    You can see why a thrust is so important with a katana even though the weapon is designed more for cutting. I think half of the lethal blows came from a thrust at the right time.

    • @ryufight7987
      @ryufight7987 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      A thrust is just the fastest way of hurting your opponent , musashi was a fan of the thrust wat of wielding a katana . especially when the arms are tired to make the above head cuts

      @Phillip Margrave that's because people sometimes have the tendency to take one theorie or say that as 1000 percent, the only truth or way 🤔
      But that's never the case in martial arts or swordmanship , it's the same with, for example, some people say one should only block with the thick side of your katana, not the sharp side that's also utter BULLSHIT 🤔 Masayuki Shimabukuro once said 🙄 do you think when in battle you think or care of if your sword gets damaged 🤣😅
      Swords damage anyway after battle it would have been chipped ectra , that's why you had to take care of them

  • @loganwolfram4216

    Note that for safety reasons, these sparring weapons are a LOT more flexible than real swords. One of the ways this is relevant is that they will not transfer energy in the same way when the opponent's sword is beat down or to the side. With these flexible swords, the defender can regain composure and move the sword back to the center line very quickly. With a more rigid real sword, a strong beat against your blade is difficult to recover from, meaning the attacker has more time to strike before the defender is able to recover. Another detail is that with sharp blades, the two blades will actually stick together if the edges make contact, even at an angle. So it is possible to push against the other sword differerntly. When the blades are dull, the blades will easily slide against each other in parries. Dull blades have a feeling of slipperiness that is very different to sharp blades. It's worth (carefully, professionally) going through partner exercises with real swords just to get a feel for it. Real, sharp swords have a feeling of precision and control that's hard to imagine if you've only ever attempted techniques with metal/wood/polymer sparring swords. Obviously you wouldn't spar with them though, that'd be nuts 😂

      @Logan Wolfram How is this done safely though? What kind of drills could you do in a practical sense.

    • @loganwolfram4216
      @loganwolfram4216 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@skyereave9454 Never felt particularly dangerous to me. I think it's probably less of a big deal than people tend to imagine. I think Roland Warzecha also has quite a few videos demonstrating drills with (Carolingian type) sharps. If you have good control and you and your partner are used to each other I don't think it's anymore dangerous than other activities. I've only practiced blade binding/slow speed attack and defense drills with a partner. I think it's similar to cutting practice in that it can help someone to understand intuitively how a real sword behaves, and then this understanding can be taken into sparring to make the practice more realistic. someone who's done a lot of cutting practice should have a much better understanding of what strikes would or would not be likely disable the opponent in sparring for instance, while someone without experience cutting may have difficulty understanding why a light touch or a bad cut was ignored. I think this is similar, but for understanding blade contact and why a sword can or can't be manipulated in a particular way. Performing a beat out of measure and without advancing on your opponent, for a simple example. How can you possibly hit them with your sword? You can't reach them, but you can see how the stiffness of a real sword changes the dynamics of a beat. Or practicing gaining a dominant blade position back and fourth with your partner. You can see how the swords don't slide the same way dull swords do, but how could you hit each other? There's no forward momentum, you aren't entering each other's space. That's why I say it sounds more dangerous than it actually is.

    Yasugi Specialty Steel, which was developed based on the katana ironmaking method, is the modern high-grade steel and cutlery steel.
    Japan's Hitachi metals developed Yasugi Specialty Steel (yasugi hagane) from tatara iron manufacturing around 1970 and built a factory for sponge iron.
    Yasugi Steel has the same properties as katana, so it is hard, impact-resistant, and hard to break. Yasugi Specialty Steel is a cutting tool steel, high-end kitchen knife materials (kai corporation, zwilling), razor materials (Gillette, Schick, Wilkinson razor steel), automobile parts materials, automobile engine parts, aircraft engine parts, etc. used for its purpose.
    In the 14th century, katana craftsmen migrated to Seki City and produced katana in large quantities. Seki City manufactures a wide variety of products such as kitchen knives, knives, scissors, medical equipment, and industrial machinery

      basically, since they're sparring with steel weapons that hit harder than modern sabre fencing does, they have to use HEMA gear. if you want to learn more about what's used, search around for "hema gear" on youtube. for sparring katanas you need the same level of protection as longsword uses.

      These are the same two guys from the kendo vs kenjutsu and kenjutsu vs kenjutsu videos. They are both kendoka, although one has also studied koryu, which probably explains their footwork. In this video they are using steel trainers which are much heavier than rubber bokuto, which means slower recovery times so they are probably more cautious. Hogu Yeom has also had more unrestricted sparring since those last videos so he has fewer blindspots for the unusual kenjutsu techniques.

      The original purpose of HEMA seems to have been to reconstruct historical martial arts from manuscripts and "experimental archeology". For japanese stuff we have surviving bujutsu traditions and the manuscripts are intentionally esoteric, thus when we understand the manuscripts there is nothing to reconstruct and it is quite apparent that the superficial interpretation is not the correct one.
      What you seem to want is japanese flavored free sparring. The trouble that you have is that the current generation of kenjutsu masters seem to be quite content with kendo for publuc purposes, any variation is for private purposes.

The only reason it hasn’t gone this route already is because of cultural reasons, and I’m willing to bet, if they actually shifted towards this form of sparring, their sparring would look less… interesting
