Canceling my Sirius XM subscription i had 2 years ago was like pulling teeth. You can sign up online but you have to call to cancel your subscription. On top of that i still get harassed with emails and letters in the mail.

I hope the FTC adds in a rule about auto renewing. Sometimes, there's times where I didn't want to auto renew, and I know I disable auto renew. But I got auto renew automatically. And I had to fight with my bank that I didn't do this renew, nor enable auto renew.
I use virtual cards for all subscriptions/trials and delete the card before even attempting to formally cancel the subscription/trial. And more the a few times the spending limit I set on the virtual card saved me from paying more than I had originally agreed to.
Please make sure you know what you're doing as the virtual card will be connected to your actual bank account somehow and there could be a way for the company to trace you and direct-debit your actual account or mess up your credit report.
My gym let me cancel after I showed them I was moving out of state, guess they didn't have those gyms in the state I was moving too, but it still wouldn't kick in for two weeks, so I had to pay for that last two weeks anyway. As for streaming services, I don't think it's ever unclear when you sign up for Amazon Prime. However, i signed up for AMC once to watch a show I was interested in. After when it was time to cancel I had to email them in order to do so, there was nowhere on the site that would let you cancel with just one click. Now that was unacceptable.
You can sign up for the gym online, pay all your bills online, never visit the actual gym once, and still need to go in person to cancel your membership.
They make it as easy as go in person to cancel? I thought you had to send it in triplicate through registered mail, written in red ink on A4 sized sheets and arranged to arrive on Wednesdays?
That doesn’t always work though. Your personal info is still tied to the services and you’ll start accruing a negative balance that could be reported to a debt collector. Which then hits your credit.
Uh oh my gyms not going to like this “You can’t cancel online” “Sorry the guy who cancels memberships isn’t in today” “Sorry he’s not here the second day”
This is great, but honestly it needs to go further. Everything is a subscription now, there should be specific regulations on what products can bills as a subscription.
Agreed - I'm stuck paying for a first year's subscription to a premier service that I didn't even actually need and never personally use (long story) because I don't make enough to pay off the remaining balance in one fell swoop. I don't reckon that I'll be able to benefit from the new FTC regulations in this case, either, because I'm pretty sure that it'll be paid off before they kick in.
It got to a point where I ended up cancelling a card and getting a new one from my bank, it’s so much easier to do that than canceling various subscriptions. I never really have an issue with Amazon but others I do have and they take forever and or require a phone call to cancel. The one San Francisco newspaper (SF Chronicle), when I wanted to cancel subscription they wanted me to call and then they wanted to offer me deals to stay with them and after like 24 (not kidding either) offers at various rates and times, I finally let it all out on them and they finally removed my subscription. It so tedious and takes a while.
You forget to pay for a month of dashpass? That’s okay. We’ll just charge you for it everyday until the payment goes through, and the cancel subscription button is now gone.
There needs to be a law. If you are trying out service and you are in the free trial. A username and email should be enough to get free service. If you want to go past the free trial then you have to use your credit to start the paid subscription. Also you should be able to login your account when you are ready to cancel and click cancel. No need to be on the phone waiting 15 minutes just to get through to a real person to cancel.
Oftentimes, I just request a new CC under lost/stolen. New number. Then they can't charge you anymore. Yes, I realize then I'd have to update other subscription services.
Can't they just make the sign up processes difficult and then make cancellation equally as difficult? FTC says "it has to be as easy to cancel as it was to sign up" interesting loop hole there
It took three months and certified mail to California before I was able to cancel one gym membership. It's criminal!!! I also moved from one cell phone company to another had the port out pen and everything and then they said oh you never canceled your account. They kept trying to bill me for months afterwards, even after I no longer had their service.
The FCC should look at the Australian Consumer Law and ACCC for examples. As an Australian who subscribes to a few American based services it's crazy how hard it is to cancel or unsubscribe from things. If it's more than 3 steps to cancel then it should be illegal. You should also automatically stop billing after 12 months unless you resubscribe to prevent ongoing billing for things you don't want or use.
After I cancelled my membership cause I moved out of state with work Planet fitness still kept charging my debit card even after they agreed to stop it. When I confronted them about it the operator acted surprised, but still kept charging my card afterwards. That type behavior should be beyond illegal, but they keep getting away with it over and over again.
I'm not going to lie, it's one of the reasons why I actually go besides wanting to exercise. I knew what I was signing up for and that it was going to be a pain to cancel it, so I go often enough to where I'm in "decent" (obvious musculature, but also never bothered to diet much because I go into crash mode, so a bit of paunch, 5/10 body) shape.
I used to work at PF. Most gyms are actually like that tho. My managers told me it's because making you come in to cancel makes it more difficult to cancel. If you're not likely to get up and go to the gym, you're not likely to get up and go to the gym to cancel 💯 You have to send a written letter in or cancel in person. It's dumb but smart from a business standpoint.
Yeah. I’ve had issues with trying to even take my card information off those accounts when they don’t make it easy to cancel. This is why i use a paypal card. It helps me to block and dispute any charges to my bank account that i’ve tried to not let go through when they made it difficult to cancel the service.
Gyms, cable tv, satellite radio subscriptions are notoriously difficult to cancel. I had to wait on hold for 3 different people to cancel my cable and it took over an hour, with each person going through the same list of nonsense. "Can you run a speed test and show me your internet speed? I think you should keep this because ours is faster." etc. It's the same trying to cancel satellite radio. "You don't listen to music? What kind of radio do you use?" over and over and they almost refuse to cancel. I don't get the Amazon Prime problem. it seems very clear to sign up and easy to cancel using a few clicks.
I can’t believe FTC finally grew a spine. This should have been the LAW since day one. The only reason why spineless FTC finally decided to do this is because they were getting averages of 40 calls per day regarding this issue and they no longer have the staff to keep picking up these calls .
People complain too much. That’s how sales work! It’s not like they don’t allow you to cancel. People just complain when something happens in their life and they can’t pay it and need money. So they blame whatever is easiest
