At first I didn't get this, she sounds so leisure and not "operatic". Then one day it sudden dawn on me that this is just how singing should be, natural and pure. And I love how laid back she sounds, like she does not need to prove anything or show off any excessive technic.

And this is what she sounded like at age 63, in retirement, with nearly half a century of professional singing behind her! A long, effortless legato, a perfect trill, a warm steady tone, and a sincerely delivered interpretation. How fortunate we are that she chose to take a chance and experiment with this primitive recording device and leave us these priceless relics of her declining powers. Quelle voix! Quel artiste! Maintenant nous savons pourquoi elle était Patti.

Adelina Patti was born in 1843, so at the time of this recording in 1906, she was about 63 years old. Unfortunately, there are no recordings of her singing in her prime. Given the age of the recording and of the singer, we are only hearing a "ghost" of what it must have been like to hear her singing live in her prime. Still, we should be grateful to have these reminders of her great talent.

Mme Patti arriving at New York. Journalist, 'Do you know you make more money than the President of the United States?'. La Patti, 'Let him SING!'.

One of the greatest recordings ever made! I took flowers to her grave in PERE LACHAISE!

Even in this low quality of sound. Her voice is so warm and free. They called her 'Hebe'. The goddess of eternal youth. What a suitable name for this legendary diva!

I came here because I have recently learnt from family that my great grandfather, an undertaker, embalmed her, preparing her body for the journey from south Wales to her final resting place in France.

I love reading the moments of opera lovers. As a person from the dance world I never hear young dancers express enthusiasm or love when they see early dance films. Its usually just derision and dismissal. Im glad that music people of today can love these recording. I also visited her grave in Paris where a fan of hers told me that the opera house in Columbia was built just for her.

Did you know she sang for President Abraham Lincoln in the White House in 1862!! Here we have the priviledge of hearing hearing her some 40 plus years later a perfect example of 19th C vocalism. No such trill has everbeen duplicated!!

Remarkable and so natural... And remember that she was already 63 when this was recorded

It’s adorable how gentle her voice is. KYA SO BEAUTIFUL

  • @christinec.6685

My goodness, that's a pretty great trill for 63! You can hear enough here to see how amazing she was.

When I was younger, I didn't get her. Now she fascinates me!

Eine der größten Sängerinen aller Zeiten.

  • @nicolesingssongs836

Sounds so natural & relaxed, but this aria is taxing when done right (just like the simplest forms in martial arts can make a master sweat more than his students).. And Patti recorded this in her 60s. Wow. How lucky we are to have access to her voice.

Touching melancholia, scaling the abyss (so to speak). A very special artist. Thank you, Zack!

Il registro centrale é magnifico, gli ornamenti formidabili e la capacità di interpretare é sconosciuta ai soprano dei nostri giorni. Inimitabili i suoi trilli a mezza voce.

If you listen to the old recordings, compare them decade after decade and carefully listen up to the modern ones and back to the old ones you slowly start to shape a filter for what the old recorders didn't catch. I would love to be able to hear the old day voices live.
