Worlds Largest Slate Mine MAENOFFEREN PT1 OF 3

- Maenofferen quarry (also known as Maen Offeren quarry) is a major slate quarry in the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, north Wales and one of the major users of the Ffestiniog Railway. It continues to produce crushed slate on a limited scale under the ownership of the nearby Llechwedd quarry.
Geology
Slate is fine grained foliated Metamorphic rock that by low grade metamorphism uses shale by its alteration. Shale is composed of clay minerals and is normally abundant in quartz. Most shale is coloured light to dark grey, but can also have shades of green, red, black, purple and brown. Shale was formed in the tectonic movements and can be found in a sedimentary basin.
Total length on video of this explore was 4 hours but rest breaks were cut out to make the time now 3 hours.

The scenery inside and out of these mines is spectacular. Really enjoyed this 3 hour adventure.

I've been in these mines when I was at schools till got a piece of slate with owl 🦉 on it it was made into a coaster and picture on wall years ago also bought some false gold here and different stones from gift shop

Hi matt another good one, you picked the only sunny day, last time I was there back in 70's it was always wet misty typical welsh weather but you have to love wales..now climate change we have sun (if you beleive Greta) but that's another story. Keep um coming ;-)

So cool Matt I’ve been to Mesa verde such a fascinating place how the American Indians built that. From the top just looks like a massive canyon then you climb down and a whole load of buildings cut into the rock face

The last person who died in Maenofferen was hit on the head by a coin-sized piece of slate falling from the roof. A salutory tale, for those going in without any head protection...

Maenofferen was not the largest slate quarry, not even in the top 3, with the Oakley quarries, Cwmorthin and Llechwedd all being larger, with the Oakeley quarries being at least 4 times the size. Apart from that great video. God bless
Taffy got a big backpack on with jam sarnies for a week or two and a case of carling black labels or two to give him super human giggles and a kitchen sink...as water comes from the taps..just in case..
if this the place I'm thinking of then there's a public road that runs on top of hill, once went across with my delivery driver at the time, I was passenger right on edge of the drop, I fucking shit myself of the drop, wow massive drop.
