- These staples of the winter garden are among the most coveted of garden plants by those who know them, yet they are still relatively unknown outside of plant enthusiast circles. Because they don't flower quickly from seed and often finish flowering before most folks visit garden centers, hellebores are rarely found at the lower end mass merchants.
Hellebores have long been grown in gardens, although originally for their medicinal properties. Hellebores are filled with alkaloid toxins and have been used both as a poison and a purgative. Because of their toxicity, Hellebores are prized as deer-resistant garden plants for areas suffering from deer or similar wildlife pressures.
Hellebores are renowned for their tolerance of drought and neglect, although they truly thrive when grown in a moist, but well-drained soil. Hellebores are primarily European natives, growing in open meadows in Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Turkey, Greece, Italy, and even China, where the deciduous species Helleborus thibetanus can be found. While naturally a full sun plant, Hellebores make superb specimens for the light woodland garden. Learn more about Hellebores in our garden from JLBG Director Tony Avent.

So nice to see. I never knew the story about the Double Helleborus and I have been crossing them for over 25 years.
You have a great variety of hellebores 🌸🌸🌸👍
Thank you!
I fell in love with Helleborus 3 years ago and I have been using them in most of my clients' gardens. This video is an amazing lesson!
Thanks for sharing!
I received a beautiful Hellebore for Christmas. I live in zone 8b, New Bern, NC. Should I plant it outside now? I have other Hellebores that are thriving. Thanks for your help.
Hello! We would wait till spring to plant it, especially if it has new foliage and/or flowers. It is likely that this plant was grown in a greenhouse, and it may break dormancy early when planted outside mid-winter. A hard frost will kill the new foliage and may kill the plant. Happy gardening!
@Plantdelights thank you for answering!
Alternatively, a fine net bag could be tied around several hellebore buds at a similar stage of development on a single plant, & when they open, pollinate them by hand ~ & replace the net bag securely, so you can harvest the seeds.
Great info thankyou
Thank you for sharing your excellent knowledge and know-how. I have a question about the blooming time of this beautiful plant. Should they not bloom around the Christmas time? Your helleborus are blooming in the summer judging by the clothes you are wearing. How do you get them in bloom in summer? Best regards, Helen
Hi Helen! We have some Hellebores that bloom in December, most bloom in Winter and early Spring, and some hybrids that bloom well into Spring (late April, early May). This year the weather for the Winter Open House was very warm, hence the light clothes : )
Can anyone tell me the variety name @16:28? Looks awesome
I believe it is one of our hybrids Helleborus x hybridus 'Winter Delights Double Pink w/Spots'
I planted some hellebores last spring and this spring , only a few leaves came up but no flower buds. Are there varieties that flower later in the season ? Or is it not doing well
Hellebores are very tough, but they do not like soggy soil. And if the plant is small, it may not flower for a year or two.
Should I fertilize to promote growth ?
