  • I finally got around to re-doing this video. I shoot a lot of .223 so am always reloading it, figured this was a good time to record the process with a bit more clarity than my 2014 video. 50 rounds done on the Hornady progressive press.
    I did not cover primer pocket reaming/swaging, I plan to cover that in an upcoming video.

    I should point out that these rounds were for a bolt-action CZ rifle. Usually you wouldn't use those primers for rounds that would go in a semi auto.

      @t.trashbin7062 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which primers would you use in a semi-auto?

    • @High_Caliber
      @High_Caliber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@t.trashbin7062 Hey trashbin! I can only suggest what I use... I use CCI #41 primers in semi autos with floating firing pins, or CCI #400s if I can't get 41's. Lately of course, it's tough to find any primers at all, which is the reason I'm using these here. I only use either CCI or federal primers though, I've had major issues with winchester primers, and if I recall, the S&B primers are very square in profile, so they give me more problems with the primer dispensers. Supposedly I'm getting a case of 400's this weekend, so maybe the latest ammo shortage is starting to ease.
      Oh, and I'm just now doing a video on prepping the brass for .223 (specifically), which will cover trimming, primer pockets and whatnot. "should" be done by tomorrow... Cheers!!

      I'm a VERY big fan of printing or writing out your goals, and pinning them up where you can see them every day. Once your mind "sees" something in writing it tries to work to make it reality. It's an old trick I learned from a Tony Robbins book years ago, when things definitely weren't going my way and I was always short on money. Didn't work overnight, but completely changed my life in the long run. I still do it to this very day. Plus, the best part is it doesn't really cost you a penny (and I'm not selling subscriptions!)... I just want everyone to live the best life they can (although I do sound like an infomercial now lol). Best of luck and very happy you enjoyed it!!! Cheers!

      I learned from my grandfather decades ago, but these days there is the benefit of SO MUCH information, and so many options and tools. In the day, there was just very simple presses, powder scoops, balance scales, and basic reloading journals/bibles. Just watch as much as you can online until the process "makes sense", then just do it. 223 is fairly good in that it is really hard to double-charge cases, but it's incredibly easy to under charge them. Make sure of your powder charge on every cartridge. If you are careful, stay attentive, you can make very reliable rounds. Remember, we all started somewhere :)

      @@High_Caliber Nothing beats learning from Grandpa! Unfortunately, I'm the first in my family to get into guns so I have to learn completely from scratch (and the family thinks I'm some sort of crazed mass shooter now). I'm very thankful for all the veteran reloaders sharing their knowledge with the rest of the world.

      Not much of a worry moving forward, every time I use a "no copyright" song, some east indian company tries to claim ownership and push ads onto the video, so I'll have FAR fewer songs. To be honest, I was using it to hide background noises from the old recording location, the new shop is silent :)

    very entertaining to watch, one question though, do you need to trim your brass every time or can I go 2 or 3 reloads with out trimming? I want to get a progressive press but whats the point if I have to trim my brass between sizing and adding powder.

    • @High_Caliber
      @High_Caliber  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Generally speaking, and in my experience, you only have to reload bottleneck brass once after it has been full-length resized. I run them all quickly through the sizing die just to be sure, but usually once I have resized it and trimmed it, I find they stay in spec for quite a few further reloadings

    I have to say this video was simple no BS or anything... Not even talking lol... just straight to the point. One thing I do have a question is what kind of 3D printer do you have? I like the 223 case you made. Keep up the great videos I am just starting to reload this weekend. First time even doing this so I'm going slow. Taking notes and making sure everything looks good. One more thing all the brass you have is that all mix brass or same brand? I have a lot of mix brass so does it matter when reloading for plinking only?

    • @High_Caliber
      @High_Caliber  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!!
      The printer I have is an anycubic mega S. I put my creations up on thingiverse. www.thingiverse.com/high_caliber/designs
      Brass type is a matter of convenience or preference... for 9mm I grab anything, but for long range rounds I am much more picky. For 45acp I prefer large primer pocket (a real PITA that some manufacturers use small primers for those now). For plinking, you can use anything at all.... honestly I only really try to avoid winchester brass, I've found it to be poor quality, but to be fair, it's not really advertised as reloadable when purchased as factory ammo, so I don't get too grumpy about it. Definitely feel free to ask questions, I don't give a whole lot of detailed info in these, they are more for entertainment, you REALLY should try and find a mentor in your area that can coach you, BUT it's definitely possible to learn yourself...just take your time and don't get sloppy.... a squib load or a triple charged case can make for a really bad day.

    • @Lure-Benson
      @Lure-Benson ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been reloading since 1976 so I have seen every screw up possible in reloading I won't ever do again.
      You never charge a cartridge without checking the powder weight before it goes into the case because powder chargers do slip of clogs happen then the next case that is charged with powder the clog slips adding to much powder to the case.
      Powders used for small cartridges are exceptionally dangerous because they produce very High pressure.
      As for cases NO it doesn't make any difference only to the most hard-core bench shooters does using the same cases matter.
      If you are plinking varmints to targets you won't see any difference from what mix of cases, you are using

    Just a couple things. Clean your brass before you FL size. It's just stupid not to. And, B, the way you use a case gauge is, you drop the case in then invert it and set it on a smooth, flat surface. Whatever sticks out proud gets trimmed. You don't hold the case in with thumb or finger. Comes down to common sense in the end, on both points.

  • @pettergo6897
    @pettergo6897 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you resize and deprime the brass before cleaning?

    • @High_Caliber
      @High_Caliber  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      90% of the time yes. If it's old, dirt filled brass I'll tumble it dry without media, that dislodges the tiny pebbles and dirt, then I shake through a media sifter and then resize/deprime. I broke more than my share of decapping pins in my day on tiny stones before I started doing that. If it's stuff I shot myself and picked up right after shooting, I just take my chances. So far, I haven't damaged a resizing die, but that's always a risk.

      www.thingiverse.com/thing:4878253 I added a stp file, hopefully it'll work. I'll say that a 100 round version of this would take a ton of filament, you might have to get creative with the infil values.

    • @High_Caliber
      @High_Caliber  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure, but something like 15 hours, if you don't count the trial runs :)
