I am posting this video to help the current ongoing investigations for the collapse causes. I just posted "Champlain Tower South exterior" filmed on 2/26/2021 condo collapse Surfside. I would have never thought from looking at just the inside of the building how badly in shape the structure stood. It goes to show that looks can be deceiving.

      Yes, concrete damage can hide. Even a small crack can indicate severe structural damage if properly analyzed. And to top it off, it's in the garage, so of course it doesn't need to be addressed right away being underground and all. Out of sight, out of mind, I guess...

      Although I wouldn't get the place mixed up with the penthouse, parking garages are considered a major plus. *And she had 2 spaces, on the beach.* I don't drive right now, but here in the DMV, it's good to have one. You will pay for it, but your car can remain secure and warm and cozy when it snows. You don't have to park blocks away, so much so that you need to take a cab back to your place. Some people even rent their assigned spaces out.

    I worked in both towers just at the completion of construction. Mostly the north tower. Those damn garages leaked from day one. We used to get complaints from residents all the time that "the building is leaking". The calcium/mineral deposits would ruin paint jobs because many tenants were seasonal and they would park their car, go back to there home country, then return months later to find a mess on their car. Champlain North had the same problem. I know they've been cleared but I bet there's hidden damage in the foundation for sure. My condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.

      Those condos were not considered “high end” until a few ago. Surfside has become a popular destination over the years by the younger crowds. This area used to be dead with only a few apartment high rises. It was a retirement haven. Miami area housing prices used to be very affordable. That’s why you see a lot of older elderly Hispanic and Jewish senior citizens in those buildings. A lot of transplants from NY, Boston, Philly area. A friend of mine bought hers a few years back with her mom. She’s only a teacher. She sold it after her mom passed. She made a nice profit from it. Thank God she did. That sale saved her life.
      Not that you said it but other video posts have been horrible and saying “rich people” problems. Yes, there were expensive condos there but majority of people who lived there weren’t. They’ve been there for years.

I think it was a combination of the association being disorganized and also getting poor advice on the actual condition of the building. In Canada where I live, condos are required to do an inspection (Reserve Fund Study) every 5 years. This maintains the integrity of the structure but also makes sure funds are available to complete any required work. I hope the US learns from this tragedy and changes their laws around condo inspections. 40 years is too long and allows a complacent board to kick the can down the road way too far. Thanks for posting this. One thing I find notable, which I haven't seen anyone else mention, is that the column pictured at 4:41 was originally planned to be much larger in the Aug 1979 Basement level framing plan. This column was originally intended to be about 3x wider in the direction to the right of frame and was supporting a beam going in this same direction according to the Aug 1979 Lobby level framing plan. However, these plans were revised in Jan 1980 with the notes, "Change of column type" and "Change of dimensions", and the beam is also removed. I hope that these revisions were made for good reasons, such as improving the structural integrity of the building, and not for bad reasons, such as fitting a couple more cars into this already sketchy bathtub garage. Unfortunately, it looks like the latter may be true.

Did the 4th part get built last and was more solid and so it stood? I haven't seen anyone discuss this point yet and am curious why didn't it all fall down? Why did that last part stay standing? The failure started east of the elevator shaft and proceeded north and east, but was unable to propagate west due to the strength of the core.

      Pause and look carefully at the column between parking spaces 27 and 28 at 4:49 in the video. It is the one with the cone beside it. Compare the shape of it with the columns in front, and behind, from the camera angle. • @michaeljarosz4062
    @michaeljarosz4062 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    As an architect, what I saw in this video of the parking garage struck me, and it wasn't the puddles. The columns connect to the floor slab directly without any apparent reinforcement for shear.. In layman's terms, the columns could poke through the slab, which is exactly what they did on that tragic day. Normally, the top of each column is surrounded by a thickened slab with additional rebars to take the shear (poke through) stresses. It could be that the slab was thick enough to contain adequate extra rebar for shear but events prove otherwise. Pictures of the collapsed pool deck show the columns, complete with their identifying numbers, standing upright with the fallen slab lying at their base. Classic poke through.
    EDIT: I just saw another video of a walk through of the collapsed pool/parking area, close up to the columns. The columns were cleanly sheared at the former floor level with a couple of rebars dangling. Looks like my speculation (see above) about inadequate shear protection was correct..

    • @razorrazor9238
      @razorrazor9238 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, normally you would have mushroom heads to increase the shear depth, as well as alot of diagonal rebar & stirrups however most likely the main flaw relates to the pool deck slab tied to the existing building. Like seeing a space under a foundation makes me think like how is that thing supported.. it seems impossible. Also, i don't like the ideas of condo's in general. I like privacy and independance from neighbors, to do things on my own time and pace. Would prefer to pay for repairs on my own terms. Seeing weird stuff in a common area that is not under the control of my individual unit would make me worried. At the VERY least i would ask - does the HOA fee INCLUDE repairs of this. If i got anything but an absolute yes i would absolutely move on. The HOA fees in that place are exorbitant. You can take care of a small house thrice over for that monthly amount, and on your own terms.

Supposedly state of the art programming. But no fire escapes .no elevator s living on the top floor you had to drop a rope tied to a back pack to get your groceries upstairs ..couldn't carry all up several flights of main stairs much less deal with a infant and other small children in tow. . someone down town had to be paid off for that building plans to get approved. .SAD. When really they don't care a nugget about QUALITY construction. In the construction industry there is rampages of drug/alcohol addicted staffers on payroll when they put these buildings together. Not to many think about that aspect..goes to teach us that people accept superficial ly. What they see is what they is buy into. Good looks. Lousy characters.. Rebars are not supposed to get wet, if so, they oxidize and that increases their volume, put tremendous pressures on their surroundings. If the concrete for the slabs was not poured in a continuous manner, this may results in layering because of the failure to make chemical bounding, this will severely defeat the steel reinforcement no matter how strong it is and will provide access to water. Punching through slabs could be the result of this phenomenon.

    Well you'd never guess there was such a devistating and deadly horror , by looking at how beautiful they were......so sad...God love them , and my they rest in peace . It's heartbreaking to consider the grief and pain the families and friends are experiencing....God love them. 🙏♥️

      Above ground level looked great. I saw another video of going through the problems that were revealed in the video in the garage. Look at the ceiling in the garage. There are all kinds of issues showing up. I probably wouldn't have picked up on them if I were there a year ago

      @@WhittyPics It's scary to realize how many other buildings are out there with serious maintenance issues... but yeal this building obviously was much worse than the residents knew....sad , very sad.
