No one will ever top Heath Ledger for me as the Joker. There was just something special about him. This is such a classic movie!
It is incredible, each time i watch the film I fell differently about the Joker. First watch he was terrifying, the next time he was funny, sometimes a madman, on another watch a criminal genius
💯
He was great but the guy from the joker movie was just as good on every respect.
Two people have won oscars for playing the Joker now. Both were incredible. RIP Heath though...
@@DeadlyBeast205 I agree.
"You think you can steal from us and just walk away?!"..."yea"...😂 still my favorite part in the entire movie. The delivery is perfect.
Ya love when reactors like her catch and appreciate that quick perfect answer. Lol
Answering a rhetorical question in such an intense moment 😂
He said that like " ok i took this what are you going to do about it.? " lol
Like cinewins said "heh honesty"
I still get chills hearing Gordon's ending dialogue with that cut to black. I saw this opening night and it was an incredible atmosphere in the theater.
Yeah I remember getting tickets on that Friday and how packed the theater was, and how there was silence in the theater at that ending.
I remember the memes of how his speech made no sense 😂
Standing ovation in my theater. Was incredible
saw this way to many times to count and yes, that dialogue to end the movie is always gives me chills! absolutely amazing movie! still best superhero movie and just one of the best movies in general
Man I saw this in theatres 3 times, it was THAT good.
"Some men just want to watch the world burn"
One of the best movie lines of all time.
Batman: That bandit in the forest in Burma, did you catch him?
Alfred: Yes
Batman: How?
Alfred: We burned the forest down.
Seems like that's the only way to stop an agent of chaos. With chaos.
I’ll show you, when the chips are down, these uh, these civilized people, they’ll eat each other. I love that quote and honestly I actually do believe that a decent amount. Our own selfish desires are unmatched.
I always remember that line from an interview with a veteran talking about what it was like as a soldier in WW2 in the BBC documentary "World at war"
Michael Cain. Best Alfred ever.
Michael Caine nails that speech.
"The tongue thing" was a happy accident from the prosthetics on his face for the scars. They kept wanting to come off, so Heath repeatedly did that with his tongue to try and keep them in place. It turned out being a creepy mannerism, just like Asia thinks!
Supposely
@@jacobruiz7642 I just commented about this as well before seeing your post.
@@clarenceworley3714 Alright!
@@jacobruiz7642 sorry my comment was for @KrisCynical
I must have clicked on your name without realizing I had done so.
@@clarenceworley3714 Its all good. Thanks for clearing that up, i was like huh?...lol!
Although Ledger won the Oscar posthumously I believe he still would have had he lived. This was a perfect performance. All of these years later Ledger is still missing. Thanks for reacting to this absolutely legendary film.
Imagine him and Bane in Rises together
When joker is holding Rachel telling her how he got his scars, when he grabs her face, that wasn’t scripted and she was actually terrified. She’s looking over at the director at that point trying to see if anyone would do anything but they just kept rolling. Love this movie. RIP Heath
I was about to say this. You can see the literal fear in her eyes. That's not even acting.
the same thing happened in At Close Range between Sean Penn and Christopher Walken. they weren't getting the scene right so Sean went to the prop table and got the REAL gun and put it in Chris's face. now these days we've had too many accidents so that kind of thing could never happen, even back then it wasn't supposed to happen. but when you watch Walken's reaction in that scene it's real fear and the way it plays on screen is phenomenal. i think At Close Range is a fantastic movie, it's probably not something for reaction channels because of the slower pace and lack of action. but if you are into films, acting, etc it's one to watch.
Maggie was friends with Heath lol. Her brother and heath did a movie together
When Heath walked in on that scene the man who played Alfred said he was so shocked that he forgot his lines.
@@TheConnonedrum Michael Caine
The movie theater experience seeing this film was like no other I have been part of. People were hanging on every word Joker said and every movement he made made us gasp and react. This is a dam near perfect movie, everything pulled together seemlessly. Heath Ledger really knocked it out of the park with his performance and it will always be one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema.
Only thing thing that compared to me in theaters was Jackass 2 lol. Completely different vibe, but they were both equally hype in their own way. Never seen a new movie have such a response from people in the theater. I still see movies in theaters all the time. However, the theaters are mostly dead, and I've NEVER seen a packed theater reaction like I did for TDK and Jackass 2. I miss experiences even close to approaching that these days.
My theater cheered when Batman’s bike flipped the truck and rode up the wall to turn around.
It’s the best theater experience I’ve ever had.
It ranks as one of my favorites. I screamed when they flipped that truck!
I saw it opening night at midnight against my will (not a big fan of comic books, my mom made me go with our church youth group because I "needed friends"). I've never experienced anything like it. People walking around in batman costumes, group chants, etc.). When Batman flipped the semi and the bike hits the wall and does the about face, people literally stood up and applauded. Still get chills remembering.
I was a young boy when this movie came out, and I wanted to see it so bad because Batman was my favorite comic book character. But everybody was saying that it isn't a movie for kids, it's too dark, so my mom wouldn't let me see it. Well my dad came to my room one night and said we had a trash bag of clothes to take to Goodwill. It was late, maybe 9 pm. He told my mom he wanted me to come so he would have some company. Well on the way to Goodwill, we stopped at the movie theater, he had gotten us two tickets to The Dark Knight for a 10 pm showing. I have probably watched this movie fifty times since then. One of the core memories of my childhood for sure.
Heath Ledger was absolutely amazing in this movie. I remember hearing about him locking himself up in a motel room for 30 days, keeping a diary to prepare himself for the role and was dumbfounded by his commitment to the craft. I also remember hearing about his death shortly after and how sad it was to have lost such a great talent at so young an age.
15 years later it's still one of the greatest performances and to me, this is STILL the greatest superhero movie of all time.
Each time I watch Ledger he reaffirms an undeniable fact, he deserved that Oscar. An amazing performance.
This is not only one of the best superhero movies of all time, it’s one of the best movies of all time. One of the few movies back then to break the $1 billion mark in the theaters. Heath Ledger absolutely crushed it. I was so upset when he passed. I was just starting to move him up to one of my favorite actors. He will be missed dearly.
The hype around this movie was absolutely insane. The theaters were jam packed through past midnight. And when the title popped up at the end, the place just erupted. Amazing movie.
The hype around this movie was so insane it cause a mass shooting in a theater, lol.
Christopher Nolan allowed Heath Ledger to film his own “Joker hostage video,” Nolan had enough trust in Ledger to produce something aligned with his vision of the Joker- chaotic, and wildly ruthless. Also, Ledger kept a diary of how he trained to get/stay in the Joker’s mindset- one of his things was a picture of a hyena, which was inspiration of the cackling laugh throughout the movie. Such a masterclass in acting, gone too soon 😢
It wasn't just filmed, it was directed by Heath as well.
@brucef310 it was supposed to be, which made it genius
This will always be one of my favourite movies. The saddest part is Heath Ledger never got to see the overwhelming applause everyone gave/gives him for portraying The Joker the way he did. I always can’t wait for him to come onto the screen, that’s when you know you did a phenomenal job
The twists and turns in the story.
Acting. Dialogues. Music. Cinematgraphy.
This isn't even a superhero movie.
This is a straight up crime drama with a superhero character in it. We haven't seen anything like this since then.
This movie is SPECIAL!
"You're Gonna Love Me!!!".... Asia's Batman impression was spot on. Love it!!! 😄
Rip to Heath ledger man he really was one of a kind. I love when people react to any movie he has ever done but this one really shows his acting talent cause he took villains to the next level. I haven’t really seen an actor play a villain like he has since.
The is not related to the comment, but you guys should watch True Detective (it's a show, not a movie but you'll really like it)
His performance is in an exclusive class including those of Sir Anthony Hopkins and Kathy Bates.
@@danwiththeplans gotta toss Gary oldmen and Tom Hardy into that mix too
Heath Ledger was a Daniel Day Lewis type actor ( one of the greatest ever) but Heath Ledger was given shitty rolls... and he still made them good or great...he just wasn't written in the right things
@Corey Rees And probably Giancarlo Esposito. And definitely Javier Bardem. It's a short list, but making it requires optimally delivering amazing character writing.
Man, I remember almost crying in the theater thinking Gordon was dead. I love that character.
While I never condom domestic violence, he 100% deserved that slap from his wife.
By now, you realize just how intense Heath Ledger's amazing Oscar Award winning performance as The Joker was. It was both haunting and very disturbing, but he was focused and in control most of the film. Legendary performance and no other actor will capture the Joker quite like Heath did. As Alfred said," Some people just want to watch the world burn.....", that was the Joker's way, Enjoy.
Unfortunately, without his death I doubt he wins the Oscar. Superhero movies are often overlooked.
@@mdmyer Idk, it was definitely an Oscar winning performance. I think he would have won, anyway.
@@brianmcmaster5112 I think it would have gone to Phillip Seymore Hoffman, awards shows seem to love that guy after Capote. Anyways, my point was that certain genres are overlooked; even if they have good acting.
My dad was always a DC and mostly Batman-Joker fan, i was born in 2004 and de would watch the animated series that came out the same year, when i grew up i watched this movie with him for the first time and its a moment i will never forget, still my fave movie till this day, its not perfect, not even close but it reminds me of my dad and the good memories
RIP Dad, you made me the person im today 💕
After watching your "Batman Begins" reactions, I could not wait to see both of your reactions to "The Dark Knight". AND THE BOTH OF YOU DIDN'T DISAPPOINT !!! Phenomenal reaction video you two !!! To Heath Legder for posthumously winning an Academy Award for his performance in this film: R.I.P. Keep it going you two !!! 🤡
Reason i love Heath's performance as the Joker is that he was able to portray the character as what he is at his core. A pure, unrelenting force of nature, one that is feared by heroes and villains alike because no one can predict what he will do and they know there's nothing he wont do
With a very screwed up sense of humor, courtesy of Jonathan Nolan. Everything he does is perfectly normal, just SLIIIIIIGHTLY off...
"What doesn't kill you only makes you... stranger" (instead of stronger)
"(S)laughter is the best medicine" (on the truck they use to intercept Dent's prison van)
......and my personal favourite, the vehicle on fire blocking the street that forces Dent's prison van onto the lower levels,
......is a fire truck.
Cause it's a truck. On fire.
I'm sitting in a pitch black theatre with everyone on the edge of their seats, and I burst out laughing *wipes her eyes* Oh Lord, I've got problems, I'm sorry. Best wishes my friend, keep having fun gaming horribly or otherwise!
His appearance also I think it encapsulates Joker perfectly
*********Heath Ledger won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and it was presented Posthumously after his Death. in 2009.
37:50 - 38:00/
Fun fact: the whole mischarge where Joker looks confused about the bombing was an outtake! The pyrotechnics and explosives genuinely stopped for a few seconds. That wasn't supposed to happen.
To Heath's loving credit, he knew this would be a one-take shot. That's why he pretends to check the detonator to give the explosive experts a few seconds to continue the demolition. That hospital was actually set to be torn down. So Nolan got permission from the city of Chicago to film the Dent scenes in there. Leading to the wide shot of the whole structure being destroyed!❤
The Joker laughing as he fell off the building gives me chills everytime.
Seen it 5 times at the theaters. Probably my fav Superhero movie ever. So great. Rip Heath Ledger.
That was priceless! When the copycat Batman hit the window, both of you nearly jumped out of your own skins. 😂😂😂
Gordon's speech at the end along with the brilliance of Hanz Zimmer always gives me goosebumps
He would sometimes stay in character even when the scene was over. He had a diary that he wrote as Joker and ways that he could kill Batman. He really took this on as a chance to make a statement. And it worked. Incredible performance by Heath.
Glad you are reacting to this.
Edit: made it seem like he never came out of character while shooting, which is definitely not true.
That's simply not true. Everyone that worked with him said that in between takes he was back to being Heath and joking around with the cast. There are countless interviews of the cast talking about how he was not in character at all times.
@Hiking with Tim ok... I was watching a documentary that said he would sometimes for sure. I guess my comment made it seem like he was in character the entire day.
I remember a pic of heath in character jumping over bale in character on a skateboard on set tho.
@@Beavetowski only because you edited your comment haha
@@TheHi_King 😄
The hero is only as impressive as the villain. The antagonist MAKES the protagonist. Heath Ledger's Joker 🤡 has set the standard. He was amazing. As usual, LOVED the reaction!!!
I've said this for years! Very much the same for Darth Vader/ Luke Skywalker
That ending monologue gets me teary eyed every time and I don't care.
“He’s a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A *Dark Knight* “
That part where Batman rides of into the night sends chills through my body
lol when Joker says "LOOK AT ME" and BJ sits up straight lmao probably my fav Joker line
Heath was made for this role and he knew it. As did everyone else when the film came out. RIP Mr. Ledger.
My parents took me to see this in theaters because they knew I was upset about Heath Ledger passing away. That was when I was in high school and he had been my celebrity crush for years lol. Such a great performance. RIP 💕
There are a lot of different versions of the Joker in the comics, and I've always preferred the crazy terrifying version over the goofy one. So back in the day, when I heard Heath Ledger was going to be Joker, I was all like "That pretty boy actor guy? That's gonna be terrible!" I was so incredibly wrong. This was a an absolutely legendary performance. Damn shame we lost him.
Pretty much everyone said that. Then there were rumors coming out when they were filming, that he was amazing. I think the fact that everyone expected him to be bad, just made his performance that much greater in everyone’s eyes at the time. There was absolutely no question that he was going to win the Oscar.
@@roems6396 so sad he died before to know that everyone loved him.
@@wenneq2651 yea unfortunately
That being said, goody can mean cartoonish, and cartoonish can be horrifying(see: Fred Kreuger)
@@StreetHierarchy True, there has to be that contradiction of a sort of comedic element to make him all the more terrifying. I guess I meant "goofy" like Cesar Romero.
I can't believe how well this movie still holds up. The trilogy actually. But Dark Knight specifically is really good. Something about this time period I guess, because on the flip side with Marvel, there's the first Ironman which I watched again recently for the first time in forever, and it holds up as well.
This is my #11 all-time favorite movie. The fact that two different actors have won Oscars playing the Joker proves what and amazing character he is. Heath was amazing. Just watching this reaction hurt my feelings all over again when he says that he and Batman were meant to do this together. They're kinda soulmates. I believe Nolan meant for him to return in another film. 😢
You guys will have to watch the Joaquin Phoenix version eventually. Also great but Heath here put it one of the greatest acting performances in movie history. 🙏🏻
The speech at the end leading up to the title always gives me chills! Plus Heath Ledgers Joker is a master class in acting and portraying a villain. RIP
Love Heath's performance in this. I really liked what he brought to this character and how he made it his own. He is also great in his other movies. I have no idea why but for me this is one of my comfort movies that I can keep watching and noticing new things everytime.
This is one of the best movies ever made. I hesitated to say that when it first came out because I thought it was just a honeymoon phase, but it has now stood the test of time.
Heath should have gotten all of the Oscar's for his performance in this one. It is just down right scary... And there were some crazy stories about him during the production of this movie. Crazy good movie and a villain performance out of this world...
This is 100% a top 10 movie of all time.
The tone when he yells "LOOK AT ME!" gives me nightmares :D insanely talented actor!
This was such an amazing movie. It didn't even seem like a superhero movie at all. Incredible acting and performances from everyone and what a Joker!!!!!
"Do i look a guy with a plan?"
Another great line. He doesn't do things for reasons. He is the avatar of chaos.
The single greatest superhero movie of all time. Heath Ledger's Oscar winning performance as the Joker still brings me to tears. Perfection.
Fun Fact: When Heath Ledger first gets off the elevator, that was the first time Alfred's actor (Michael Caine) had seen him in full makeup. Originally, Caine was supposed to have a line as Joker got off the elevator, but was so shaken by the appearance of Ledger in makeup that he froze up, and Ledger just went with it. Also, Rachel's actress Maggie Gyllenhaal (Who was a close friend of Ledger's) was legitimately terrified of Ledger during this scene. His "Do you know how I got these scars?" scene was completely improvised and you can see gyllenhaal's legitimate fear on her face in the scene.
Such a great sequel. I saw this several times in the theatre/ imax when it came out. Glad y'all enjoyed it!
I remember watching this movie on midnight on opening night in 2008......still chills from that night. most people thought the joker would flop in this movie when the choice for heath ledger to play him was made. that night he changed everyone's mind and changed the joker character in films forever. just amazing.
This is the strongest film in the trilogy. Director Christopher Nolan drew influence from HEAT (1995) also recommended watching (the bank manger in the opening is also in HEAT) Prior to filming, Nolan had screened movies for the crew to take notes on how to capture the right vibes. HEAT was one of films Nolan had the crew watch and take notes on
37:53- fun fact- originally the whole building was supposed to blow up, but because there was a stall, the actor improvised this scene by turning back unfazed and continued pressing the button. #RIP heath ledger 😢
Fun fact, when the joker blows up the hospital and he's walking away, and then there's a little pause and he keeps pressing the button like the explosions wernt working, well they really weren't working lol so he kind of improved that part. Another good reaction guys! Make sure u watch the next one, Dark Knight Rises, in my opinion it's ALMOST as good as this one, it's really good.
I heard somewhere that Nolan said that wasn't true but who knows.
The scene that I know he said was true was that Ledger and the actor playing the fake Batman went off and recorded that torture scene on their own and when Nolan saw it he put it in the movie.
@@AFC-ef4gs Yeah it's not true about the explosions being faulty. Just another case of people believing whatever they read on the internet.
Asia and BJ.... the guy who played The Joker also played Gabrielle in The Patriot which you guys watched. Teriffic actor. Shame he passed away not long after The Dark Knight.
😢 We realized that! You’re right, such a talent. RIP
Thanks Fam!
Heath Ledger, the actor that plays the Joker (and also played Gabriel in The Patriot), died before this film came out and won an Oscar for his performance.
Fun fact. the mask Joker wore at the beginning was the same Ceasar Romero wore in his first appearance on the 60s show
I love the performances of Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart as The Joker and Two-Face. 🦇🃏🎭
It's crazy BJ made the comparison between Gotham and Rome in the start of the video given how Harvey Dent uses the same example in the movie. So hyped you guys watched this one, really enjoyed the reaction. Felt like rewatching one of my fav movies with some friends or something. And y'all both pretty much picked up on everything, like even Joker switching the addresses cause he knew Batman would try to save Rachael.
Hey, Thanks Henry, much love to you
@@ReelinwithAsiaandBJ hell yeah love back at you, really enjoy what you two do, made my day a little brighter for real. looking forward to more breaking bad!!!
To be honest...Ra's al Ghul makes the same comparison in Batman Begins, sooo **inception**!
@@StreetHierarchy Haha i totally forgot about that!!
Harvey foreshadowed his self with his own quote "you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain " .. 🔥 movie can't wait for the 3rd reaction‼️happy yall are liking it‼️
Little fun fact, Michael Caine had some lines during the fundraiser dinner but he was terrified of seeing Heath Ledger in full costume and the way he was acting that couldn't say his lines and by the end Christopher Nolan decided to just not use Michael in that scene. For an experienced actor to react like that, so afraid, that really meant Heath was spot on. Heath became the Joker and turned that role into a masterpiece, RIP Heath.
Crazy thing tho, Bane made the Joker looked an amateur when it came to being the "bad guy". As perfect as The Joker was in this movie Bane was in the 3rd the ultimate villain
Thank you for reacting to this! When I first heard Heath had been cast as the Joker I laughed out loud and said "welp, someone's gonna be fired over this"...I've never been more wrong in my life and have never been happier about it lol
To this day Heath's performance is my favorite interpretation and will not be replaced. I really liked Joaquin's interpretation and Hamill did great voice work, but Heaths covered all facets of the character for me and I'm forever in love lol 🥰😍
I honestly never paid any attention to HL before this movie but have learned to appreciate him over the years. Even my uncle, a comic book collector and one of the grumpiest, pickiest men on earth is a fan of Heath's interpretation and says it is the best. That's not an easy achievement lol.
Also, for your boat theory, he would have had snipers waiting for people to jump off. Escape would not be an option. And as you can see he was going to blow up one, or probably both, of the boats either way. So even though they chose not to blow one another up, he was going to blow one or both of them up and say they did it to each other, hence the "gotta do everything yourself" line. He was gonna do it himself just to make everyone think the people chose to do it to further destroy everyones morale. Either way the Joker wasn't going to let people live and just walk away. Not his style lol.
Also, dont let conspiracy theorists/poor researchers tell you that playing the role of the Joker killed him. IT DID NOT!!! Heath passed away while filming the movie after TDK and it was due to complications from pneumonia. There is a documentary on it and there are interviews with both Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent) and Michael Jai White (Gambol, mob member) about how Heath behaved during filming. He was the Joker while cameras were rolling and Heath when they were off. It's that simple. He enjoyed playing the role. He had fun with it.
Yes he locked himself away for a month in a hotel room to develop the character and get into a mindset for him, but he came out just fine and didn't stay in character outside of filming, etc. He was a perfectly normal dude playing a character. That's it.
On his next film he developed pneumonia which weakened his respiratory system, he was a heavy smoker which also weakened his respiratory system, he took some medication for his pneumonia which supressed his respiratory system to help reduce coughing, and then took some pain meds on top of the pneumonia meds which further supressed his respiratory system and he stopped breathing in his sleep. It's nothing more than that. That's how a lot of ODs from pain meds happen unfortunately, the supression of the respiratory system and then breathing stops completely. His masseuse found him when she arrived for their appt. At first she thought he was sleeping but then realized he wasn't breathing. Unfortunately if was already too late. It was a horrible mistake and it really is that simple, so please stay away from the drama queens, etc who say otherwise because it's just not true. He left behind a daughter, Matilda, with actress Michelle Williams. She's possibly named after the national anthem of Australia, his home country, Waltzing Matilda, but I'm not positive.
Regardless, he was an amazing actor and he made a stupid mistake mixing his medications and it cost him his life. There's no conspiracy involved. Thank you for the reaction and for listening 🥲
This should have more likes great comment
Look im a Huge Heath fan and I think his Joker was one of the best performances in the history of film but let's not pretend he didn't have a serious drug problem...and this is coming from a former long time opiate addict (30mg percs otherwise known as roxy or oxycodone, which eventually led to heroin ), so not from a olavecif judgment AT ALL...not to mention coke, ghb, and basically every other hard drug you can think of...except meth (cuz as fucked as I was, I did care about my teeth) point is Heath was who he was so there's no need to sugarcoat it...I'm almost positive he had heroin(if not some type of opiate) and coke in his system when he passed...glossing over or just ignoring that does a disservice to many people...especially young fans who idolized him and probably romanticized that lifestyle....or just simply assume you've have to go that route to become an actor of that caliber...i agree that I don't think the Joker role was responsible for his death at all...in fact I don't believe Heath was trying to kill or even hurt himself...
...Heath had been in the depths of addiction for years at that point...I believe you mentioned blood thinner at some point in your comment and you were correct when you insinuated that may have played a role in his overdose as if you introduce a blood thinner into your system and then take your normal dose just like it was any other day other day it magnifies the effects(which a surprising amount of addicts aren't awarevif) of whatever you're putting in your system...Hell its not that hard to od just by grabbing a few grans of stuff that's stronger than your used to with no blood thinner or anything else in the equation...so, again, I agree way too much was made of this Joker role bringing him to some dark place that caused him to just not give a fuck so he was reckless and od'd...but at the same time let's not pretend this was some medication mixup when the reality is he was a serious addict who for whatever reason(too many options for what possibly went wrong that particular time he decided to use) got unlucky that day...and sadly didn't pull through it...this is the farthest thing from trying to tarnish a man's name after he's passed...as I said I thought Heath was amazing...its just an honest statement about addiction that does much more good in the long run than some sugar-coated version of what went down...
R.I.P Brother
You were a great talent but more importantly a fucking warrior...it takes one to recognize one.
Another fun fact: When the Joker was interacting with Rachel at the party, he went off script and was improvising. So her reaction there was genuine, since she didn’t know what he was doing…
Not only that, but up to that point in the filming of it she had not seen Ledger in his make up. Taken together with his god level performance it had to be pretty frightening.
@@jz55859 Ok, I'm not crazy. I thought I'd read that was Maggie's first time seeing him in the makeup but I wasn't sure.
This movie was such an amazing sequel to Batman Begins, one of the few times that the sequel was actually even better than the original. At the same time, looking back, Heath Ledger's performance was so iconic there was no way a follow up would ever be as good with out him in it. So, for me the next film in the trilogy was just not as good. Anyway, glad to see you guys enjoyed this. You two were entertaining as always.
One of the best parts of the movie is the explosion at the hospital, because some of it was improvised perfectly. When the explosion paused and the Joker started banging the remote and looking confused, that was all improvised by Heath Ledger. The truth is the explosion wasn't supposed to pause, but they had some temporary technical difficulties and Heath stayed in character. Turned out great and created a funny moment. Plus they were lucky, because they only had one shot at blowing up that hospital and thankfully the shot wasn't ruined.
This is simply not true. Both Christopher Nolan and the special effects supervisor Chris Corbould have debunked it many many times. They needed to have 2 rounds of explosions to ensure Ledger had enough time to make it a safe distance away from the building. Ledger messing with the detonator was the signal that he reached the safe zone and the crew could start the second round of explosives. Everything in that scene went exactly according to plan.
“All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day.”
Hands down my favorite Batman ever!!! Glad you guys are doing this Trilogy, Nolan done a fantastic job with all of these Batman films. Ledger was a fantastic Joker who unbelievably got so invested in the roll it was part of a group of things that led to his unfortunate suicide R.I.P. Brilliant reaction as always guys ❤️🇬🇧
Heath Ledger didn't commit suicide. He died from an accidental overdose-poisoning, a lethal combination of painkillers, anti-anxiety medicine and sleeping pills.
couple of fun facts:
heath ledger came up with the make-up for the character after purchasing a small $5-$10 make-up kit from a hallowee store
michael caine didn't know what heath looked like with his make up on and in the scene where joker crashes the party michael caine's reaction and inability to speak was supposedly genuine
Just to be clear, Michael Caine was talking about the first time they _rehearsed_ the scene. The take that was actually filmed and is in the movie was not the first time Caine had seen Ledger in his makeup.
If you pay attention to the build up to the speech by the Joker to Harvey Dent in 36:40.. You can realize that, from the start of the movie to the moment he's explaining his theory on chaos and society as it stood in 2008 when the movie was filmed and released, the story builds up this sense of inconsistency in what will happen next. Gotham is a corrupt city full of "scum" and "dirty" politicians, judges, police, etc. The expectation by the "good" people of Gotham is that the only person who can save them and their city is the Batman. As the movie progresses, it displays that while Bruce (Batman) is trying to hand over the mantle so to speak with his support of Harvey Dent's new era of justice, the Joker represents the desperate attempt by the current status quo to keep things the way they are. In his speech, he references the "schemers" and that our way of life instills a sense of complacency that is tantamount to our expectations getting the best of us as, not only a nation, but as a global society. Essentially, if you pay close attention to the message the character of the Joker in this version of the Batman movies provides... you realize even NOW in 2023... the generalization of the world as we stand today is that our life is controlled by our expectations and for as long as we keep ourselves complacent then we will be providing the basis for our own tragedies and "why?" is what one may ask... It's because, like the Joker stated, "no one minds if things go according to plan"... "even if the plan is horrifying". We are set into this expectation that if police officers are killed, "it's a part of their job".. if soldiers are blown to pieces "that's a part of war".. but if a single civilian is killed in a completely unexpected manner such as a mass murder or a serial killing, all of a sudden we flip out and begin creating a state of panic. We are our own worst enemies and no one, nothing will ever change that until we do it for ourselves.
Every time I watch this one I'm impressed with all of the acting in the scene where the warden hands over the detonator to the prisoner played by Tom Lister. The extreme moral courage of Lister's character is inspiring, as are the performances of the warden and the security guard we see immediately after. A blend of sorrow because of imminent death, relief at having not been the cause of hundreds of others' deaths, and shame that of all of them, only the criminal had the courage to do the moral thing. Fantastic scene.
Which means, of course, that for the most part the Joker was right about the people of Gotham, and Batman was wrong.
I was lucky enough to watch this on opening night in the theaters. One of the best movie experiences ever.
This movie is practically Joker being the main character with Batman as a supporting role lol. Joker is the embodiment of chaos in this movie and it is amazing. One of my favorite portrayals of a childhood favorite villian
Rewatched it a couple times you'll really get to appreciate how incredible the dialogue in this movie
Ah yes, one of the best movies of all time. Thank you for sharing your amazing reactions! Oh, and Batman took the responsibility for Harvey's wrongdoings because he's incredibly hard on himself. He wants to be the perfect, incorruptible hero. That's also why he refuses to kill anyone, even the Joker.
BJ's insight into movies never ceases to amaze me. Where would Asia be without him to explain the subtleties within the movie. Keep up the good work BJ!
Yes, Maggie Gyllenhall was cast as Rachel for this as Katie Holmes had a packed shooting schedule, and actually declined to return despite Nolan wanting her back.
The thing about the Joker's little origin stories he tells is that he makes it up every time, tailoring it to his audience at the time, just to see what kind of reaction they have to it because he gets off on that. He's always said that if he DID have an origin story, he'd prefer it to be multiple choice.
The old man at the fundraiser who tells Joker that they're not intimidated by thugs is none other than Senior Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, who is a HUGE Batman fan. During the Joker's little storytime with Rachel, Maggie had NO idea what Heath was going to do as he kind of ad-libbed that scene with her so when he put his hands on her with the knife she was genuinely frightened.
Heath Ledger also developed the 'licking' tic of Joker's to explain why he was doing it; it was really because the scar prosthetics he was wearing would come loose if they got too dry so he'd be licking them to keep them in place.
Nahh Tommy cruise didn't want her kissing bale
the hospital explosion delay wasn't planned and not part of the script amazing how Heath Ledger improvises
This movie is great and amazing. Batman Begins just has a special place in my heart. It was the first time they took Batman seriously. Although this movie is more epic, I love them equally. There was so many surprises and this movie I felt like a child again. The bat pod and the truck flip blue my mind. Great reaction from you both
Harvey Dent-also known as TWO-FACE> He used a two headed coin to make certain choices. He was a ruthless villian. How did he become that way? Interesting story . . .
1:24 In the DC comics, anybody with super human abilities are called Metahumans. Batman is just a vigilante. But most DC characters fear him because he's super intelligent and has devised ways to neutralize EVERY member of the Justice League should they ever turn against humanity.
If you loved Heath Ledger, you have to watch A Knight's Tale. Great quirky movie with actors that moved on to greater fame. One of my all time favorites. And shout to Down Periscope. just because.
I know it sounds strange, but my favorite part of this movie is when Tom Lister (Deebo) throws the detonator off the boat. I was judgemental of his intentions and it turned out he was the best of them. Someone who made a lot of bad choices in life but was fearlessly ready to meet his own demise to prevent anyone from making a selfish decision.
That was the least realistic part of the whole movie.
@@mrnicktoyou you don’t know a lot about prisoners I assume.
@@NemeanLion- no, I don't know much. Except for the fact that they are most likely murderers who break the law and have no regard for fellow human life.
@@mrnicktoyou then you’ll be surprised that a lot of people aren’t quite who you think.
The air extraction device that Batman used to leave the building was actually used by the US Air Force in the 1960’s -90’s. I learned how to set it up while attending Air Crew Life Support Technical School in 1976. The system was called The Fulton Surface-to-Air Recovery System (STARS). It was in use from 1965-1996 and was also used in several films… James Bond film “Thunderball” and in a John Wayne movie “The Green Berets”. And of course this movie……we were shown how to set it up be never were allowed to „Take the ride“…I‘ve done some pretty out there stuff but getting yanked off the ground by a plane doing probably 200-300mph would not have been my idea of a fun ride! And then hoping that the planes aircrew could reel me in safely……But when your 18 your invincible and will do anything once! After all…Live for the adventure! It may never come your way again. Cheers
Two excellent choices: “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Night”!! Now, to make it complete, throw in my man, Bane, in “The Dark Knight Rises”!! I dressed up as Bane in a couple of NYC ComicCons (shout out to the TH-cam crews who filmed me)… Ok’ boy is no joke!! Great choices… Asia and BJ… you’ve done it again!!!
Hail Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan.
Not only did he know Batman would go after Rachel, but he also knew he would get there before the police.
Heath Ledger deserved his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, even if he did not live to accept it. One of the most original, brilliant, and terrifying performances ever...RIP, Heath Ledger.
First time I ever saw this movie, I was 13 years old and I was TRANSFIXED. I have been a MASSIVE cinephile ever since, and I'm pretty sure so much of it had to do with Christopher Nolan's incredible directing and Heath Ledger's performance. Almost 20 years later, it still gives me chills.
Not shure if it was mentioned, but the semi that flipped was a real live stunt. A giant steam piston pushed it with the exact force, making its landing on the back perfect. Also Nolan is batshit crazy about practical effects, like his parents were killed by computers or something.
This Dark Knight movie is a masterpiece, I went to see at the cinema and at the end everyone stood up gave standing ovation. Heath Ledger was phenomenal as the Joker, God rest his soul.
From the story line, the casting, the plot twist, incredible actions through out the movie...all were well thought and perfectly executed.
Giving his life for the role it seemed.
An award will earned, but the cost of his life to do so it seemed was so heavy. Especially watching it on the faces of all those at the Oscar's as he took home Best Supporting Actor. 💔
I love when Heath Ledger was dressed as a nurse he had the name tag Matilda on. That was his baby daughters name at the time.
I'm so jealous of you being able to watch this movie for the first time lol I wish I could do it again!
Asia and B.J., remember Gabriel in The Patriot? The Joker is the oldest son. Heath Ledger and he won the Oscar for best actor award for this movie posthumously.
Everything in this movie is top tier, 10/10 level shit. I still quote multiple parts of this movie with my buddies to this day.
That Jump scare is always the best part about watching people react to this film 😂😂
The last shot with the speech chokes me up every damn time. Nolan puts some serious unexpected emotion in his films.
Why is it that I feel to need to praise y'all for giving us these videos. Thank y'all
Now, after so many years, I can appreciate this; Harvey's burn scars look amazing when you zoom in on them. I can't even imagine what this movie would look like in 8k in an imax theater (Although I don't know if that is the format used in such a cinema). Nolan always taking care of those little details (yes, his films have mistakes, like any other filmmaker, for example James Cameron or Chaplin, but that is already something universal, errors with the actors, historical accuracy, reflexes, planes that passed in the sky at that moment (gladiator) etc.).
The Joker is such a fascinating villain. In his original appearance back in the 30s he was actually supposed to be a one off villain with Batman offing him at the end. But he was so popular they brought him back and he became Batman’s archenemy, the dark brooding hero against the bright colorful villain. There was a time when Joker was nearly written out of the comics because the Comic Code Authority tied comic writer’s hands with what they could do and so writer’s didn’t like using the Joker, but with the CCA dissolved they brought Joker out of retirement and made him the anarchist we all know and fear.
Just like Batman had several monikers (The Dark Knight, the Caped Crusader, world’s greatest detective, etc.) Joker has several as well, The Harlequin of Hate, The Jester of Genocide, The Ace of Knaves, The Man Who Laughs, and his most famous, The Clown Prince of Crime
Harvey Dent becomes one of Batmans more famous villains, known as Two Face due to the burns he suffered in the explosion. Portrayed also by Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Rises. Val Kilmer plays Batman and Jim Carrey as Riddler. Riddler was brought back in the most recent Batman along w/ other iconic characters such as Penguin and Catwoman.
One of the best movies ever. Hands down. I love the reactions!
