    As an infp, I feel like specific ideas have literally changed the course of my life. As soon as I begin to feel settled, another idea springs up and unsettles me.

      I relate! I go into an obsessive mode about a particular thing (right now MBTI, for example) and can't really do much else. :-| Then just as soon as I think I can stop obsessing and get something done, another idea/theory/framework/issue pops up and I have to research the hell out of that one. It's not so much the 'mania' that Erik speaks of for ISFP though, this can go on for years or as long as the obsession lasts, and seems part of my FiNe exploration of myself and the world. Then they all sort of integrate within me in some way, as part of my Fi's structure.

      I always get infp as my type, and i always think i am an infp: i relate more to the overall description of infp, but i have isfp's weaknesses. However, recently i am so depressed,and i show both symptoms of isfp and infp. I shut myself from others and i make lists and schedules and start doing workout and exercises.. which is completely strange because i think there is distinct differences between isfp and infp. What do you think about this case? Do you think being surrounded by sensing types changes someone from intuitive to sensing??

      I mean, I am so stupid that I even can't remember how I behave when under stress. I am definitely not good at sports, painting or cooking like ISFPs. I read somewhere (but not sure if it is true) that ISFPs help their friends by giving their belongings( money and so on) and INFPs are more likely to give emotional support and explain that life is not easy to live, etc. But I also don't remember whether I provided emotional support to someone, I feel like I don't help people who are hurt. I am so confused. Can you please share with your experiences?

    • @emmamw8651
      @emmamw8651 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gulnaz Sarenova sorry for taking so long to respond. I think all the ideas about how IXFPs help other people can be helpful to an extent when you want to know your type, but are not necessarily the best way to distinguish. Honestly, I don't spend a lot of time helping other people either and I think the most telling distinctions are the kind of information you tend to be looking for, how you think about your interests, and how you express ideas.
      INFPs and ISFPs can actually have a lot of similar interests (both often like art) or not, depending on the person, but what you want to look for is whether you prefer more abstract or concrete ways of thinking. INFPs are more interested in symbolism, hypothetical situations, or thinking extensively about philosophical questions like why people have morality, whether it is possible to improve society, etc. ISFPs on the other hand are more interested in practical skills and being able to make something useful using known methods. They are more action-oriented than INFPs. ISFPs and INFPs both tend to have strong feelings about right and wrong, but I think ISFPs question their own beliefs less. For example, my ISFP friend is very faithful about her religion, whereas I have always liked the idea of being religious but have never been able to fully believe because I'm always asking questions like "how do we know?"
      Another difference is how they talk. If I and my ISFP friend are saying the same thing, it takes me about three times as long to say it!😂 Intuitives are famous for getting into a lot of complexity that sensors sometimes see as unnecessary. Also, my friend has a much more charismatic style and tends to create a lot of energy in her speaking; she knows which words or phrase to emphasize and naturally entertains people. Whereas I might say something funny but people will have moved on by the time I finish explaining that actually this joke only applies when such-and-such is the case and you shouldn't assume blabla because I said it... but this can reverse when there are specific details to remember because she will actually pay attention to things like names or places that my mind will filter out, often to my inconvenience 🙃
      Anyway, there are lots of online resources to look at as well if you're unsure! Good luck (:

  • @matthewbosma7264

    I think by watching your video I have confirmed that I am an ISFP not an INFP...
    I have been going through an identity crisis for two weeks trying to figure out what type I am. This behaviour matches with how you said ISFPs react to stress. We obsess about the detail of a particular topic until we either give up or we satisfy the desire we were looking for and then move on to something else. I think the fact that ISFPs/INFPs often get confused is actually the fault of confused ISFP's, who yearn for individuality and question themselves more than others.
    Based on my experience, my guess is that for people who are not sure if they are an ISFP or an INFP, and if you are deep-diving MBTI and won't be satisfied until you find out, then you are probably an ISFP.

    Hi Erik, hi everyone.
    I am into MBTI for some months, and one week ago I discovered your great videos. (I studied Psychology in the nineties but I had no contact with Jung, Myer-Briggs or Keirsey).
    I am totally interested in MTBI and Socioniks and I started to "polish" the automatic generated subtitles (English language) in THIS video. [ ISFP vs INFP Personality Type ].
    I am Spaniard and I speak french and German. I have been in contact with English language for 30 years (im 40 y/o) and I must say, it is really difficult sometimes to follow the automatic generated subtitles. I invested 2 hours correcting the words iNFp and iSFp and many other words. But they are not visible yet, because they need to be revised by the community.
    I invite others to do the same. We shouldn't forget that there are millions of people out there, who are not experts in roman (Latin) letters or, like me, in English language.
    I intentionally kept "i" and "p" in lowercase (small letters), because they are much easier to identify, when reading the subtitles fast. Remember than Turkish, for example, they have two different kinds of "i" and for many Arabic, Persian, Chinese .... etc writers, the letter "l" can be an "L" in lowercase or it can even be a "1". I also put TWO spaces before and after iSNp and iNFp to facilitate the reading. Please, don't remove these spaces.
    I allow myself to ask you to hear yourself, Erik, with the automatic subtitles on. You will see crazy words being generated: "ice" "eyes" ( i ) , or "peace", "pits" ( p ). I would ask the community to help to clean up the subtitles. In youtube is easy to contribute.
    Me, as an iNFp I feel motivated to help other people in other cultures, to listen to this. But the different accents and phonetic sounds in English (the most cacophonic language I've ever heard in my life) makes this very difficult. I appreciate and honor your work totally. Thank you for this videos.

    I do spend a lot of time checking how i'm feeling throughout the day, it's automatic. I usually daydream, there's always a strong image, or sound going on in my mind, maybe a memory, if I stay quiet for a moment. As long as i am alone and free, the monologue takes over, it's more visual with a very subtle message behind it, one that is not always very clear to me. Example: Let's say I'm feeling a bit bad in my chest, I can see the image of a dove flying in the sky in my mind, and feel a certain freedom out of it, feel the breeze and the tranquil sensation the blue sky transmits. But just after looking at it more conscientiously, i realize I feel the need to take a walk outside and to give myself more freedom, more space. I then realize this is a response to the bad feelings in my chest. I'm fantasizing about what I particularly don't have at that moment: freedom, peace etc. There's always some sort of message. When i'm understress I tend to overeat, overthink and to hide what I feel. Abusing sensuality for compensation. If I am out on the streets, I am always talking to myself, reflecting on something. It's like i'm looking inside of myself with more attention than what is happening around me. I can take quick looks at things, make quick observations about outside, but the film is always playing in my mind.

It takes me a very long time because I can act differently in certain situations and I can have difficulty understanding myself. I'm in the process with a professional to understand myself better and might bring up this topic. I love self tests but I also get really upset because I dont completely understand myself enough to be precise enough. Even though this makes me mad I also enjoy gaining the knowledge to clarify the gaps. It's addictive lol.

    I would defintely say I'm INFP when being myself and being comfortable. Though, being in a family and friends nearly almost being sensors, I've been raised to behave much more like a sensor. My ISFP-ish behaviour is much more of my official behavoiur, since that's more or less who people expect and want me to be. So in core, I'd say I'm INFP and have always been I guess, but expectations from family, socity and friends have brought me a deep bond to the INFP way of being and living. I think might be rather common, since socity doesn't really value the INFP preferences and way of thinking. I believe many INFP find themselves acting as INSP as they have been raised to do.

      Based on my thoughts, I think ISFP's are more likely to obsess over detail where as an INFP is more likely to move on to a different topic quickly, I think your struggle similar to mine indicates that you are an ISFP, as you want to be a unique individual which is a strong desire for ISFP's, but maybe an ISFP description doesn't satisfy that individual desire because the description of an ISFP is a bit to boring!

Directly happening at the time, directly affecting them at that time. Infp can be quiet but intense all the time. Scratch that surface, we will hide it but the intensity is always there.

So I overthink everything but its not in a ni way, I am not straightforward like an isfp, but when people talk to me about complex things, my brain explodes and I don't know what to say, I can't talk about theories or anything, it just hurts my head, I want one simple answer to problems but I don't mind multiple possibilities, and I tend to change the subjective a lot and jump ideas a lot, I also start things and not finish them like a typical ne user but I don't think I'm infp because I'm not deep enough, I'm also too loud to be an infp. At parties, I am really shy but then suddenly I can become really impulsive and outgoing. With friends, I run around doing parkour and yelling and being super energetic like an exfp. So how the hell can I be Infp if I'm not that deep.
    I don't relate to any Infp and every Infp fictional character is way too quiet and girly which isn't me at all, yes I'm quiet and anxious and paranoid and worry constantly about everything but I also don't like being so silent that I ignore everyone else and just play with a cat, that isn't me. I also am prone to drawing a lot and I notice a lot like a se user so I think I might be Isfp but everyone says I have ne..what the fk..also I don't think I have si because my memory is bad and I don't exactly relate present to past or maybe I do I DONT KNOWWW HELP ME PLEASE

    This an interesting perspective, although I think diving into specific nuances can be confusing for some people. I feel like the difference is pretty clear; ISFPs will gravitate more towards concrete thinking, the material world and more basic philosophy. INFPs are very abstract thinkers, bouncing from topic to topic when conversing and generally interested in more off the wall, obscure things. When sitting with your friends if you find yourself discussing the complexities of life, existential questions, finding metaphors in films/movies/life events and talking about how past situations informed your sense of identity you are definitely an INFP. If those sorts of thinking don’t come as naturally, ISFP is probably your type. I can spot the difference between a sensor and intuitive within minutes of meeting them. INFPs are also more self conscious in general.

    I'm confused abt myself because for as long as i know I'm an infp but then I slowly realize that the description doesn't really vibe with me (?) (also my intuition and sensing is only different by 2%) And i was watching this vid until almost the end with a firm *oh! Maybe I'm an infp after all.* But then the saying of how isfp jumps into this "mania" sort of thing screamed *me*. Like I'm obsessing over this when I should've done something else (running from responsibility). I'm not athletic btw. Can do a little dancing but that's abt it. I love to draw and design it's been a long hobby of mine. But i also love writing. At first i thought that maybe I'm a borderline infp/ isfp but i still want to know the real truth. But then again i also have this firm belief that people couldn't 100% fit in one of this mbti boxes. So yeah sigh

    I feel like for almost that entire video you were mixing up the two personality types. I felt your observations were incredible accurate, but just reversed. I think the biggest thing I noticed that was off was when you were comparing the way both types react to stress and anxiety. My boyfriend is an Isfp, while I'm Infp. I abhor plans and deadlines, and me under stress is no different. Actually, when I'm under stress I become irrational about them. I will become enraged when people push plans onto me. I will openly resent the responsibilities placed on me. I retreat into myself and lash at anyone that tries to pull me out. I also obsess irrationally, unable to break away from my ideas. I am the one that will become fixated on an Idea and suddenly decide with complete conviction that it's the truth. My boyfriend, on the other hand, lives for making plans. He considers the way I live my life chaotic..And when he is stressed it only gets worse. He will become incredibly angry when plans change or something falls through. This difference between us is the biggest roadblock in our relationship by far. I was so amazed when watching this at how right you were and yet how the roles were completely reversed. Did you accidentally mislabel the two? Or is it widely known that this is how these two types actually react to stress? If so, then I may have to seriously rethink my typing...

    • @sapodilla25
      @sapodilla25 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Crystal Brown I am an INFP under stress atm and I thought they sounded reversed too. I am drowning in my own stress and irrational and angry, and I try to find anything to validate my lack of being able to do things. I also go off on tangents and get obsessed about things that aren't related to the stressors (Not necessarily new hobbies, just new interests). I also find any way to push work to later and blow up at anyone reminding me of things.

      When INFPs are stressed, we move into our shadow function, which is (the unhealthy version of) the ENFJ. Under extreme stress, we move into our superego: the ISTP. The unhealthy ENFJ will convince itself that our nemesis is not deserving of anything / deserves everything (bad) it gets. The superego ISTP will move to rid this person from our lives.

      The making your body tired is an ISFP thing, it doesn`t happen all the time, but as they grow older they notice how the physicall tiredness is a positive thing for them. INFPs avoid that at all costs, too much physical activity can make them sick, literally sick. (the trick here is to know if you are healthy or unhealhty right now... an unhealthy ISFP may be going through a phase of non-activity, but that lack of activity is making them sick, whereas to the INFP that would be a healhty thing).

    • @takenby_cj

      @@takenby_cj INFP are not meant to be productive, socionics calls them Dostoyevsky, and the social purpose is, just as for ISFPs, to be the conscience of the other sociotypes- Strenghtening your personal values by imagining how the world could be, keeping your ground when life tries to throw you off, that inner strenght that comes across as weaknes in the physical world is a gift you must share with others, by trying to be just a healthy you. All the healthy INFPs I know do this, just by example, their apparent "passive" demeanor is a reminder to everybody else that there is much more than the present reality... • @ErikThor
      @ErikThor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not exactly, it's negative in the sense that ideas are a stressor or that they are unsettling to the ISFP. If the ISFP can ground the idea or make it realistic or based on external events, that's fine. But when the idea gets them off course...

    • @aquarius1986
      @aquarius1986 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's so interesting. I'm pretty sure my ex was an ISFP. I introduced him to astrology the first week we met and he went on to get a certificate as an astrologer. I really never expected that! I am the one who's been into it for a longer time and more intensively but he actually got certified professionally. And now he doesn't do it at all - he just got into a 'mania' about it. He also had a cooking mania. He had a phase of dressing as a certain person from history everyday. He had a mania about particular bands that I had shared with him. He had a mania about a certain teacher of his. I always loved how he would get into a 'mania' about all *my* INFP interests. LOL Because then we could share it and be geeks together. But watching this video I realize sometimes those things might have taken him off course. Nowadays we are still friends but very different people with different interests, though can still connect beautifully through Fi. He has a much stronger use of Se now and it's very noticeable.
      I never did the same sort of thing as him, meaning, if my partner is into something, I won't get automatically obsessed with that thing. But I do have my own 'manias' such as watching MBTI videos EVERY SINGLE DAY for HOURS for the past 6-7 months. I will sort of investigate and research an issue obsessively and exhaustively (possibly for years) until I get a new idea to obsess about it. All those things feel like part of my FiNe self-exploration process. I also push everyone around me (Te) to also engage with whatever my obsession is. When the obsession passes it becomes part of "who I am" (sort of sinks into my Fi-Si?) but is no longer actively my obsession. I also will research and obsess with my interest of the moment when under stress though, to escape reality and avoid responsibility. But that may just be the INFP tendency to procrastinate in general...then at the very last minute I will pull the Te moves. I need to work on that aspect of myself... >_<
      Great video as always, Erik.

    My type changes with every test I take. Idk, each description of the types sound so intense or cut and dry. Like if you do this you can't be that, or if you say this you're not that. I've been researching for a year and I'm more confused. INFP is the first one I got. Then INFJ, INTJ, ESFP, ESTP, ENTP, ENFP, and now ISFP. I'm not even sure if I'm an introvert or extrovert anymore lol. I asked my best friend since childhood if she thought I was introverted or extroverted and she said "idk you definitely don't make yourself the center of attention, but you're not shy at all and can strike up a conversation with anyone." I agreed, and said I prefer to be alone and quiet, but I'm also a really good people person. Crowds don't make me nervous or drained, actually the opposite when I'm at a concert or sporting event I get really hyped, but I do prefer to be with people one on one instead of groups and I like my me time. And I hate to be interrupted when I'm focusing on something and people want to talk, or doing customer service is annoying, I hope I never have to do it again but again I'm good at it. I was always the first to volunteer to present projects or do stuff for the class in school because idk I just liked to go first. I'm a hard worker, but I'm also lazy af sometimes. Sometimes a neat freak sometimes a slob lol. I'm an award winning manager of 6 years, but it's not my preferred position I just kinda don't want to step down and then have someone else tell me what to do. I'm not athletic, but I'm a little competitive when I play sports and I hate watching sports on tv only in person or actually being in the game even though I suck. I can't dance, but I love music and lyrics. I paint, draw and write for fun. I have my own etsy shop. I'm into meditation even though it's really hard for me to just let thoughts go instead of speed solving the problems that come to mind before I can let them go, I still love the feeling of trying to relax and burning scented candles and love doing yoga. I love spiritual things but I've never felt that I have a spirit guide, guardian angel or loved one that's passed that's with me, I am teaching myself to read tarot and read auras, i studied astrology for many years, i love the idea of witch craft as well lol but don't do any spells. I listen to ghost stories and cryptid sighting stories to fall asleep because they stop me from dreaming, my dreams are vivid and weird they're more like nightmares but seem so real I used to feel like I never got any sleep. I love scary movies more than comedies, and I pretty much can't stand corny chick flicks except Clueless. I'm empathetic but sometimes I just have to turn it off or I'll get consumed and put my life on hold for people trying to make them feel better. I've learned people need to want to help themselves to feel better or its a lost cause. But I really do love giving advice, I have over a thousand best answers on yahoo answers. I've been depressed for long periods of time in life, but it was situational, I'm not depressed over all, I like to be happy and optimistic unless I'm in a bad mood then I can't find the silver lining. I'm ok at math but not a genius or numbers person. If something bores me like mechanical stuff or someone is telling a boring story I mentally check out and can't even control it, yet I can stare at a tree or something more "boring" and be totally focused. I'm married to an ENTP, he is actually my living guardian angel lol my favorite person in the world. He's way louder and and more talkative than me, he loves making friends and conversation with random people. I don't really seek that out now that I'm older but did when I was a kid. I'm not unfriendly now though. My husband also is the only guy I've been with that I felt I can be 100% myself around and he still loves me and is not overwhelmed when I let me out cuz I'm truly intense and emotional but I tame myself in public and that's another reason I always enjoyed being alone so I can just be me without anyone judging or asking me questions about why I think this or why I do that (he does ask, but I'm ok with it since he's my other half, plus he put in the work! It took me a long time to actually be able to communicate the answers without just blowing up out of frustration) He has really helped me learn to communicate my personal feelings, I rarely shared them with anyone so I wasn't used to it and he was really patient. I used to just dump guys rather than bother to try to work out issues, just didn't seem worth the effort but he's so sweet and always has my back and he soothes my soul. He has a huge heart and is also very emotional but he doesn't let himself indulge in the whole array of emotions like I do. Meaning if something makes him feel sad he won't listen to it or watch, like negative feelings are icky to him lol. I on the other hand enjoy music and movies that make me cry as much as I enjoy anything else it's all good. He's really funny and animated and we always make eachother laugh and he also has a curiosity about the world that I find endearing because I don't have many questions about things lol I feel like I know a lot naturally idk how to explain it. He's hyper compared to me but also ok with sitting around much more than I am, he likes to talk about doing things and I like to actually do them so I think of stuff for us to do on the weekends then that gets him going and excited and we make a great team, I also remind him to eat lol. I love animals and they love me. I like the outdoors and nature. I hate the idea of going to space it's so big it scares me but I love the stars and photos of the galaxy. And I also hated when everyone started texting instead of phone calls or dropping by. Like just talk and get it over with instead of dragging out conversations sentence by sentence waiting for a reply or waking up to messages ugh. Also I'm really sentimental and affectionate, but not a cryer in public, behind closed doors I'm a sobber lol. I do have a bad temper but I'm generally sweet. I like buying stuff randomly for my friends and family and actually anyone if I see something they'd like. I hate sharing though lol. And I hate planning big events, I let my sister plan my wedding lol I just picked the venue, decor, and dresses. I hated having to do the seating and invitations and all that stuff. i just wanted a courthouse ceremony and keg party lol but my husband and our parents were like nah and I'm glad because I am actually kinda bougie I just get overwhelmed with planning, I got to wear a big poofy princess dress and My husband looked super handsome (as always) and everyone had a great time. My friends say I give good advice and always know what to say to make them feel better, but I rarely go to them or anyone with my problems. I love giving compliments to people just because I think they should know what's great about them. I like to be good usually but I like to be bad too sometimes Lol. I like to go fast but also take it slow and do one thing at a time, haste makes waste as they say, but I'm good at multitasking too! I feel like parts of each type fit me, but does anyone know what my type really is?

    I think INFP can also obsess over things under stress but more if they're connected to them in some way. For example I know that with this description I'm an INFP but I've been obsessing over my type for a long time and I think that it's not because it's just some topic but because it's deeply related to me and will make me understand who I am (and control myself more). Like I just want to know how to fix myself (Fi-Si loop? + Te grip since I wanted to be more rational and find more "logical" examples why I'm this type over the other)

      I think ISFP/INFP friendships are amazing! I have 2 girl friends I think are ISFPs and I adore them both, both encourage and inspire me a lot (we are all artists). I can learn something from the way they approach life. They are grounded and know themselves well. I had an ISFP ex (I am INFP) and it was my longest and best relationship to this day. We were both quite young though, and he wasn't using his Se to its fullest. So we were kind of a pile of cuddly Fi. hehe He would take my Ne ideas and investigate them deeply with Ni, then we would talk about ideas and creative projects endlessly. Eventually we became like brother and sister and things changed. We're still friends, so it worked out in its own way. I still love him very much and always will. So, I don't know about a longterm romantic relationship or marriage as I think there's some conflict between Se and Ne (I feel I probably held him back from fully exploring his Se out in the world), but friendships I do highly recommend. :) ISFP girl friends get me out of my room/mind and kick my ass to go see/do something interesting. :P

    I'm so confused about my type :( Think I may have been repressing my Se since late childhood cause of peer-pressures - judging cause I didn't like team sports, people assuming I'm a "girly-girl" before learning I like reading too. I think I just wanted people to think I was one of those like, smarter girls because they had a place.
    I'm struggling especially because my creative side doesn't look for the "story" like I know some INFPs do, my art and poetry are more like impressions rather than narratives /plots and I can't help it, I can't make up plots - the muscle just like doesn't exist - and I think with Ne you can easier??
    I also refused to do team sports when I was a kid so I thought I was unsporty and not with very good spatial awareness. But thinking back my favourite things to do were roller skating, swimming, playing tennis, dancing, singing, cooking, colouring. I excelled mostly at colouring because it was affordable. I was never a story teller. I made characters for fun but even then they lacked story next to what my friend's made.
    Now realising with my art - the main thing I do in my spare time, I've been pushing myself too hard to tell a story for years, like I see others do, without just playing around with media which ends up expressing my Fi way better anyway! I can't seem to make creative things with Ne anyhow, and I'm starting to think I may be using a little, terrible, Ni to give myself some sense of direction with my art rather than the Ne I thought I had.
    But am I typing like an Ne user?? Yeah. Could do with some help clearly.
