  • Join us on an early morning walk around Cocking and the surrounding area in West Sussex.
Due to its cinematic nature, this video is best watched on a large screen, such as a TV, to fully appreciate the visual detail and immersive aural experience we try to convey.

Cocking is located in the heart of the South Downs, just a couple of miles south of Midhurst.
The day dawned clear and still, though soon became windy which limited our use of the drone on Cocking Hill. Aside from the rowdy jackdaws and crows near the church, we were sadly missing the birdsong that had accompanied us on our walk around nearby Graffham a few days earlier. We were, however, treated to the sights and sounds of Nuthatches (08:27); whilst making much noise, they proved extremely difficult to spot and film.
Much of Cocking village remains in the ownership of the Cowdray Estate - noticeable from the yellow paintwork on the many estate cottages in the village - with some of the older buildings being particularly attractive.
St Catherine's church dates from the C11, although a Saxon church of C7 is believed to have existed on the site. More details of the church may be found here sussexparishch...
A brief history of Cocking may be found here wikishire.co.u...
The walk through Hoe Copse, some of which was directly alongside Costers Brook, was especially tranquil, and we were able to spot a few late insects.

Another lovely walk with some great wildlife shots. It can't have been a particularly cold October morning with all the butterflies around, so that was good!

Thank you for your kind comments, Jim. Autumn, until today has been very warm - frosty and just 2 degrees this morning! Additionally, our walks take a long time to complete due to the filming - backwards and forwards, trying to get the right angles, waiting for wildlife to co-operate etc, and flying the drone, generally means our progress is little more than 1 mile per hour! So whilst we try to set off at sunrise, it is often midday by the time we finish!

Excellent video. It is so restful to watch!
I love the way you show us the wild fauna, small and large.
You get up so early but that early morning light adds to the atmosphere!
Loved the old church- an unusual attribution- St Catherine of Siena. I have never seen that before. We don’t seem to use Italian saints.
A wonderful peaceful place in a world full of warfare. Thanks!

Thank you for your kind comments, Diana; we are pleased you enjoyed watching. We love the early morning light, particularly at this time of year; it makes everything appear warm. Yes, it is an usual dedication for the church although, until 2007, its dedication was unknown.
We have, this morning, completed a lovely walk around Eartham, but really struggled to find much in the way of fauna. Lots of glorious autumnal colours, though!

Now living in the US, however have very fond memories of living in that area. I lived in Graffham for a few years.

Would have enjoyed this more if there had been some commentary. I live on the Hampshire, West Sussex border but don’t know where Cocking is. Where is it in relation to Chichester?😊

Thank you for watching and for your comments. Our videos are more about what we see than us being in front of the camera or narrating, and we are simply not keen on it. Cocking is approx 10 miles north of Chichester on the A286 and 2 miles south of Midhurst. There is some further information in the description. We hope you will try some of our other videos of the beautiful West Sussex downs - sorry, but there is no commentary!
