MAY 2017 - My wife, baby son, and I stayed at this apartment in Tokyo for 1 week in May 2017. This was a great condo, located not far from the central Shinjuku area of Tokyo. One of the things I love most about living or visiting Japan is that the living spaces are so cosy and so comfortable. Even though you usually don’t have a lot of extra space or moving room, there’s everything you need in a Tokyo apartment in such a small space.
In this apartment in Tokyo, there was 1 bedroom, 1 living space with a small balcony attached, a small kitchen with a bar counter dining space, and finally a bathroom equipped with a life-changing Japanese Toto toilet and something completely new for me - a Japanese sitting shower.
Hope you enjoyed this Japan apartment tour in Tokyo. This is a little glimpse into the possibilities of living or staying in Japan and an apartment you can rent when you visit. I rented just for 1 week, so it was short term, for $60 per night. But renting an apartment like this per month should be much more affordable.

That tiny sink above the water tank is a way for us Asians helped in water conservation. The idea is, after you did your thing in the toilet, wash your hands in that tiny sink and the 'used" water goes into the tank to be use for flashing the next time you use the toilet again.

This apartment is much larger than a tiny one I just saw set in Hong Kong. It was perhaps just a little larger than this man's bedroom. I lived in a motorhome for an extended period of time, so living in an apartment like this man's would be perfectly okay with me. I believe my whole family could live there comfortably.

Loved renting in Shinjuku, also through Airbnb but we rented a 3 bedroom for ten days and just loved the location. Just a 10 minute walk to the train station too which was so convenient. Shinjuku was great fun with so many side streets with intimate karaoke bars and food street vendors. The Shinjuku Gyoen Park was hands down the most stunningly beautiful park we ever seen. It is without hesitation, a must see while you are in Shinjuku. The Tsukiji Fish Market was a blast to visit and a short train ride from Shinjuku.I could go back again in a heartbeat.

How Japanese take a bath: you first wash yourself sitting on the stool in front of the mirror and using the shower. If you are completely clean, you go into the bathtub to relax. After you finished relaxing, you cover the hot water in the tub with a sheet or kind of plastic blanket to keep it warm, because the next person will use the same water to relax. That is why you have to be clean before you enter the bath tub. I was in Japan for a traineeship and stayed three months with a Japanese family, that is where I learned how to use the bathroom.

1800$/month is VERY expensive, even compared to downtown London, where you could rent a 1/2 bed room modern appartment for 1200-1500 pound/month. On the contrary you can rent a 2-bedroom modern appartment in downtown Shanghai for 600 - 800$ / month. One can only say it's cheap compared to living in a hotel in Tokyo, for a short time ( like weeks )stay.

This apt seems to be about 30 years old; more modern buildings are much bigger, with even more "hi-tech" stuff built in. The actual size of a unit can be as small as one room only and as big as 3 bedrooms, living room, etc. Still, at $60/night in the middle of Tokyo seems a good value for a family-oriented visit with a baby. This is not a "standard" by any means for a family of three or more:) for Tokyo "residents" in the upper/middle class segment. Fun video, though.

Laura, which hostel did you stay in Tokyo? I will be travelling alone and staying in a hostel would be more economical for me than renting an apt. for myself. Would you recommend it?

My sister is thinking going back there on her honeymoon & taking our mom there with them...And I totally forgotten about these options! Thanks! I really enjoyed it! The high tech bath ...we've been having it since the 80's ! Lol.I'm glad that you & your family had a great time in Japan! Your baby has such a cute voice!

The sink above the flash tank for washing your hand after using the toilet, so the dirty water can reuse for flash. I love the idea how they recycle water. Even you can reuse Tub water to wash your clothes.
