This is a good example of how the designers don't care about the client and only design how THEY want it to look.
Well, everyone knew ahead of time that there was a very high likelihood that they would get something bizarre. It's what you sign up for.
I think sometimes they do intentionally to get a reaction... Hildie had another family who hated yellow and she did the whole room in yellow. Both Hildie and Genevieve laugh they whole time like they don't take it seriously which is annoying
Of Course they don’t Care!! It’s a big Joke to these B--es. If they deliberately ruined my house like that there wouldn’t be No place they could hide. I promise you they wouldn’t think that was funny. 😡
Hildy was notorious for creating disasters and this sort of room is exactly what I expected her to create. A disaster.
@@c.t.p.9821 well it was in my house for several months. It was kinda fun for a while. Plus she was quite nice, like everyone else involved in the show.
"this is why I love Trading Spaces 'cause I can just get an idea and do it!" no one else lets her trash their house lol
I love how scared they look when they're greeting Hildi. They know it's all downhill from there.
Vanessa Vestal yeah she always went too far out.Hay, feathers on a wall. These are l"lived" in spaces. So ridiculous.
Who was that person that put literal sand on the floor? I think that was also Hildi. She also painted her face on someone’s wall. She’s a crazy person and they let her into people’s homes 😭
Oh my God! Your parents' room is one of the first things people talk about when they think of Trading Spaces gone wrong! Thanks for the update. ;) I give them credit for keeping it that long!
these designers are out of their minds
I REALLY liked Genevieve's room. It was probably one of my favourites in the original series.
@@aadams1006 haha i actually like it but that's just me bc hot pink is my favorite color and i love legally blonde and elle woods lol but i can see how not a lot of people would like it
I remember watching this when it was new, and my grandma and mom, both at the same time when they saw them spray paint their couch, “Omg!”
Your mom's candid comment, "Of course, I'm gonna have to move somewhere and change my name." was one of the funniest comments every delivered on that show! Your parents were such good sports. :)
Both designers did a HORRIBLE job. And the circus design is a huge fire hazard. Signed - A Firefighter
Thank you for sharing this - I am so SICK of the grand budgets and beyond DIY stuff they show now - I like these do-able (if you like it) shows and they have more of the families and less of the hosts than the ones today --- so - thanks again for sharing it !!! :)
Hildi, NOOOOOOO!!! 😱😱😱 Both of these rooms are just ghastly. I just couldn't ask guests to take me seriously if I had them over for dinner in that ridiculous indoor circus tent. I'd be peeking behind the panels, half expecting to find Jeanie and Major Nelson frolicking in the corner. Then there's that awful living room that Genevieve did. That wall looks like the rusting hull of the S.S. Sadness. Horrible.
Hi Brian,
Thanks for preserving this dope episode. I can't believe those assholes spray painted your parents' furniture. All the best,
Anonymous Internet TH-cam Video Appreciator
Omg I know! I remember my mom and I were flipping out when we saw that!
OK so the homeowners AND the neighbors both told Hildi that the wife absolutely, positively DID NOT WANT Asian themed decor....and Hildi goes with that exact theme. Why waste your time and $1000 if the homeowner is going to hate the room? And I just wonder if the neighbors were so horrified by the hideous pink furniture that they INTENTIONALLY left it out to ruin so it would have to be replaced.
But yet she went out and bought the exact same color, which the homeowner seem to like oh my gosh😂😂😂😂😂
I used to love this show! I think some of those designers were smokin' something though.
This was always one of my favorite shows. Thank you for downloading all the episodes I’m just on my first one and that definitely look like the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey room. Holy cow and what a fire hazard with all that fabric drape down in the colors. Oh, please spare me, I think if I was them I would go in and just start ripping down all of those curtains😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😢😢😢😢😢😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
It only lasted a couple of months. My parents do still have those couches though.
Did they take everything down themselves or pay someone or did the production company fix it for them?
Thanks for sharing. I was trying to find this. If you changed the title to Circus Tent living room people could find it easier. Thank you for taking the time to put this on Digital format and uploading.
My mom actually hated when people called it that, so I decided not to. But yes, that's how it's gone down in reality TV history.
OMG!! Thank you SO much for uploading this FANTASTIC show!!!!
Thanks very much for saying something besides how awful it was. My parents had a lot of fun.
Ugh. I forgot how much I disliked Hildi. She has never listened to any homeowner, just arrogantly done what she wanted, regardless of anyone's objections. Keep in mind the straw on the walls. I guess your parents kept it as long as they did, just to tell the story! 💐
LOL Those spray-painted sofas. I was so glad when they got destroyed. Then I saw the replacement!
Mocha Latte they didn't get destroyed. They stayed in the garage. My parents had them hauled away later.
Does everyone still love across the street from eachother? Vern was the only designer with elegant touches
Brian, Thank you for the upload. I used to love T.S. Hildi was horrible. I didn't see her Interior Design Company growing.
I remember watching this show with my parents when I was in about third grade. We even had DVDs. I remember my mom saying she had "no interest" in power tools and that she was far more in love with Ty than she ever was with my dad!
@@tessadub Well, he may be that. But he did almost no carpentry. Both my dad and Lenny are just as good at carpentry as he is.
@@brianjtarr He seemed to be in a bad mood. Kept apologizing to Gen for getting snippy.
As someone familiar with the show this was a remake of (UK's Changing Rooms), it really feels like they amped up the drama for this American remake. The fundamentals of the show are still there, but everyone seems to be getting on everyone else's tits constantly lol
I REMEMBER THIS EPISODE...NEVER SPRAY PAINT COUCHES
There are just... no words... you can see in everyone's eyes when the designer just starts going off "oh God... my neighbour is gonna hate me cause I let this happen" good on everyone for keeping it together on camera, the first thing out of my mouth would've been "what the fuck did you do to my living room?!"
“She put your whole room in the doubt pile” lol
Brian, god bless your parents 😂😂 I would have had a fit!
I would take the Asian room way over that fricken circus ring room. 🤦🏻 wow what a disaster.
I secretly hope that the team sneaked out at night and took the tarp off those hideously ugly pink couches as an act of love.
I was thinking the same thing...maybe the husband took the tarps off. I wouldn’t blame him.
But they still got pink couches. I don't get the whole spray painting couches thing. Seems like it would transfer to your clothes and skin even if it's meant furniture. Just seems unnatural.
Kamisa They still got pink couches, but at least they were not painted couches. Like you said, the paint would probably transfer onto clothing etc. Hildi and Doug never cared about any homeowners on the show.
Bethany Horvatin it was totally the husband. "She brought this on herself" wife: "I liked them." Husband "I didn't."
IT'S BEEN 18 YEARS SINCE IVE HEARD THAT OPENING MUSIC
So glad you posted this buddy. Now I can enjoy it anytime I want.
"This is a show of human errors" sums it up nicely 😖
I'm a little over halfway through the video and I have to say this is one of the most chaotic episodes I've ever seen
Your parents were so worried about the Asain theme and giving them a room of what they didn't want. It was really sweet of them.
Thank you for uploading this! My friend and I used to love watching this show in the early 2000's when we were in college. It seemed like such a fun show to sign up for! (If you had a good sense of humor and didn't take the design of your house too seriously.)
That’s the key. People take it way too seriously. Just look at some of the comments. People are still getting mad 20 years later
Oh my God, hubby TOTALLY realized they were left alone -- including the cam crew -- overnight, and snuck out to vandalize the tarps on the furniture!! 😂😂😂 she had duper's delight on her face when they were talking about it, she knew what he'd done!! He was so unamused when he thought she was serious about ruining another set with that paint 😂 at least covers can be removed!
Blonde chick couldn't possibly have a successful career in SERIOUS interior design. She DOES NOT listen to her client at ALL, then actually gaslights them into agreeing with her and won't stop wheedling them until they do 🙄 she pounded them into submission more than the cute carpenter, sheesh! I will say I liked that shelving unit he was hammering together, that was a fun idea.
Oh she would HATE it? well lets do the entire room with it.. lol
I feel like they took the tarps off on purpose so it would ruin the furniture.
I think it was Hildi who glued feathers on the walls one time. It looked awful. Nothing ever topped that one in my eyes.
I remember fake flowers, hay, wine labes and putting sand all over a floor don't remember the feathers but she probably did that to.
Who's cleaning these freaking drapes all over the walls?I hate when they do that.
The birdhouses lol makes me miss the 90s!
2002 actually. But yes, it was a little 90s. I assume you're referring to the birdhouses on the kitchen wall?
If you get Hildi you know it's gonna suck 9 outta 10 times.
I just love this trade space show
I’m honestly amazed that the people on Trading Spaces didn’t later end up on episodes of Fear Thy Neighbor with how often they ended up giving people exactly the thing they didn’t want. Glad your parents seemed pretty chill about the circus room though, since that was a hell of a thing to walk into.
Everyone saying Hildi didn't listen when doing the Asian-themed room... When it was Genevieve who was the designer for that.
I'm convinced the lady who spray painted the sofas, was on drugs.
Lol I use to think they did such a great job... back when I was in elementary school haha. Boi was I young!
My coworkers husband thought Genevieve was beautiful. He saw her at a trade show in the states and asked for an autograph. She said no
Alright, so I just watched the end, and I totally used what Hildi did to your house as inspiration for my vintage circus boudoir themed wedding in 2011. Like, the invitations looked like your livingroom. It was all temporary, though.
That being said, we're traveling musicians/actors and I fire dance and model.
I'd actually friggin pay a lot for that space, but I'm a gothic pixie Portland musician weirdo, and I would never wish that room on my conservative stepmom.
I didn't realise how little say the neighbors had in the designing
Almost none. I’ll tell you the only design input anyone had. After the couches were ruined, the producers decided to get new ones from ikea. They gave Nancy and Lenny a choice of couched, and they picked the most expensive ones on the list.
@@brianjtarr I had a such just like that in my first apartment, it's called a 'Klippan', I think, one of Ikea's lesser (not least) expensive ones. So if it was the most expensive on the list, I wonder which couches were left that were cheaper than that.
I used to watch this all the time I don't think I ever saw Genevieve do a half decent room and Hildi seemed to use the show to do whatever 'she' wanted to do in someone elses home
I can't imagine she'd ever do in her own
Vern Yip really tried to make the home owners happy
They allowed them to go over budget and get those sofas bc they knew that those poor homeowners were getting screwed and wanted one redeeming quality in that room.
MadeleineQ I actually still have one of those couches. It makes for a cool story when someone comes over.
Paige: "You don't have to like them"
Is that not the point of a makeover though, to MAKE something OVER into something you'd like
Hildi, wouldn't it have been easier (and looked a lot better) to just paint the room??! Jesus!
20 years later and suddenly remember that there was no online shopping back then.
Awe I remember sitting on the couch with my big sister and being in awe of some of these rooms. Great memories but I don’t know what the designers were thinking!
@@brianjtarr hahaha. I need more details about how y'all felt about that off camera!
Did your parents and the neighbors hate each other after?
@@brianjtarr That got to be tough if they still live next door to each other.
@@nicoleackerman205 no, Nancy and Lenny moved a few years ago. But it really wasn’t acrimonious.
You know the tent wouldn't be so bad if it was one single neutral color like off white and like silky so it wouldn't gather so much dust- put a chandelier in the middle.. with regular white couches lol
nearly fell off my chair at the painting the sofa scene
my jaw has been opened for this entire video, I have gasped many times. I don't care what year it was these designers are tacky and always make these loud insane rooms and ignore any advice from the people who actually know the owners and just go ahead with their literal circus tent ideas anyway, they have no regard and just pick up and leave after. I hope after the show stopped running no one ever gave them a dime of their own money, because this is just reckless and absolutely tasteless, I am truly horrified.
So the horrendous designers get to leave and they just leave a shit ton of jobs for the neighbours to complete 😂
The concept of Hildi's idea is okay. Three major problems with that curtains all around and the ceiling is #1 the light fixtures right next to fabric, if the fixture gets too hot, it can set the fabric on fire, #2 all that fabric creates a home for creepy crawley 8 legged spiders and other bugs that could invade the home, #3 this the biggy, when those wall and ceiling curtains require cleaning, it will be a pain in the arse to take down wash and put back up unless the homeowners have lots of cash to have a fabric cleaner come in with a steam cleaner and do it right where they are. At least this one room Hildi did isn't as bad as Hildi's cardbaord room, feather room, or upside down room.
The only time Hildi had happy customers.
I like the idea of the rust wall but in a different room. It just didn't go.
I can't believe Hilde spray painted that couch. I remember thinking she was the most outrageous of the designers
I remember this house! Your poor parents! Were they upset? I would’ve been.
Hildi has the worst taste imaginable--and only a moron would spray paint fabric couches with regular paint! Genevieve KNEW they didn't want Asian or orange, so of course that's what she did! I hope that in the new Trading Spaces, their taste has improved, Simply awful.
Are all the hosts on DRUGS? Littrtaly laughing uncontrably when you have homeowners wait for you.. Smiling for no reason, kinda too relaxed for an work enviroment and I can hear them speaking a bit slowly than they normaly would
The tarps did not blow away! Haha the homeowners took them away! They deliberately sabotaged the ugly spray painted sofas 😂😂😂
This is giving me so much energy
The pink room is like it's for swingers
43:28 all those lights & curtains seem like a fire hazard
Definitely a FIRE HAZARD in that Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus room😅😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤
when the show returned this year, I was bummed to see Hildi... don't like her. And this circus room? who would really want that in their home?
The look of concern when hildi told them steam the carpet😂😂😂 priceless...
Just hideous! This is a criminal, and yet this show is still on.
This one had the Obe room and the Circus Tent Room. I honestly think this is that rare episode where we had 2 negative reveals in one show. I'd rather have Hildi than Doug Wilson or Rick Rifle, whos rooms I've always hated.
Is this on VHS?! lol I didn't realize how long ago this was on TV.
Yes, this was on VHS. It was a huge pain to get this into a digital format.
When your only job is a designer for a TV show and you just fail miserably 😂
brian your mom is hilarious
Genevieve: "ok folks! if it's not the orange wall, it's my season 1 MOSS wall!! I have bad taste, ok?!" :p
I guess it's ok to decorate something that looks crap when it isn't your home ....
I remember when this aired! Thanks for sharing!
thanks for sharing!!!😃😃😃
So Brian Tarr.... I am so curious as to how long the room stayed like that. This used to be one of my favorite shows yet never have heard a personal experience from anyone!
Just a couple of months. My mom did not like it at all. She did a good job of pretending for TV though.
This show is unhinged!
Genevieve Gorder is my favourite decorator.
I used to love watching this crummy show.🤣
Brian- thanks for sharing this vid!
They had some Beautiful women on this show. Can't say the same for the finished rooms. HAHAHA. Did your parents get compensation for doing the show? Thanks for this upload.
How do you clean these finishes/surfaces... ??? That tent is a dust magnet...
You don’t clean it. It was never intended for such things. It would have gotten real gross real fast.
You gotta tell me how long this lasted, are there still elements of this?
The room is long gone. One of those couches is still around, with a different slip cover. Dogs are the only ones who regularly sit on it.
Thank you for sharing! :)
the best one on the show Genevieve
Richie S I liked Vern Yip.He kept things clean, and you could add your personal touches later.
Yes he wasn't a complete A-hole like Hildi and Doug. What's the point of changing a room to a hideous design only to have the homeowners have to spend another 3 weeks fixing it?
No way, remember the grass on the walls? Vern Yip was consistently classy and his rooms always looked expensive.
How long did your parents keep the tent up? It's pretty hilarious.
@@brianjtarr in my mind back then, it was sooooooooo cool they had to have loved it forever hahahaha
I remember this episode. It is a prime example why this show was a hit. No one likes the off the wall room makeovers. This was the home improvement version of Pimp My Ride..... before Pimp My Ride. The designers on this show were so fucking terrible..... every. friggin. episode. Even for back then. I watched this show many times when it aired and I don't recall ever liking a single room that was done. The only entertainment value was the end and the reactions of the homeowners feigning they like what was done.
Also...... seeing this makes me feel old as fuck, haha. 2000-2001 doesn't seem THAT long ago. Heavy residual 90s vibe on this episode from the very early 2000s
I used to watch this program just to see the horrible reactions of the homeowners. It was seldom that the finished room was ever liked. Personally, I'd have gone to jail for murder if they'd messed up my house as they did so often on the show.
That was horrid decorating.
This has to be the most uncomfortable episode of a TV show I've ever witnessed. There's so much tension between everyone. It seems like absolutely every participant is miserable and annoyed. This is the true peak of 1990s material-driven misery.
2002, actually.
No for real, they seem so uncomfortable
It was actually the 00's.😁
