    My grandmother never staked her tomatoes; they did great. Heres a tip, the fruits don't need direct sun. They will scald. However, the leaves need the sun for photosynthesis to ripen the fruit. So, let the fruit be shaded. I admit to staking my tomatoes on 7' T posts. Leave them in the ground for 2 seaso ns. Then, rotate to a new space, so disease doesn't take hold. Btw, your garden looks great! ❤

    Giving your garden produce to the chickens is a good thing. It's definitely not a waste. Home canned collard greens and kale with kielbasa chunks is a really good, hot side dish for winter. Loaded with vitamins.
    If you plan to prep food on a butcher block countertop, be sure to clean it with salt when finished. Get it wet, sprinkle on the salt, give it a brush scrub to clean out the grooves. After 10 minutes, wipe up the excess salt water. Germs all gone! Oil it as needed.

    Kyle . . . improve the soil in your raised beds: When you clean out the chicken coop, put that on the garden beds. The same with leaves dropped from the trees. Compost tremendously improves the soil,
    as does wood ash and charcoal. With the richer soil, your vegetables next year will flourish.

    • @MichelleOhio
      @MichelleOhio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Can fresh chicken poop burn plants? Might check that out before just tossing it on.

    • @BorealSelfReliance
      @BorealSelfReliance 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MichelleOhio I think your right, IIRC my chicken friends dumped the chicken coop manure in its own piles to sit for a few months(?) prior to putting into the soil. Maybe after the final harvest you could amend the soil before the snow and it would be dilute by the time it gets to planting time in spring.

    • @nancybakerhorvath8103
      @nancybakerhorvath8103 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Kyle, whenlettucebegins to go to seed as your lettuce has it is time to cull!
      Plant lettuce seed every two weeks to always have fresh lettuce to eat!
      Also plant string bean seeds every two weeks to continue to have a fresh supply.
      Generally one can count on three to four green pickings per bush before needing to cull.
      Brussel sprouts should be picked After the first fall frost! The flavour of brussel sprouts is enhanced by low night temps! Believe me!
      You should build a permanent trellis for your tomato, cukes sugar snap peas etc. You have the free wood and skill set. Just purchase heavy duty wire fencing!
      Good job on all your produce!

      If you add peat moss to the chicken droppings, the droppings immediately become useable as fertilizer. Peat moss cools the " hot " chicken droppings.

    • @gibwest4968

      @@MichelleOhio you are correct. Droppings are hot but if mixed with peat moss, it immediately cools down and is usable

    Beautiful garden, Kyle. Next year don't spend money on trellises - just use straight branches and tie the tomato plants to them, or chicken wire the length of the garden box and tie them up. cheap and easy. Lettuce grows well in window box style boxes on your deck. Since you're so handy you can build a planter box all around your deck for veggies. Thanks for sharing.

    If haven't yet bought your garden seeds, you might have better success with a company located in the north. I'm in Wisconsin and have a good result with Gurney in Yankton SD. Their varieties are developed for a similar climate to yours. As you wish to be organic, fish emulsion is an excellent fertilizer. A gallon jug will probably last more than a single season. Squash is also a great veg that will last through the winter if well protected from freezing. If leaving your house for more than a few days, they will probably be ok if put into coolers set above the floor level. I've had some last 6 months. Only save those without any blemishes. I also recommend some research on perennial vegetable varieties, including herbs. I'm still growing Egyptian multipliers as the 4th generation of my family using the top bulbs handed down through the family. These are not onions like globe onions, but planted in the fall and harvested in the spring and early summer as scallions. Just leave several parent plants alone to continue providing new offspring the next year. Most perennial veg does require a good mulch to prevent heaving in the soil thus protecting the plants below the soil. Plant garlic in the fall, saving some of your harvest to replant. I would also plant asparagus and berries in your climate. Have you been thinking of a hoop house? With your skills it would be a snap and extend your growing season by as much a two months on both ends. If you plan on canning, do you have experience or someone to rely upon? It's far more complicated than you might think. Absolutely do not listen to "cowboy canners". Their ignorance is shocking. Just because a jar seals doesn't mean it's safe. Botulism will live on until it meets thermal death above 245f. Boiling water never reaches anything beyond 212f. Learn which fruit and veg is low or high acid foods. Tomatoes and apples are high acid and can be preserved in a boiling water bath kettle but green beans or meats must be pressure canned. Get some ph testing strips to make sure you have proper acidity. If too low, adding BOTTLED lemon juice can insure safety. Your best online source for safe canning is not youtube. Check out the center for home food preservation at the University of Georgia.

    Great trim work and butcher block build.
    "hah-la-payn-yos"
    Was gonna say your pails and garden needed watering then you made it rain.
    Yeah, some soluble fertilizer for your pails. Please build out those compost piles now to add layers of leafy "greens" alternate with dead "browns" (leaves). Utilize pulled weeds(!), throw in chicken manure in between. No branches, twigs, dry stems or weeds with seed heads. Keep moist, turn over weekly with hay fork. Never add fresh manure to growing plants, compost first till matured, or work into beds in Fall AFTER crops spent and removed.
    You can sauté lettuce and kale, etc., or all that is great in Chinese wok cooking. Your lettuce has "bolted", you'll find milky sap in stems, with a bitter taste. Time to pull out, chop up and add to compost pile.
    Yeah, your onions need water #1, and next year your finished compost will help for organic matter, and water-holding properties. Some granular 10-10-10 will help very much, dug in.
    Yes, tomatoes should be "staked" and "tied up" and pruned carefully early on.
    Great fence, I didn't see animal damage though looks like some light insect damage, you can buy "insecticidal soap'' in hand spray bottles, cheap, very safe chemically.
    Hi, Cierra!

  • @garyhunter6030
    @garyhunter6030 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I(f you want bigger onion bottoms you have to remove the dirt about 2/3 down from the top of the bulb. This gives the bulb room to expand. AS it gets bigger remove a little more dirt from around the bulb. You will get onions the size of a softball or bigger.

The tomato’s will for sure need a trellis and will ripen faster and the ground bugs won’t eat at them. The inside and butcher box came out perfect. Your projects always keep you busy but the outcome l am sure make you both happy.

  • @kathleenoverton3263
    @kathleenoverton3263 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can’t remember - do you have a compost pile? If not start one! Mulched leaves, small pieces of old already breaking down wood you pick up from the floor of the woods, , your chicken house bedding/poop, your vegetable and fruit parings. Layer these then they ll mix as you turn it all. Make your compost walls out of old pallets. Turn it often to aid in breakdown. Add water periodically. I d put a cover on it to keep heavy rainfall from washing parts of it away and you don’t want it to be sopping anyway. The slated pallet sides allow airflow and an open front gives you easy access to turn it and then to transfer it to a wheelbarrow and into your garden when it’s ready. Most often people have 2. Built side by side. Half way through the season of collecting this for the garden you can start using the other bin so that you re not adding newer stuff to the first bin that won’t have time to fully break down. You may already know this but I ve been composting 25 years now fit myself gardens and don’t ever but buy of compost or any kind of soil to grow my food in. I also started a few hugelkulture rows in my gardens this year for my chard spinach and kale rows just to check it out. Oftentimes soil from the earth is perfect for the natural plants growing in it but not for plants that would find that soil foreign. But if you start a compost pile now you will have enough by next season to add it. Also you can buy bags of organic compost. Adding that now after you empty your garden - with a layer of mulched leaves left sitting through the snows and then digging it under 5-6 inches will make a huge difference. All that waste from your garden - spent tomatoes, bean plants, etc are a great addition to the compost or just piled up and mulched with your mower. Rake it up and add it to your garden. Also use a lot of make in smoothies with fruit to sweeten. Yum!!

    When I was working on my greenhouse my boss grandma taught me when you add sweetness to a soil which is compost it can be too sweet so you have to add a line which is line or greenwood Ash take green cuttings off on trees burn them to down to an ash and that will be as a lime for your soil it's an old way of dealing with it cuz when you're compost is in your garden and it's too sweet it can burn the crops and burn the roots but add compost wood ash to your garden each year in the pH level and all that should be fine the only other suggestion I would make is when you add compost add some good sand I don't know how sandy soil is but your soil is tight that's why the onions are not getting that big my family's nothing but hillbillies from Michigan Michigan potato farmers we always added sand to our soil so the potatoes could get bigger easier to grow in the ground
