The first version is from 1991 and features Ashton Chiweshe on lead guitar, and the second version is from 2000, with Joshua Dube playing solo guitar. Pure Chimurenga bliss this.
Meaning of song... -you're now old. -you're have forsaken your tradition and culture what are you going to do now that the ancestors are angry? -you have taken the English culture as your own what are you going to do now that the ancestors are angry? -you have taught your children the English culture what are you going to do now that the ancestors are angry? -you've forgotten your relatives back home what are you going to do now that the ancestors are no longer on your side? -what are you going to do now that you're old? - you thought your suffering would end as soon as you leave now that it hasn't what are you going to do ? -

Joshua was the silent assassin and true he was best playing mbira or traditional sound. He did put more of the traditional sound on his guitar playing.
Joshua Dube was so fluid and creative for this type of song. He doesn't repeat his riffs. He glided over that transparent guitar of his. I miss him lots. Ashton was good for a different type of song. He was, at his most basic level, a rock guitarist.
E. E. Mukanya if I remember well Joshua bought that transparent guitar in Japan on a tour I produced and bleed his fingers playing on it but so happy ...
I like the first version much more than the second and that has everything to do with the sound/production. Actually, it is not on the Zim pressing of Hondo, I guess it's only on the international release/cd.
Bro. As Zimbabweans we need to do better to keep records and cultural products like these. I can't believe it's only Ex Rhodesians repressing vinyls of this.
Only the first 10 seconds of this song are worth listening to. I really wish Mukanya has at least one song in which nothing else but hosho and mbira a played. The idea of swamping everything with bass guitars, well, it can be a spoiler.
Chirandu i totally agree the second version the bass is just too much. it annoys me that I have to constantly change bass setting when playing the second song. otherwise the guitar work by Josh is great. you might not notice it on TH-cam but when u download the song and play on music player that's when u notice the bass levels being abnormally high
Who's still here in 2024 ??? Long Live Mkanya we're grateful to have you as a Nation !!

Do you know the lyrics in shona? I can't make out some of the words.
How sad pictures showing depict things that have not changed over so many years, if not gotten worse. Dear Lord.
