    I firmly believe that at this point, just the mention of British Rail is enough to give History a PTSD attack.

    Hi HID, good knowledgeable posts. Regarding the Baldwin 210, It was built on spec for the New Haven RR, so part of the design is it had to be able to use overhead electricity on the NH's main line, diesel for the non-electrified part beyond New Haven, and third rail for sharing the New York Central main line into Grand Central Terminals. The tunnels into GCT were electric only, not even diesels were permitted (you could idle a diesel thru the tunnels but propulsion of any train in the tunnels had to be electric). So the design was complex anyway and then the NH went bankrupt shortly after commissioning it, so there was no chance they would buy it in quantity even if it was spectacular.

    In fairness to bullied initially wanting to stick with steam it was because at the time just after ww2 we still had plenty of coal to mine, diesel fuel was expensive to import and the country was broke, so steam was in the short term the gest option

    A couple comments on the preponderance of BR classes--BR decided in the late 1950s to dieselize allatoncerightaway...so every mechanical firm in GB decided they should try and sell diesel locos to BR. BR, being a friendly nationalized company decided, sure, we'll buy some of everything! You'll recall this did not work well when the Pennsy and the New York Central tried it in the late 1940s, and the same problems occurred here: you have many companies attempting to construct diesel locos with no experience at all; and in some cases not even using their own engines or drivetrains. Now it's easy to build a working diesel locomotive, but it's much harder to build one that will reliably survive the rigors of the vibrations and varying loads of active railroading. This tripped up every single BR class you've referenced--all these firms built locomotives, but none of them had any idea how to make them stand up to the rigors of daily railroading. There was a learning curve of, oh, about 15 years...
    And then there's also the stupidity factor--take the Class 41 for example--it was supposed to be the same as the Class 43, but it was built by North British Loco Works instead of Swindon bc of government fiat. Yet the Class 41s had much worse reliability...why? Because it turns out NBL didn't carry the metric conversion out to enough figures for accurate precision, and they were building engines and transmissions based on German Metric designs!!!! That's right up there with Baldwin putting their electrical cabinets on their Centipedes right under the oil filter chamber. You don't suppose that an oil filter chamber might ever leak, do you?

    how do gear trains work
    something on saddle bolier and side tanks (like the big water boxes) tank engines
    double ended diesel trains (and electric)
    eletric trains
    American and European switches other then the British class 07-09
    what to do if the train stalls

    a short video on how a Armstrong turn table works
    what did train flagman do
    what did trains (mostly steam) do when going in tunnels, ive heard of gas masks or just useing a wet cloth, or did they bring in other engines like later on they used electric trains, or were there no bigv tunnels.
    evaluation of electric trains
    why are some trains wagion tops (the stream lining thing to boilers)
    railway terms abd slang
    one on the meaning of flag and lantern colors like green on rear engine means theres another one coming soon,
    the different types of cut offs/reversers/Johnson bar
    some are a big lever, some are a big valve wheel, and ive also seen some that are like rods, one exsample is train sim world 3 and im not sure where to find the other reverser
    and how much water do steam trains take usually, and how much would the crew drink

    Every time you bring up the British diesel locomotives and how crappy they are all that pops into my mind is what Tow- Matter said about British motors; if there's no oil under them then there's no oil in them.

    Who would win in a fight: History In The Dark VS British Railways
    Jokes aside really enjoyed this series. Recognized a few locomotives but this was my first time experincing a lot of them. Really cool seeing history like this! So which one out of all the lists would you consider the absolute WORST?
    Also glad no shade was thrown at The Railway Series/Thomas & Friends. Some railfans DETEST the franchise, so I'm glad your videos don't have anything against it. After all it got me into trains in general.

    How lovely to see the pacer that travels between Blackpool and Colne via Preston. Its a single track from Rosegrove through to Colne, one crossing the train has to stop at a phone box conveniently placed at window height to have the crossing ahead closed to cars. When I had to commute to Lancaster daily from Colne, it was a 1.5 hour trip without the wait at Preston where I would change to either the slow Morecambe train which had to travel behind the Virgin one or if lucky, hop on the Virgin one for 1 stop.
    Yes the train was hourly arriving at end of line Colne. Once upon a time it used to follow through to Skipton, but that line was ripped up like many others.
    I have several memories of standing on the track having a leak because the poor Pacer had broke down, always on the way home and oddly at roughly same place, go figure.
    Not comfortable at all, I suppose was a step up from walking!
    Oh I loved how it shook and rocked and yes as shown, it was quite rough. Those that know the route also will know the Aquaduct at Accrington and the several minutes of screeching due to the tightness of corner and the I guess fixed bogies.

  • @Mariazellerbahn
    @Mariazellerbahn 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    After your dig at the BR Pacer trains being Leyland bus bodies on a two axle chassis, you completely failed to mention that the GM Aerotrain also consisted of GM bus bodies on two axle chassis. Also that there were lots of automobile body pressings on the locomotive that incidentally only put power down through the front bogie (truck).

    I think the Pacer who is a TURD of a DMU doesn't deserve this list..
    Yes it had the passenger comfort of a Fakir bed of nails and was 10% better then a draisine you had to power for yourself.
    As an utilitarian rail transport it worked and kept on running.

    You have to think of Leader as a proof of concerpt, O V Bullied has previous form for thinking outside the box.
    Leader was an attempt to build a loco that could work a medium-sized trainto a tight timetable, work into and out of terminus stations without the need for turning .
    The boiler for its size offered outstanding steam output and offered all welded construction , the six cylinders layout gave outstanding amounts of power it was the sleeve valve gear which crippled them because metallurgy of the time could not hold it all together .
    Had it been a little more conventional with some of its design parameters it could well have been the next step for one branch of loco design.

    1:02:56 The reason why the Areotrain was underpowered is that GM used an EMD SW1200(?) locomotive as the basis for the power car.

    The class 22 were very reliable come the mid 60s till 1972. Glad you pointed that out,take your point about on delivery, but they did come into a world of poor diesel maintenance facilities and steam crews not used to how to maintain them. They were only withdrawn because they were non standard diesel hydraulic,not diesel electric
    BR Class 28 Co Bo was an interesting 2 stroke design,but only one has survived,the one that was used on tribology/ research trains for a while,though after many years is still under restoration

    Question: Why do British locos look so much different from their American counterparts?...thinking of the Pacifics but many others come to mind.

    • @philipdancause7590
      @philipdancause7590 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The loading gauge is immensely different. US locos could be like 3 feet taller and a foot wider than UK locos. That was the biggest contributor. Also, Great Britain never had super-long freight trains, so didn't need gigantically powerful freight locos.

    • @michaelimbesi2314
      @michaelimbesi2314 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      American locomotives could be taller, wider, longer, and heavier than British ones. Additionally, British railways typically had much more passenger traffic and much less freight than American ones, so that affected the designs of locomotives. And Britain was also much, much poorer than America in the postwar era, so British postwar stuff tends to be very ugly because they couldn’t afford to make it look nice. And of course, Britain couldn’t afford to upgrade its railway infrastructure, so British locomotives had to stay short enough to fit into Victorian era stations, roundhouses, and turntables because British Rail couldn’t actually afford to upgrade any of them.
