  • If you are considering buying a Westie then this is a must see video. Here you will find information about the West Highland White Terrier. Is Westie the right choice for me? The answer to this question is not easy, but if you are looking for a lively dog, full of energy, which, despite its cute appearance, hides a strong character, the answer is yes.
The most characteristic feature of this breed is their perfectly white color, which, combined with dark, almost black eyes and a black nose, creates a completely uncommon effect for any other breed.
The West Highland White Terrier is a typical terrier. High temper, independence, courage, vibrancy and tenacity are the features belong to the Westie.
Grooming dogs of this breed is not extremely demanding, but it should be systematic and carried out in a professional manner. What is more important - it should be done from puppy age, so that Westie gets used to all the grooming activities.
If you want to buy a West Highland White Terrier, in this video you will learn about topics such as: Westie diseases, Westie allergy, Proper nutrition of the West Terrier, Character of the West Highland White Terrier, History of the Westie, west highland white terrier temperament and many other useful information about Westie dogs. Very often Westie allergy can be solved by changing your pet's diet and by eliminating allergenic ingredients from your West Highland White Terrier's diet. I had 2 Westie boys. They were litter brothers. Both were extremely funny and cute, but Oakee was the stubborn one and Fenway was the naughty one! If Oakee didn’t want to do something he wouldn’t, he would turn his back and ignore me. Fenway loved to chase people on bikes, he never went for the person, he just loved the chase, but it could get a bit hair raising when he wouldn’t stop and come back! Fenway died in Sept 2019 aged 12.5 and Oakee died in Oct 2021 aged 14.5 and I miss them both every day ❤️

I adopted a female Westie puppy named Sugar, who is now 9 months old. She is different from other breeds I've owned - adorable looking, totally devoted to me, mischievous, brave, loves mud puddles, and very vocal. She makes unique yodeling and growling noises that make me laugh - she loves to carry on a conversation. I can't imagine life without her - never a dull moment!

My 14yo Westie is starting to show her age (sleeps a lot), but has crazy bursts of energy over her favorite people and critters. She's been known to get in very big trouble when chasing critters (re: knocked over the Christmas tree, wiggled out of her collar and was nearly run over by the garbage truck - all for a squirrel), but thinks that barking at a stink bug will eventually kill it.
She loves kids (half the kids come to our house on Halloween to see her, the heck with the candy), hates baths and brushing, loves to eat (lunch meat, pretzels, chips, pasta), and has her own routine - and will let you know when it's time for cuddles with Daddy or time for food.
Z has brought so much love and laughter to our family and neighborhood. Westies are the besties! ♥️

We have had 2 Westies in the family over the years, the first was male whose name was bigger than he was Ben Terrlach of someplace in Scotland, commonly called Ben. Poor wee dog had no sense of direction. On occasion we had to call a neighbour a few doors down the street and ask to borrow Jasper. He was a Newfoundland type dog, huge but they were great pals. Ben’s girlfriend was also quite a bit bigger than him. We had a fairly good sized boat at the time and the swim grid at the back belonged to Lady, Ben’s girlfriend.Lady’s human parents got my family into boating and most families that had dogs brought them to the marina as they got a break from leashes and being tied up like they had to be in the city. Anyway, Lady being at least part Lab would fish from the swim grid. Ben being Ben figured he could do anything Lady could do. So he would go fishing as well only to end up in the lake. As intelligent as he was, his ego when it came to her was hilarious. Our second one was a female named Jinty after my mum. Jinty is a Scottish derivative of the name Janet which was my mum’s first name. Jinty was definitely Mum’s pup. Neither dog had a mean bone in their body. I have 1 last story about Ben, friends of mine/adopted family had a baby midway through the summer and brought their son over to see my mum and dad for the first time around the holidays. For some reason that was the first time that both my parents were home as my dad travelled substantially for work, both domestically and internationally. One of parents had the baby stuff (blanket, etc.), I think it was the baby’s father and the other one, the mum had wee Charles. Tim spread out the blanket and Judy laid Charles on it. Now one thing you have to know about my family is we were all tall, minimum 5 ft 7 in and we weren’t lightweights either. Ben looked at Charles walked around him with a quizzical look on his face as if he is about to tell us”That’s a people, but, it’s a my size people. They don’t make my size people.” You would have thought Ben was a herding dog as if Charles went to creep off the blanket Ben would herd him back onto the baby blanket. No one, but, Judy could pick him up off the blanket, not Charles’s dad nor Ben’s family. He was quite protective of his baby. He never left the baby’s side. It was really cute, we all laughed. Unfortunately, although I know there are really cute stories that involve Jinty, I can’t think of anything right now. I do know both of them thought they had their navigator credentials as they both had to sit in the front passenger seat with the passenger 😊.

I've had a Westie for two years. She is extremely affectionate and sweet, however also is very stubborn and intelligent- she is wonderful companion still when she sees a rabbit she turns into a werewolf. I can not overstate my recommendation of this breed for a person that wants to spend the time necessary to bond with his/her furbaby. I found your information very valuable valuable and consistent with my dog. Also, my last dog, a Norfolk Terrier passed from Pulmonary Fibrosis and my vet said this breed has a predisposition to this disease as well.

    • @PawAndClaw
      @PawAndClaw  ปีที่แล้ว

The fact is that certain diseases are characteristic of this breed. Westies are stubborn and smart and need a lot of exercise, so when choosing a West Terrier, you need to be aware of the pros and cons of this breed.

@ ginkaas - You are so right. I know a lot of ppl think a Westie is a lap dog because of how they look. No, this is a serious hunter/watchdog in the body of a fluffy cutie. I have owned three Westies and my current Westie is almost 13 years old. He has been in good health and has had none of the Westie bad traits. My Westie named Edison a male has been the most affectionate. My first I later found out came from what I would call a puppy mill. She developed westie jaw, and had horrible allergies. She was loving but when I had her teeth cleaned at 8 years old, she died on the table. My second had been a show dog that developed hip displasia and the breeder spent over $2000 which allowed her to walk again, but not be shown. She died of liver failure at 11 years of age. My current Westie is the love of my life and I have had him since 8 months old. Though he is going on 13 years of age, the vet says he is in excellent condition having gotten shots when needed like all my Westie's along with Vet check ups every year.

Hi. I'm glad your Westie is feeling better. When it comes to allergies, they manifest themselves differently, e.g. skin discoloration, ear and nose problems. Continue treating your doggie with medications prescribed by your vet. Also, try to change something in your Westie's diet. There are special food for dogs with allergies. You have a link in the video description to such food. It's worth a try as this breed often has food allergies. It is worth consulting a doctor if the prescribed medications do not help.

Also should I ( my husband feels like I should) get a second opinion, and if so what should I ask the vet?? I do have some videos and pictures of what I have pulled out of her nostrils... 💁‍♀️💁‍♀️

Of course, the opinion of another vet is also a good idea. You can also ask about food allergies. Also check your doggy's ears for any strange fluid. The most important thing is to thoroughly examine your Westie. I think that the opinion of the second vet will help solve the problem.

Not an easy dog, needed home combing and formal grooming, high energy, a working dog so they need a lot of attention becuz they are party animals and curious., they will take off any time. They love kids and like to play with other dogs.

I think the Westie is a great breed that loves the owner very much. This is a hunting dog, so if you have enough time to walk the West Terrier will be a great companion and pet choice

I've been researching this breed for a while now and most of the literature repeatedly states this is NOT a breed for the first time dog owner.
However, I think this should be taken under consideration. If you're the type of person that can be firm and consistent with training without being cruel (understanding that this can be a stubborn and manipulative dog) and have plenty of enclosed outdoor space for your dog to run around in then I think you have a fair chance.
If you want a dog you can pamper and spoil look elsewhere. The extremely cute face disguises a stubborn and very active individual. And one that isn't suitable to be left alone for the day while you go to work. (If that's your speed I'd suggest a Scottie)

@@susie9893 Yep. They also have to be exercised daily or they will go nuts. That's case with ours anyway. You can't let their cuteness/size fool you, they are very athletic and very much need to be worked and engaged.

And whatever you do, don't let your Westies chew, and eat those styrofoam snowballs like they did several times in this video. They are made with chemicals, and are undigestible, and can make your pup very sick.
