Herzog Zwei was one of those games I discovered completely on accident. My parents bought it for me for Xmas 1990. I didn't ask for it, nor did I ever really hear much about it back in the day. But once I started playing, I was totally hooked. Still one of my favorite early Genesis titles.
1990 the year I bought Genesis and not knowing much I took chances on many of the games like Herzog Zwei, and oh boy was I surprised how awesome it was. Columns “Flash” kept me coming back again and again to this very day. That giant marshmallow boss in Ghostbusters blew me away and I wasn’t prepared for that flipping of the screen in Castle of Illusion, so cool. Good times with my Genesis
Thanks a lot for these videos. I don't know if you have as much knowledge of the Sega CD library as you have of the Genesis, but if you do, a ranking video of Sega and other main publishers would be really cool.
After Burner II looks pretty decent for a Genesis game. It's a scaling, rotating extravaganza in arcades, and the Genesis port was never going to be super accurate, but for 1990, it was good enough. Don't forget that Ghostbusters hack which adds Winston to the cast!
Thanks for taking the time to do the complete Sega collection on the Genesis. I'm really enjoying these videos. Dynamite Duke is a guilty pleasure for me. It looks like Sega rushed it a little when they did the port. Still enjoyable, solid B. ;)
Strider is a solid S as well as Castle of Illusion and Moonwalker. Super Monaco GP is a A in my book and E-Swat deserves a better grade as well. You forgot Dick Tracy and Shadow Dancer, two of the best games of 1990.
Respect giving Herzog Zwei S Tier. First game of its genre and I spent many hours on this one. The first Level soundtrack is one of the best tunes on a game.
I might personally go a little higher or lower on a couple of these, but overall, I feel that this is a really accurate ranking from a player's perspective. Sometimes people get caught up in an online consensus, but I don't think that anyone who actually plays these games could find a real problem with this ranking. Well done!!
Beating Joe and his San Francisco 49ers with the 89 Eagles stats thought would be tough. After googling we were 11 and 5 that year. Best part is the Cowboys were 1 and 15.
The rankings here are pretty close to what my own would be, the only changes I would probably make would be to put Phantasy Star II in S and Sword of Vermilion in A.
I actually agree with giving Phantasy Star II an A. It should have been an S tier game but I was always disappointed by the plain backgrounds during battles when the original Phantasy Star game on the Sega Master System managed proper full-colour backgrounds, some even with limited animation like waves on the beach, during battles. (When I was a teenager, I was also disappointed by the lack of pseudo-3D dungeons but, over three decades later, I realize that changing to overhead maps for dungeons was for the better since it was much too easy to get lost in dungeons in the Master System game.)
Columns seems so flat at first sight, but man when you play it you get hooked, it has something about it some aura, is difficult to describe his charm that teleports you to that era.
I remember paying $99.99 plus tax for Sword Of Vermillion from Kay Bee Toys in 1990. It’s insane what we use to pay for some of these games and people whine today about $69.99 being the new norm. With inflation SOV cost me $232.98 in 1990! 🤦♂️
Back then Strider alone was a big reason to own the system, to most it looked arcade perfect and is a great game. Eswat is also great, I dont know how I would judge it today if it was my first time playing it.
Has anyone played the original Herzog? I think it was on a Japanese computer. Something besides the MSX I believe. I'm sure it's not as good as part 2 (zwei).
I pretty much agree with your ratings. 1990 was actually the year got a Sega Genesis. I had just graduated from high school and sold the moped I used to get to school (was planning to get a car soon anyway,) and used some of the money to buy a Genesis. That was a fun summer.
Hey john! Just inregards to your collab with Metal Jesus recently, there was a 2023 updated release for Ghostbusters on the Genesis where Winston is a playable character. Physical release
The Japanese version of Dynamite Duke has awesome cover art. It's not for everyone but I love this game... can finish in 20 minutes and then try the higher difficulties.
That Alex Kidd is such a mixed bag. There is a hidden dungeon in the first level by jumping on the breakable ground, that was much more fun and challenging way through. The rock paper scissors stuff can be obnoxious though, it makes me think there may be a pattern to it. E Swat I might rate a little higher, I don't mind the sluggish suit, since you have to be deliberate with your rocket movement, and it conveys the weight of the suit. The master system version is quite different some, people prefer that one. Strider has very cool detailed large sprites. It was kind of a spectacle to show off the graphics of the genesis. But it is Arcade difficult, and you may not have as much control as you would expect from another game. Herzog Zwei is also my favorite. I always come back to play it when I'm down. One of the earliest RTS games, but with a player controlled commander, its also got a lot in common with modern moba games like league of legends. Really love the game mechanics here ahead of its time.
Eh, Strider was my fave Genesis game of 1990. After seeing the game in the arcades I was amazed to see a largely accurate port of it on the Sega console. :O
Personnally, I've got different feelings on many games : 1) Truxton : it's not Fire Shark. Same devs though. C 2) Dynamite Duke : not a lot of competition in this genre outside the spritescalers. I consider it as an arcade classic. Coming from the Master System, where you had Operation Wolf by Taito, Dynamite Duke is a step above. Dynamite Duke is upthere in my Top50 with Altered Beast and what not. I play it regularly. For me, it's a B. 3) After Burner II. It's pretty good, but if you have an occasion to grab the 32X port, this one shall be your goto. Because the 32X option is available, I give After Burner II a B mark. 4) E-SWAT, by the Shinobi Team, took a different approach to the arcade game, for the better. They nailed the atmosphere, great colour palette, decent music. The Shinobi style action is there too. It's not an easy game but you get perks as you progress through the levels. C feels a little too harsh on my side. I think many people have played it on the recent compilation. It's a B for me. 5) Moonwalker marked the history of the Mega Drive. Michael Jackson was a huge selling point, before Sonic. It has strengths and liabilities. Strengths : the dancing skills _as a teenager, I loved it ; the music, needless to explain despite the repetition ; the secrets (Mecha Jackson) ; the ending of the game, in a shoot'em uo fashion. I love this final bonus round. Now for the liabilities, the tedious mechanic of opening every door. Michael Jackson's "starlight" (fans will know the reference) stopped shining a long time ago and there are lots of great platformers on the Mega Drive. Michael Jackson's Moonwalker is out of my Top50. Shocking, I know. I give it a C. 6) Phantasy Star II, 100% agree. It took a while for me to get into it. Fortunately the ROM is patched nowadays. If you struggle with Phantasy Star II, hang on to it. It is really worth it. Some of the graphics are very very good, with layers effect. The storyline is fairly basic which is good. Good characters. This instalment relies a lot on dungeon crawling. Grab your pens and papers or your phones. I give it A too. 7) On Strider, I am harsher than John. A lot of Mega Drive games are rooted in the 80s culture and aesthetics. Strider looks like it's out of nowhere. It's a bad Marvel rip off. Some mechanics are interesting, so I won't go as low as D. C for me. 8) Super Monaco GP has one downfall and that is the sequel, Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II. The speed is already here. What is great about Super Monaco is that it rewards the bald. The secret to victory is not to brake in corners. Eat the curbs at full speed. So exhilirating. The Championship mode on the 2 is infinitely better than the awful career mode on the first. Giving a bad car to a rookie feels like double punishment like "No arms, no chocolate". The emormous potential of this tremendous F1 sim bears its fruits in the sequel therefore it's merely a C for the 1990 game and a A star for the 1992 sequel. 9) Sword of Vermilion by Yu Suzuki. I love Yu Suzuki. For me, Yu Suzuki is a genius. Sometimes, geniuses have bad days. As far as I'm aware, Vermilion was his first step into the adventure genre. First, let's talk about the drawing. Look at John's extract and tell me what you think. I think there are underwhelming. Next up, the map that you see, the controls are set up in a way that is conter-intuitive with the rest of the game. Thirdly, the battle sequences may be original but that's the bad kind of originality. Also, having your game cut in different phases like this exposes you to a risk. Look at Y's on the Master System. Everything blends perfectly. Vermilion, not so much, partly because of (four) the change in mood of the music. The dungeon sequences were well negotiated fortunately. There is not much character building but the whole thing is still enjoyable to advance in, thanks to a reasonnable level of difficulty. Vermilion features in my Top50, as a testimony. I give it a C.
I love your ranking videos. Especially when they happen to be on a certain 16-bit console produced by Sega. I may have started gaming in 1986 with the Nes and Master System it was the Genesis that made me the gamer I am today. Having said that... I disagree with you on two things. I think ESWAT was absolutely incredible when it first released. I don't get the sluggish controls, but I do think they're a bit too rigid at times. I would say a solid A. The other is your rating for Ghostbusters. When I think back on how absolutely abysmal all the Ghostbusters games were before the Genesis version, it makes me shutter. The Genesis version was really the only version of Ghostbusters worth playing for years, and for that, I give it an S. Once the fan adaption is added to the zeitgeist, it will likely become an SS. I don't normally go for that kind of thing, but as I already gave it an S... I have nowhere else to go. ;)
Herzog Zwei is one of the best Genesis games ever made. I remember reading EGM back when they reviewed it and they basically trashed it. I took that personally 😂.
I didn't get my own Genesis until about when sonic sonic spinball was out got to play it at a cousins house and played sonic 2 and MK2 and then for Christmas my brothers and sister and I got a model two with sonic spinball with eternal champions NBA jam te I can't remember all the games we got buy but finally got sonic 2 later and altered beast and the lion king toy story um there were a lot of great games on Genesis
Thunderforce III was published by Technosoft in the US. It comes in a red clamshell case and states so on the outside. Two separate databases confirm this as well (rf generation and Sega 16)
I have Columns, know Columns before Tetris I have Buster Douglas' boxing , in fact I had a dream once that Buster Douglas was in Captain America and The Avengers
Alex Kidd is a great game I would give it an "A". You must have thrown your controller in disgust at the he rock paper scissors portion of the game ... and gave up on it... Its really not that bad... Once you have the patience. its a great side scroller adventure game similar to super mario bros. With hidden caverns, special abilities, amazing graphics.
Great video. And I agree about the inconsistency with the alex kidd games. Miracle world was the pinnacle, lost stars was awful......but this megadrive edition, like you I have tried many times but just cannot get into it and give up everytime. Its awful mechanics....make me place this in row F.....just my opinion.
how's it hilarious? the false allegations? And the tabloids giving platform to proven frauds despite Jackson being fully investigated and exonerated? And people making jokes about child abuse they supposedly believe happened? While real abuse survivors get ignored? And real creeps in the music industry (Chilis, Iggy Pop, Steven Tyler, Jimmy Page etc) get to brag and sing about stuff with minors while folk blame the deceased black man. I dunno. As a survivor myself I don't find much funny about it all...
Correct. The only controversy was what was done to him. Nothing that he did. It's crazy how there are still so many people (particularly in tabloids) still trying to push the idea he was a monster when all legal facts and evidence exposed the fraudulent allegations. The guy who started it all, Evan Chandler, about his son Jordan, even admitted to it in his brother's book years later, confirming that he had been begging Jackson for money months before he made up the allegations. Carrie Fisher also talks about Evan in her book Shockaholic because he was her dentist until his creep words about his own son. Also more folk need to watch 'Square One' by Danny Wu which helpfully explains those 1993 allegations and why no accuser ever went to police, but always straight to civil lawyers demanding millions of dollars. Strange how there's no 'controversy' over Prince basically grooming Mayte Garcia when he was 32 and she was just 16. Elvis became fixated with Priscilla when she was 14 but that often gets overlooked (with the recent movie portraying him way more heroic). Or Steven Tyler adopting a teenager, getting her pregnant and forcing her to have an abortion. The description of her in his own book where he talks about her being 'hairless down there' is gross but Aerosmith continues to be seen as non-problematic. Or how about Red Hot Chili Peppers who had a fantastic 2022 despite the group in general being accused of sexual harassment over the years and lead singer Anthony Kiedis bragging in his book Scar Tissue about the 14 yr old he was with. And that the gross Chilis song 'Catholic School Girls Rule' is based on... Or Iggy Pop who starts his 1995 song Lookaway by saying how he slept with Sable (Starr, who was also linked to Bowie and Jagger) when she was just 13... These rock stars openly brag and sing about stuff with minors, but the fully investigated and exonerated deceased black man still gets the blame. It's frustrating as a sexual abuse survivor myself to see Jackson's frauds get seen as 'victims' (when they change their stories every time it fails to win their multiple phoney lawsuits for millions of dollars) but real victims get ignored.
I loved the arcade version of Dynamite Duke, but found the home port pretty lackluster. I may be the odd man out on this take, but I’m not a fan of the arcade Strider, much preferring the more Metroidvania style of the NES game. Run Saber on the SNES is a better Strider than Strider is
Tournament Cyberball 2072 is one of my favorite Arcade games of all time but yeah Genesis port isn’t so great and I wouldn’t be that harsh and give it a C! 🙄
Well, while I appreciate your videos a lot and they have inspired me to play many more awesome games, I think you should stick to that and not imitation. The Micky Mouse imitation was a C from me.
Im glad you gave MJ's moonwalker the grade it deserves, too many people just think of the FALSE aligations against him that there afraid to grade it accurately
Air driver . Shadow dancr. Tchno cup 1990 us rleased. Casltle of illsion and after burner 2 S. After burner 2 bttr than arcade bcouse its slower still fast enough playble. Arcade version too fast to control. Herzog by you and truxton by other yotuber absultly overrated. Like musha. Those Games at best B. These ranking videos are fun. For me, Strider is an S tier as I have lots of nostalgia for the Genesis and Arcade versions.
Golden year of the Sega Genesis 🥲
Lots of great memories there!
Fun fact: Montana was made by the same dev as Madden. They even shared modified versions of the same engine.
Yep knew that but good to post ;)
Great! Love these ranking videos!
I personally love Zoom, it’s a unique game with fun music and relaxing background art, I’d give it an A (or maybe a B+)
I love this channel!
Truxton is one of my all time favorites.
Respect giving Herzog Zwei S Tier. First game of its genre and I spent many hours on this one. The first Level soundtrack is one of the best tunes on a game.
Great Times In The 80s 90s and 00s Good Times Thank You For All Your Work
You are most welcome
Sega was a beast. So many games!
Castle of Illusion is such a classic, thankfully the faithful remake is still alvaible on PSN/XBOX360.
To me Castle of Illusion is an S. It was the Platformer to have before Sonic came along on the Genesis.
Cant wait for the next vid, Toejam & Earl is my favorite game of all time!
8:17 one of the most amazing RPGs ever
Finally beat Alex Kidd after many many attempts. Such a proud accomplishment when i did as the paper, rock, scissors element made it so difficult.
The rankings here are pretty close to what my own would be, the only changes I would probably make would be to put Phantasy Star II in S and Sword of Vermilion in A.

I actually agree with giving Phantasy Star II an A. Solid Video. Good Work.
I remember paying $99.99 plus tax for Sword Of Vermillion from Kay Bee Toys in 1990. It’s insane what we use to pay for some of these games and people whine today about $69.99 being the new norm. With inflation SOV cost me $232.98 in 1990! 🤦♂️
Really enjoying this series John, do you think you will do more, SNES/Saturn etc.
It’s a monumental task to take on Genesis. More hopefully yes
Agreed with all the rankings, except for Strider :-) 10 year old me saw that game and just said "Wow", and hasn't changed since. Great video!
Fair enough!
Back then Strider alone was a big reason to own the system, to most it looked arcade perfect and is a great game. Eswat is also great, I dont know how I would judge it today if it was my first time playing it.
Agreed with Strider, Back then it was the closest to the Arcade experience you could get at home. Should be an S Ranking.
4:18 dynamite Duke was kinda fun back in the day
I agree with your rankings. Cool video John!👉😃👈

Awe c'mon now Buster Douglas Boxing doesn't deserve an F! The button-mashing was a huge part of the fun!

you said it... For me STRIDER is no an S... SS (Double S)... Easily one of my top 3 Genesis games overall.
Super Monaco GP is an "A" for me.
There is no controversy with Michael Jackson. He was found not guilty in court so he’s innocent and awesome!
John did you hear classic game room is coming back? Spread the word!
Great to hear, as that was a great channel!
What happened to these videos? I see they stopped at 1990
Strider = agree, more style than substance
in 1990 most games would be lucky to have either one... Strider was a big deal back then being a super port of a popular arcade game.
Eswat is an A
I loved the arcade version of Dynamite Duke, but found the home port pretty lackluster.
I may be the odd man out on this take, but I’m not a fan of the arcade Strider, much preferring the more Metroidvania style of the NES game.
Run Saber on the SNES is a better Strider than Strider is
Super Monaco GP is a pretty faithful port from the arcade. Sega then made a sequel in Aryton Senna’s SM GP II…yuck.
You forgot shadow dancer!
Game is listed as releasing in 1991. Release dates were kind of fuzzy back the day.
My kids like it haha.
👍👍
Stider is S tier boooo
Meh not for me
Yahwah God bless
Im glad you gave MJ's moonwalker the grade it deserves, too many people just think of the FALSE aligations against him that there afraid to grade it accurately
The allegations are true, and the game sucks.
İ chose bimini run and burning force for jpn 90 similar to after burner style. 1990 eu Md rlase so 89 titles also 90 save the lybary other wise weak list. Before Sonic days.
