I've been reporting this story basically for a decade. LA was a space power that had fallen on tough times. Now it's back with a vengeance and is the clear capital of New Space.
No better guide to explain how this happened than the rocket god Tom Mueller. Hope you enjoy!
LA also has caltech nasa jpl
@@B21_raider yes, but they have seen better days in many, many ways. whole book on it here www.amazon.com/dp/0062998870/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&ref_=tmm_hrd_swatch_0&sr=
Crushed it as usual! I wonder what Made in Space has been up to lately? When I worked for the founders they were working on incredible things.

I absolutely loved watching that, it would be great if Tom got a chance to fly with Jarred Issacman on a Polaris mission
After Tom left SpaceX, I thought he had retired and was no longer in the world of aerospace industry, I didn't know that now he has his own company, it's good to see that someone at this level of experience and expertise still is a part of this industry.
I think it so much a part of him. It’s one of his life purposes. What a life he must have. Am a bit jealous 😅
As a young aerospace engineer in LA, I love seeing the history and the city captured in this awesome documentary
Ashlee Vance is the best at finding people involved in space and finding many ways to talk as little about space as possible.
🤣
It’s a space documentary for those with a passing interest in space, haha. Hence the 5 minute segment on fast cars…
Check out our other bloomberg originals series Giant Leap and Moonshot for lots more space
Never disappointed Ashley Vance always excellent!
I love Bloomberg documentaries - but this one particularly. Thx to the whole team making this information-loaded content piece
Tom is an absolute legend
Thanks to Ashley for covering Tom. Tom's work at TRW paved the way for SpaceX, and his work at SpaceX itself on their Falcon rockets is a major reason for their success.
God I love this series. Good job Bloomberg!
I never heard of Impulse Space until now. Turns out they are within spitting distance from my home in Torrance. So cool to think amazing innovations are taking place in my own backyard!
Wow! Computing and data farms in Space is a really cool, outside the box, idea. Geosynchronous or Lagrange positioning would be most beneficial methinks.
Reaaaaaally wish you hadnt just faded out on Tom explaining the core of his buisness and how the engines are going to function. Or at least make a for nerds version for those that have a shot at understanding
Heard
@@AshleeVanceHelloWorld Can you upload the unedited interviews somewhere? Even behind a paywall
@@AshleeVanceHelloWorld It might be worth checking with Tom Mueller first though
I once watched a marathon 4 hour 15 minute video he gave to students at Launch Canada, where he went into great detail on everything -- including indepth about Merlin reusability. He apparently said too much because all records of that video have been stricken from the internet
@@shazmosushiAre you still in possession of that video? I’d pay for it. It’s unfortunate he’s had the lecture taken down.
@@shazmosushiis there any way to get those lectures?
Ashley I don’t know if you read this - but thank you for sharing with the world these great individuals changing the world for the better. Your documentary’s always make me excited for the future - thank you!
Thanks so much for the kind words. Glad you enjoy em
Yeap. These are great. Very, very cool indeed. I loved the first series and they just keep on coming. Well done Ashley, well done mate...
Tom is an absolute 100% legit legend
This was so entertaining and honestly inspiring. Please keep doing this series!
What an inspiring Space Tale. Currently reading 'Elon Musk' by Walter Isaacson, and I came across Tom multiple times. So excited to finally see him up close.
No one reading that book is allowed here
@@AshleeVanceHelloWorld I was wondering how you felt about Isaacson's book. This answers my question! 😆
@@AshleeVanceHelloWorldobviously
@@angellacanforaWhat’s the controversy with the book?
@@cadennorris960 Only that Vance published a fascinating bio of Elon Musk and now
Walter Isaacson has published his own Musk bio.

Fantastic show watched the whole thing ❤
Best TH-cam content, sadly not getting the millions of views it should be.... the "art broll" to cover the top secret technology was next level awesome TV.
Carl Sagan would be proud.
This show was awesome. Thanks!
Wish him all the best! So cool to be living during a modern space race
Enjoyed This From The Caribbean 🇻🇨🚀
It's videos like these that I'm inspired for humanity's future!
Great documentary!
Another mind blowing episode from Ashlee Vance the world best space journalist
Such great quality and super interesting content!
What Tom said about putting servers and computing power on the moon with solar power in space powering it and beaming the results on Earth actually is a very interesting idea.
I wonder if having all the computer power or most of it ... exposed to a solar wave storm would be a risk for a total erase of the human civilization memory at that moment... ( for what I have heard of computers exposed to solar flares and its magnetic fields)...
what about using the Earth´s hot core first and all its volcanic energy as primary source?
Absolutely awesome video.
What an incredible guy. Ashlee is not too bad either :). Loved your book on Elon/SpaceX
Even if blue origin isn’t in LA would’ve liked to hear them mentioned. But still amazing video!! Much thanks!!
Awesome!!! Keep going.
AWESOME BLOOMBERG !!!!
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
loved it ashlee good job
Great video as always- love seeing the space industry continue to evolve. Will be interesting if companies like RocketLab can gain market share from SpaceX etc..
Rocket Lab has no intentions of competing with SpaceX, at least in the 5-10yr frame. Rocket Lab is a small payload launch company, whereas SpaceX is a medium to large.
@@VincentKarabouladMusique I stand corrected!
@@VincentKarabouladMusique In theory, but to make a reusable rocket, you don't do it in 2 years, you need more than 5 years, it will take a while to see that rocket
This video made me tingle
Tom Muller must be a descendant of one of the first German engineers developing the V2. His rocket skills are impressive ❤
His surname is actually German. :)
Bingo..... everybody kind of follows their father's footsteps. It's weird isn't it ???....
If he really German then pronunciation is moo ler not miu ler
Halfway through your latest book… awesome read… keep it up😍😎
Thx so much!
Singer? F40? GT3? Man living the dream!
This is awesomely beautiful, space tech pioneers appearing in the part of the USA first opened up by earlier pioneers! They are inspired, not deterred, by the vast distances of our solar system and its all thanks to the amazing earliest space tech pioneer Elon Musk and his SpaceX! Great coverage, as usual, by Ashlee Vance! I’m stoked! Did I just write stoke?😅
Fun and entertaining video kudos guys 😆
Excellent inspiring video. Thanks!
The Bird Mans intergalactic Phallus company = SpaceX 😄
With Blue Origin, Firefly, Axiom and SpaceX among its residents, I consider Texas at the forefront of the space industry here in the U.S. isn’t Houston called Space City???
Design, engineering and software...CA. Manufacturing and testing...Texas.
@@CLaFong I can see your point
“…From his carefree manner, it is clear that he no longer works for Elon….”😂😂😂
Thank you post the video❤🌏
Spacex built newspace and is the reason for this massive boom.
Excellent!
Tom is blessed 😂
Tom is a f***ing LEGEND!

Pretty cool
AMAZING

The cool thing about SpaceX is that it makes it seem like a goofy stoner losing money is "success". Truly inspiring.
The reason why Moon data centers powered by Solar panels won't work is the lack of atmosphere which on earth shields the surface from meteorites. The meteorite impact on the moon is constant and any large area solar farm will be subjected to impacts and damage.
oh wow what a fab. piece! Thank you so much. ANd thank you spac-X -- Elon for making this possible for AMerica!
Cool

Like Tom won a lottery. Meanwhile, there's the rest of us, working for the nameless startups in the last 15 minutes, hoping we vest before the buyout & the stonk options are worth more than 0 this time.
👍👍👍👍💓💓💓 super cool US government should invest on new startups

So probably in future earth will have a ring around its atmosphere like mercury but made up of space debris. Hope they clear it up fast

Whoever designed your new logo, left a gaping hole in there... 😂😂
WTH?! Mostly this is 2 guys reminiscing about the past and driving a gas guzzling relic porsche around LA. Why didn't you get James May for this?
you've wounded my soul
Its quaont that people fret about the fuel consumption of a small, light car while watching videos about rockets that burn more RP1 in one second than the total gross weight of the Porsche with both people in it.

I mean it is a spiritual experience when you earn wealth and do what gives you a kick .
I like Toms ambition to walk or ride on the moon. After Artemis 4 it seems like everything will be in place for private manned moon landings to happen. Initially prices may be similar to what it presently costs to just goto the ISS but eventually they may come down many times lower. Hundreds and eventually thousands of people will be landing on the moon every year.
If i was Elon i would demand 15 % of the companies that use his rockets. They are great but they eat off the bosses table .
The space between their ears has certainly been increasing.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂THE MASK
considering how much hardening is required to get a laptop in space... servers in space sounds like a big no...
Space hardening isn't as required as people made it out to be. One of the things SpaceX was able to pioneer that enabled low-cost rocketry was using off the shelf equipment rather than using super expensive trumped up ultra space hardened equipment like NASA does.
This has led to many companies outside of the military/space industrial complex companies, to also push this concept and through many trials they have found that in many cases a lot of equipment was being way overengineered.

Yeah sure you regularly send stuff to space and. Politics makes you choose to not use the cheapest rocket ride to space. Tell me your company so I can short it.
Bloomberg hire at least a grad student and not a scientifically illiterate reporter. This was not difficult material to explain. Witness the youtube videos that are more complex or Bloomberg’s own financial reporting. Don’t send no-nothings into the field to waste my time.
I think it's pronounced know nothing
Cool video. But Musk name is more like a clickbait. We don’t need to add his name on title to make video go viral.
I wouldn't have watched if it didn't
Well he practically enabled the aerospace industry to boom again.
Elon did Reboot Los Angeles Space Industry, so Bloomberg is showing you that Silly. 🤟
Until we learn how to live sustainably on Earth, I don't think we should be going anywhere. We've already trashed our atmosphere with space junk.
Exaggerated concern imo. Space is vast beyond comprehension but we shouldn’t litter it I agree.
