    This HAS to be one of THE BEST bass lines ever written. I'm SO glad I was an L42 fan WAY before youtube. It feels like I'm in on the secret. I tried playing it, Ramon, and it's impossible, at the moment. Mark brings out the stops on this one. All his best technique AND he's singing just to rub it in. He and Geddy Lee are from the same Cygnus X-1.

    gorgeous sound on that alembic, i never much went for marks alembic tone in comparison to the kingbass or jaydee, but i do like this one :D

    I usually play this line with my eyes closed, for some reason that helps me keep it locked. I also used a piece of rubber on my thumb to increase the bounce a bit, avery little bit helps!

    Super clean and perfectly timed playing. I just can't get my slap playing to sound this clean. Please tell me you are using a compressor lest I shoot myself.

    Absolutely brilliant stuff Ramon. I have about 25 % of it so far in terms of accuracy and melody..need a few more weeks at least to get anywhere near this.. I have a Jaydee SN 2 btw. I think my E string is a bit high..not sure if adjusting it will help. .. it feels a bit dead even with new strings..

    • @ramon709
      @ramon709  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man :) This is definitely a bass line that needs determination and endurance to master. With youtube nowadays you can slow down the song/video which should help to get the details down. A high string action is not bad persé, but you will have to slap harder on the E to get a decent sound out of it. I remember a video of Mark King in the early 80's where he had a really high string action (playing Micro kid) and he had no problem with it. A low string action is easier to play and to keep up speed of course. Good luck!

    Is that a Fernandes FAB bass ???? I had one and regret selling it !!!!
    EDIT : How the Heck does Mark play these KILLER bass lines AND sing ???
    RUSH and LEVEL 42 = Two BEST bands of all time !!!!!

    • @ramon709
      @ramon709  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's a FAB-170. Maybe you can get a hold of an other one? They come up for sale every now and then, but it's hard to find a good one that hasn't been messed with.
      And my theory is that Mark King is secretly an alien that has 2 sets of brains. Many UFO's have been spotted above the Isle of Wight! :P

      @@ramon709 I so agree, Ramon !!! How does he play these incredible bass lines AND sing over them ?? ALIEN....
      I owned a FAB, restored it to like new, and like a fool sold it.

    Hey I'm still quite a beginner with slapping, could you recommend me a couple of tunes or albums where i can use to train my ear and learn cos the ones i have heard are usually pretty fast and hard to catch note by note. :S Any advice on how you started with slapping?

    @JanB56 Hey Yw!
    Level 42 is an amazing band, you check out some more of their songs if you haven't done so already :)

  • @Jake_Effect_Kid

    i was gonna say, does sound very jaydee'esque... So how much would one of these copy be?

  • @ramon709
    @ramon709  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks man. Yeah I know what you mean, Mark always used the full hifi setting on the alembic, sounds great for some songs, but not so for these more aggressive bass lines.
    My Alembic is a copy (made by Fernandes) btw, not the real deal. It can sound as an alembic, but also a bit like a Jay Dee :)

  • @ramon709
    @ramon709  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @jonannlou Thanks a lot J, yeah the beginning is a bit tricky, for the occasion I tried to play it like MK does, normally I use different finger positions to make it easier :)
    I used a bit to much tonefilter here, but it helped to boost the mid tones a bit.

  • @ramon709
    @ramon709  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TheWhippinpost Yeps, strings are quite dead here and I used to much tone filter to reduce the hi-fi sound and I had the Q-switches set to passive, sounded good in the room though!
    Thanks :)

  • @ramon709
    @ramon709  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks! yeah I couldn't play it like this overnight, but practice makes perfect :)

    Wow, forgot about this tune - haven't heard it for yonks. Well played. Are your strings old? Sound a bit "flat" on this.
    New camera?

    Wow..... Well played. My favourite MK tune.
    Please teach me to slap like that and I'll give you all my savings. Currently standing at £1.48.

      It's mostly about repetition. Practice, practice... and then practice some more. You need to teach your own hands what to do till it becomes automatic movements (muscle memory).

    Ridiculously cheap actually considering the quality, I bought mine for only 800 Euro's. The average selling price is between 800 and 1100 depending if your lucky and if it is still in original state. They are very rare though so good luck finding one :)

      7 years later.... this Alembic copy from Fernades is now being sold in the 2500/3000 $ range. Give it 10 more years and you will have to pay 5k for this bass (in original condition).

      It's is not the easiest lavel 42 bass line that you can learn, but it is totally worth the effort :)
