I love how this is basically "I'm sadder than you," the song. Gotholympians as a name is so on the nose I love it. You're being extra cheeky lately Andrew
This song is from fingerings 1 A great album, you'll find that he re-sings a lot of his songs, probably because he puts a lot of work into his music and can really stand by it
@@lillieeve6969 Basically it's just slamming "goth" and "Olympians" together. like Goth-Olympics, it's just trying to sound more sad than the other person, like it's a challenge. :)
I loved his music since I was a teenager (over a decade ago) and one of the things I always admired about his work is the subtlety and his ability to play with words. I'm afraid his latest material is basically a U-turn with, as you said "cheeky" and on the nose lyrics. Not really my jam, but still, from a musical standpoint, top-notch.
Saw him once around 2006 in small venue in ABQ...near psychedelic experience watching his movement and output, somehow reminded me of a 6 foot cricket meets Jack the Pumpkin King; elegant, sinewy other worldly
What a perfect song to express my miseries since he cancelled his show I was gonna see...for my birthday this year...that was on...my birthday. All the best on Fargo. It’s gonna be a great season!
Totally. I have been waiting for things like that in the new album. Somehow I couldn't grow myself older to love it (I mean not older by time, older by experiences). His new songs are too I don't know...I can't enjoy them except Sisyphus. It is a masterpiece.
Consider the name of the song. "Gotholympians". A portmanteau of "gothic" and "olympians". The former (gothic) is clear, the song has somber tones. But the latter (Olympians) suggests a competition. Then, upon looking at the lyrics in consideration of this element of competition, the voice of the song appears to be competing to be more "gothic", that is, having more grievances than another. So the song therefore paints a picture of what some refer to as the "oppression Olympics", the phenomenon whereby people attempt to argue that they have it worse than others. But this song is too direct in delivering this message to a broad audience, so in a way Andrew's song from his latest record titled "Olympians" can be seen as a more palatable presentation. To quote that song, "Who's giving up the most? No-ones going to give you a medal."
This has been a favorite of mine since the fingerling days. I didn't think it could get any better. Thank you for your music. It has been a well of healing countless times over for me.
My pitiful sorrows have seen more tomorrows than yours My rain really pours At least more than yours At least more than yours In the depths of my sadness there's a beautiful madness you see It's right here on my sleeve You must not believe I can see you just don't believe So I really have to say it's all just so romantic Cause I've seen the others try and they just seem pedantic Cause when it comes to misery When it comes to misery When it comes to misery No one competes with me My sweeping emotions have spanned the great oceans From this fifty foot wave I just can't be saved O don't even try I can't be saved My pitiful sorrows have seen more tomorrows than yours My rain really pours At least more than yours At least more than yours

He does a lot of variations on themes. I really enjoy listening to the evolution of his work.
Not Saved I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed not saved, explain it to me please??

I just spent 15 minutes trying to find this song as I couldn’t remember what it was called and it was absolutely worth it
Such a musically beautiful and lyrically clever song. One of my all time favorites.
Andrew Bird is a weird guy, I guess that's why he's so good

This instrumental is a masterpiece

I love the evolution (and similarities) between this, and the original version in his first Fingerlings album. Great stuff!!
Totally.

There’s this bitter sadness which is just so beautiful through out this song that it frightens me

I like these duets

Loving the feel of this song. And the instruments! So gorgeous
My pitiful sorrows have seen more tomorrows than yours
My rain really pours
At least more than yours
At least more than yours
In the depths of my sadness there's a beautiful madness you see
It's right here on my sleeve
You must not believe
I can see you just don't believe
So I really have to say it's all just so romantic
Cause I've seen the others try and they just seem pedantic
Cause when it comes to misery
When it comes to misery
When it comes to misery
No one competes with me
My sweeping emotions have spanned the great oceans
From this fifty foot wave I just can't be saved
O don't even try
I can't be saved
My pitiful sorrows have seen more tomorrows than yours
My rain really pours
At least more than yours
At least more than yours

How do you always manage to write the words of my soul?
OH MY GOD

Hades and Persephone
Why are there pillz
Why don't you come to bed
Instead of stumbling into the light
Of medicine cabinets?
Shaking out pills left and right...
When I heard that line I was reminded of "now you sling dirty laundry!" From Capsized
Edgar Allen Poe who????
It always reminds me of this Monty Python's sketch:
