    I assumed the point of the Osteen quote was how tone deaf it proved. It sounded like the sort of thing he was told to do with his friends -- that they were dragging him down and he needed to reevaluate the friendships to further his career...when it was really the execs who were trying to drive a wedge between him and his friends so they could isolate and abuse him (a classic abusive partner tactic that I've NEVER experienced firsthand, nosirree...).

      Melon is hyper critical and overly negative a lot of the time imo

    • @8nicopink868
      @8nicopink868 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@cheezburgrproduction I don't think he's hyper critical or overly negative. He gives albums the benefit of the doubt usually, and has given even pop records more positivity than other critics. Honestly I think Rap Critic is more critical than him. Melon has liked some trap without substance that Rap Critic would never like. Not saying this to diss on RC though, I really enjoy and relate to his more critical approach.

    • @Sound_Judgement
      @Sound_Judgement 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Personally, I think they would probably agree on a lot of points if we are talking solely about Hopsin’s potential. Frequently Melon’s critique is not on Hopsin’s skill with rapping or beats (the former he has tended to praise Hopsin for), but his pen game which is where he and Rap Critic would probably but heads. One reason Melon and others (fans or not) have paid so much attention to Hopsin for a long time is that he has seemed like somebody who should be great, but, for those who didn’t become fans, hasn’t lived up to it in hilarious ways. For me, Hopsin is a disappointment but one who is fun keeps tabs on, though No Shame is one of the most unpleasant albums I’ve ever heard.

    Great review!
    I don’t really have a problem with the Joel olstein sample, personally. I mean, people quote people who have done horrible things all the time. Every other yearbook quote is a Lennon quote. Not to bring it too close to home, in hip hop, Elijah Muhammad is quoted A LOT. And I don’t think Elijah Muhammad is a monster, but I don’t necessarily think he was a GOOD person either. I don’t really have a problem with people taking inspiration from him, he was a wise man despite some of his faults. But I can see why someone like Olstein, someone MODERN might be a little close to home. I’d love to hear what anybody else thinks on that!

  • @HonkeyKongLive

    The problem with Hops is that he's full of shit so often that it's hard to really take him seriously when he talks about this kind of shit. He's one of those guys who spends so much time saying everyone else causes all of his problems that when a track like this drops it's hard not to wonder how innocent he actually is in all this.

    Maybe for context on the diss directed towards lupe fiasco: here you got the skate culture colliding with the rap culture, but in the skate community people who pretend to be skaters when in reality they don't know shit about it are, or at least were HATED and people do actually care about calling out posers (at least from my experience). So that's probably where hopsin is coming from considering that skating seems to be a big part of his life

    I know it's a minor thing sand not the main thrust of the critique, but I'd take another look into the skateboarding line about Lupe Fiasco because a significant portion of the skate community loved Lupe because of his skateboarding odes. Now there's a lot of people who will tell you that nobody expects skating rappers to skate well any more than they did the skate punks back in the 90's. However, Hopsin had cred as being actually good at skating per the pros (coming from Tony Hawk no less). The lyricism of that line is... Not great, but the attack was actually pretty heavy, specifically hammering at the parasocial relationship between the artist and a significant portion of his fan base directly.

    Is it just me or is it really hard to focus on what the guy is saying? After a while I just zone out, and for a while now I couldn't figure out what it is - but it's not me, and I have a theory of what the issue here is, let me expand on that. Monsieur rap critic, on the slim chance that you see this, please do something with this as I otherwise really enjoy what you have to say about music.
    So my theory is that he's reading directly from the script, and because of that he doesn't take the pauses that come with natural speech, and so you miss the emphasis that comes with those natural pauses. Todd in the Shadows for instance, talks waaay slower, and with more pauses - and so you listen more attentively. On top of that, when you're reading out loud you often emphasize sentences in a very predictable way, like a beat, which makes the viewer zone out even more

    Rap Critic, please make jokes, for the love of god, be funny again, don’t be so serious

      I miss the RC reviews like the one about Jadakiss - Why, and his Rick Ross skit about counting money. His Peanut Butter Jelly review forced me to audibly laugh

      I just watched the video and I dont even remember any jokes before the very end, just playing a clip, explaining the song, and saying it's good. I dont mind when RC gets serious, but I haven't watched in forever because it feels like 5 minute videos with that formula is all he did for ages. Sad it doesn't seem to have changed much :/

      Yeah gotta say something has sure sucked all the humor right out of him I'm betting it's when he left Channel Awesome and probably wanted to be taken more serious as a music reviewer

    Rap critic. Sits on the sides, making comments. But never dropped a verse worthy.

    Rap critic, you seriously need to take a hard look at McDonald's and realize that any position sub-management is NOT supposed to be a job that sustains an adult as their lifetime career... It's a minimum wage burger flipping job, not a job you keep until you retire.

    • @Ruinwyn

      Fun fact. McDonald's can still have a profitable business while paying their workers living wage. I know this because they do it in Europe. So when they say it isn't possible, they know they are lieing. They can't do it if competitors won't, but legislation demanding higher wages, would not put any of these fast food chains out of business.

    Record labels are employers. They spend a lot of money on their artists that the artist would have to spend otherwise. If you don’t like your boss, quit and find a new one. The owner of your label would be rich either way so you aren’t really paying his bills are you? Artists are some of the most selfish people on the planet.

      Quit and find a new one? Damn one plantation to the next. No artist should join unions and make demands.

      @@mrlofi333 Rapping isn’t skilled labor. There are hundreds of popular rappers now. If they want more money, they will have to EARN it, not just demand it from their bosses.

      @@abiyoyo9831 This is the exact same crap people use to justify screwing over ground level employees nationwide. If your income stream can't exist without a kind of worker, then you have no right to take most of the margin from that worker. Record labels contacts are not like employers, the contract is more stricter preventing easy leave.
      Id be selfish too if my entire lively hood was on the line, emphasis on ENTIRE.
