You chosen a heck of a song as your first country music reaction.
This song is like an anthem to us country folks. You'd be hard pressed to find someone outside of the urban US who doesn't know this song in America.

Thank you for reviewing this video, yes basically he is saying, "We say Grace, and we say Ma'am, and if you ain't into that, we don't give a damn" that you can live your life the way you want to, and we can live ours, does not mean we are stupid, or anything, just our expertise is not in the market, or books, but more of the basic instinctual survival skills, that I think a lot of people really need to learn, true hunting and fishing to name just two. And, he does not say where the 43 dollars came into play if the guy killed had it, or the store that was robbed had it, just a small amount of money is the cause of the robbery that caused his friend to perish. Anyway, again, thank you for watching, I truly hope that you enjoyed it, and will dive more into country music, like the other songs noted on Patreon. Cheers!

I guess that might have been about the money in the cash drawer. This song came out in 1988, so nearly everything is about 2 to 3 times more expensive 35 years later.

Grew up rural. Moved to the city at 20, lived there for ten years. The last 15 years I've been moving further and further north, away from that city. The last couple years have made me never want to go back.

somewhat similar here, split on being raised, the first decade was out in the country and then moved to the city after the blizzard of 1978, been in the city ever since. got used to the noisy neighbors, never could get used to the nosy ones though, still in the same spot for over 40 yrs.

This song is about the self sufficiency of rural people. They aren't reliant upon grocery stores and can eat during times when those in cities will panic. They hunt, they fish and they grow crops. Most even know what plants they can and can't eat in the wilderness. I'm a country boy from Florida for instance and I know how to survive in my environment. I can eat gators, snakes, turtles, possums, coons, rabbits and squirrels along with any fish as well as swamp cabbage and other plants if I need to. I can use a gun or bow or traps or a spear and I can improvise when needed. That's what this song is about.

Country music has some of the best melodic guitar riffs you'll find anywhere. The sound focuses on melody, timing, and expression. Basically country and blues need you to bring it from deep in the GUT. You can be as fancy as you want but Country and Blues follow the rule, if you can't feel it, you can't be it. Jonny Cash is no joke either.

The best thing about any good country music is that it tells a story that most people have gone through in some aspect of their lives.
I'm a country boy, can confirm, I'll be ok no matter what, I'm a certified mechanic, welder, carpenter. I have two pantries full of jarred vegetables I grew myself, two freezers full of deer, pork and fish and a generator that can hold me over for a month off the grid in case of hurricanes or floods. And plenty of guns and ammo to get more food or protect what I have.
If I can't build it, fix it, grow it, catch it or kill it, I can do without it.

  • @darrenshoults4620

Some of the best is Big John by Jimmy Dean, 16 Ton by Tennessee Ernie Ford, Kiss a Angel Good morning by Charlie Pride or Folsom Prison Blues, A Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash. Also 7 Spanish Angels by Willie Nelson and Ray Charles. There is a song covered by several artists, Kawaguchi done by Hank Williams Sr. And Charlie Pride both put their spin on it and do a great job of it. These are the ol timers of country music, love them all.

You will find that a lot - possibly even a majority - of country songs sound like stories put to music. You will also find the lyrics in general easier to understand than in a lot of rock songs. In country music tradition, the lyrics and message are as important as the music. There is an old saying: to play country music you only need "three chords and the truth".

Country folks are worldwide. It's a way of life not a geographic location. It's more about living with what you have not with what you want, doing what you can for yourself and family and friends who in turn help you with what they are good at until you can all do whatever it takes to get by.

at this time in the 80s, a lot of rural farmers lost their lands as small town america moved from agricultural to industrial, so being "country" was kinda looked down on as more kids left the farm life for college and a white collar profession, so Hank being Hank, let 'em know just how it is.
