2022 SPRING CHINOOK FISHING! WILLAMETTE RIVER. Derel shares his method of trolling for springers!

Derel, John and I hit the lower Willamette River, the Multnomah Channel, for Oregon Spring Chinook Salmon. We find success trolling herring using Shortbus Flashers and later try some Hawken Simon 3.5 Spinners. Derel holds nothing back with the information he has learned over the past 2 years.

Thanks! Those fish are bright in the lower system! I’m used to seeing fish way up the McKenzie or Middle Fork Willamette which are dark. I’m hoping the numbers pick up so I can do some backbouncing next month!

Trolling for salmon in my hood. Love it. I am watching fish counts and hope to see you on your home river in a few weeks. Nice fish BTW. Flash, 12 oz weights, Double hooks with herring, Trolling speed. Way different than bank fishing. LOL. We are waiting for fish on my home rivers from the bank.

Thank you! I’m definitely hoping to get ‘back to my roots’ of springer fishing by backbouncing. I’m hopeful, even though the number over the falls have been slow, we saw a bunch of fish caught down there. We’ll be back this week to give it another go! 🎣

Gorgeous fish! My first lower river fish. David and I used to get into them backbouncing the tributaries, but it’s been years. Hopefully we get some good numbers over the falls to give it a go this year.

Beautiful fish! Too bad it had adipositus. I'm 3/3 on springers so far this year on the Willy including my first kayak springer. I like to keep my drag fairly loose as I feel it cuts down on the flopping at the surface come net time. It allows them to turn and run when they want. When they start flopping on the surface seems to be when hooks pop out the most.
