The Trekker is leather lined so in this case I would use a leather milk or cream. Some use mink oil but I am against it since it is a byproduct of fur-production. I use a light beeswax but I would take the advice from Lowa in this case. Lowa is one of the rare companies that have a very good Care page: lowa.com/tips/care-tips Take a peek ;-).

Hi Marco, Yes it does get in your boots and with a leather inside you can give it a cleaning with a mild damp luke warm rag. Treat the leather afterwards with wax. If you have Gore-tex lined boots just fill them with luke warm water and shake it around and let is sit for a small while. Poor out the water and repeat if needed. Let the shoes dry by air and paper inside to absorb the moisture. Change frequently. I'll do a video on cleaning Gore-tex later ;-). I hope this helps. Cheers, Gijs
Treat anykind of Salt inside or outside a upper-/linning-material like water-/snow-/tannic acid-stains. vinegar-essence:water @ 50:50 and a sponge as used for leather soap. Mountaineering and Heavy Duty Boots should get that Treatment Outside 1x per year as Well. Shoemaker Lowa recommends Patina Leathermilk for leather lining. As Colonil Bamboo Lotion is better for leather and all other material than any Kind of soap, better treat shoes with membrane-tech inside with Colonil Bamboo Lotion. Is also good for leather lining. Apply Colonil Bamboo Lotion with a brush with plant brisles to swipe Out small particles better. The plant brisles must Not be too hard. Ok Denis, they should be waterproof. I was wondering if is where Gore-Tex lined boots hence my question. My tip: take a shallow bowl or bucket, put a layer of water in it and put the shoes in the water and hold them down. The water should be around ankle height. See where the water comes in...

Hi! Great video. How do you clean the inside leather lining of your hiking boots? Mine are pretty darkened by sweat and dust, and I wonder which way is the best to clean and make them look fresh again?
Hi Claus, difficult to answer since some leathers react different. In general just wash them with luke warm water and let them dry without adding heat. Some manufacturers advice to use a special cleaning 'detergent' that also refreshens the 'smell'. What brand and type of boots? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Hi Claus, Sorry for the late reply, had to sort some own 'problems'. Hanwag, just clean like I wrote. Most I learned came from a Hanwag agent and he is a true shoeguru 😉 extra-ordinaire. He is the one who learned me how to take care of boots also the leather lined ones. After drying you can treat the leather with a very light layer beeswax and give it some time to feed the leather otherwise you sox will turn out a bit waxy. Have fun cleaning them! Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Never use bee wax. It clogs up the pores of the shoe doesn't breathe and the wax will attract/form gunk. Even in dress shoes you only apply it to the tip. Instead use a impregnation spay.
Sorry West, You are sort of wrong here. Most people use wax in very thick layers and then you are right. If used in the correct way it feeds the leather and does not clog the pores. Like sunscreen does not block the pores in our skin. Impregnations spray is a safe option for sure. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews It doesn't disappear unless you remove it with acetone each time before you apply a new coat. Like I said, even with dress shoes you apply it only on the toe area because it's gunks up, no matter how little you apply. That's why shoe manufacturers recommend only shoe cream that has oil instead of wax because that reconditions the leather. Wax was used back in the day for waterproofing when there wasn't impregnation spay. Manufacturers advise to use leather cream and then impregnation spray before the cream fully dries out or many manufacturers suggest only using the spray. Lokk it up. Also one more important thing is to not to apply the oil or cream too thick in general because it will soak/clog the membrane and not too close and not to much close to the sole because it will unglue the sole.
Hi West, Thanks again for the feedback! For the articles I write about shoes already for a long time for outdoor magazines and now for my own stuff I contact the experts from shoe brands like Meindl, Lowa, Hanwag etc and apparently they tell me a different story then they tell you. Before shooting the vid I contacted the Grand Master in shoe business over here - Gerard Evers - about this and he just confirmed the beeswax and I have no reason the doubt him. But I do agree on old days versus new days, new methods are good too but also be aware that most manufacturers have their own maintenance stuff or deals with manufacturers so there is a commercial reason too. That said... a lot of those brands have beeswax in the collection and advice it. For (partly) synthetic shoes... that is a different ballgame and also for breathable fabrics. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

Hello. I have lowa waterprofing instead of nikwax because my boots are from that brand. How will the process be ? The one from lowa is sprayed. After applying the spray, do i need to do anything ? Thanks.

Do you put the wax on when the boots are damp or wait until they're dry?
Hi Craig, No, just dry but not bone dry if that is your definition of damp maybe. When damp the wax can sometimes turn white non transparent and not get in the leather fully. Does this help? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Hey, Greate video.
What I am missing here, what is the best way to clean the inside of the boot, as salts from sweat clog up the inside leather.
That was supposed to be a new video... What I do: rinse them with hand warm water, let them dry without adding heat and apply a little wax. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 😄. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Lowa Trekker (Nubuck Leather).
The Trekker is leather lined so in this case I would use a leather milk or cream. Some use mink oil but I am against it since it is a byproduct of fur-production. I use a light beeswax but I would take the advice from Lowa in this case. Lowa is one of the rare companies that have a very good Care page: lowa.com/tips/care-tips Take a peek ;-).
what about the vibram soles? mine get cakes in all the crevices with mud, clay, grass, pebbles. How do you clean?
Hi Ess, There are a lot of different Vibram outsoles. Hard Brush, toothbrush, small screwdriver, sateh sticks, sooking them first... Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Another interesting video 👍🏻. When you sweat in the boots, salt from the sweat gets in the boots. Is it necessary to clean that out?
Not easy to find brushs with suitable plant brisles but i was successful. Mysource i currently Shipping brushs from a Little Bit too hard to extremely hard (good for cleaning the Outsole). So I use my old brushs...from the Same source.

@@marcomiceli1 maybe better answer would be. Why and Not how.
Yes in both cases. Lining of membrane Boots Like Gore-Tex and eVent. And in Case of leather lining.
eVent ist prone of Salt. From inside and Outside. Gore-Tex on toplayer is Same as eVent, Just streched Teflon/PTFE. Gore-Tex is prone to Salt from Outside Like eVent. But the protection by thin layer of PU inside is No solution for Salt. More effective against skin-grease.
Salt Changes the PH-vakue of leather. You shouldclean it with Something to reajust the PH-value askeather got during leather tanning. If Not it will looses it's flexibility. If you try to treat it with too much e.g. Leathermilk you make it soft and fragile.
Finalkaywhat about Sympatex. Sympatex is Like Toray's Dermizax doped PU and Not microporöse, streched Material. All fishermen Boots are Sympatex If they are menbranr-Boots. Sympatex has No Problem with Salt.
Boreal and Stumpp&Baier (Brands: Völkl and Gaston J. Glock) offer Boots with Sympatex. Stumpp&Baier with hydrophobic lining. Works beyond 30°C. Gore-Tex and eVent closes at 25°C.
Great

I just bought a new pair of waterproof hiking boots and after a hike I gave them a wash and after washing I noticed both insides were wet but I never put any water inside them. Should this happen or is this an issue with the boot ?
What is the brand and type of the boot?
@ trespass caelan boots there my first pair. I’m new to hiking so I don’t know much about gear etc
Ok Denis, they should be waterproof. I was wondering if is where Gore-Tex lined boots hence my question. My tip: take a shallow bowl or bucket, put a layer of water in it and put the shoes in the water and hold them down. The water should be around ankle height. See where the water comes in... Make a picture and send them in for warranty. Let me know how this ends please. Cheers, Gijs

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Hi Gijs, thanks for the swift answer. My boots are the Hanwag Lhasa II Wide with a white leather lining.
Conclusion: bee wax for leather
👍
