had FireWire.
    That gripe aside, it was a good computer that lasted me 3 years or so, I then passed it on to my Mother in Law who used it for another couple of years.

      AKA 'The Gates Satan' :) Paying Apple to install and promote the Mac version of IE was another brilliant move on Bill''s part. 'Thought I stuck it to ya before Stevie? THINK AGAIN!!' Of course, the last thing anyone needed was IE on anything, but those were the early days of the Net. MS has always found a way to worm it's way into other companies, products and architectures so that they manage to maintain some sort of vendor and standards lock-in. I pray they never get that far with Linux. Although, they're trying.

    • @maxmustermann1455

      Linux is quite "bulletproof" though. Even if they weasel their way into most main stream distros. Microsoft(R) Ubuntu(TM) with non-optional cortana integration.....
      Just use something else. It could even be a good thing. If at least some of the stuff they do is under GPL and other non-affected Distros can use stuff they helped developed.
      You gotta give it to MS, Windows 10 is super stable and got some nice features. Too bad they ruin it with their policies and mandatory updates.

      @lawrencedoliveiro9104 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@raydeen2k Remember, they started out by calling Linux a “cancer”. So they’ve been trying to kill it for about 20 years, without success.

    I'm still rocking a Grape tray loader. Running 9.2, Classilla and an old version of Python (2.3) for playing around with. Considering I got mine free from a local company that was tossing it's old equipment around 10 years ago or so, it's given me more than enough enjoyment. Maybe someday I'll upgrade the RAM, HD and replace the PRAM battery and attempt an OS X upgrade. I believe I have to flash the firmware first or risk bricking it as the original firmware can't handle OS X, at least not on the tray loaders. Slot loading machines should be fine from what I've heard.
