I remember playing on the record jackets of the Beatles albums I had at the time, and I took three wire coat hangers and intertwined them to make the sound of a half open hi-hat. My Mom had a love for Broadway music, so I listened to West Side Story, the King & I, and many other Broadway soundtracks, also I was introduced to the Folk music of the day like Peter, Paul, and Mary. As I got older I was blown away by Buddy Rich and his big band music, Louie Bellson, and all the great Jazz drummers that I saw on TV. One day I got a new stereo with a record player, radio, and a cassette recorder that came with a cheap mic. Well, I figured out that I could listen to a record through headphones, and play the song while recording it on cassette. This helped me so much, as I was able to compare what I did to the drummer on the record. I continued to listen to radio & used it to listen to as many different kinds of music I could find on the radio at the time. My first song I really learned to play note for note was a Beatles tune off their first or second album. I learned all of them, so I don't remember which was first.
PS When I first heard Chicago I was in awe of what Danny Seraphine did on the drums, I remember hearing their first album and the long track that was done live was a game changer for me. Loved Chicago 100%.
