when every professor or teacher always say that the only good thing in life is successful job but chuck says that the best thing in life is reaching and making a great story of your life...this man is god
Crazy how relative this last part is to the politics of the US right now. I've been saying this is the problem with my generation and the one below for the last few months. Instead of protesting everything, actually put in work towards bettering/changing whatever it may be that you decide needs to bet bettered/and or changed.
But that's exactly what he's saying, that we don't have god, or the state, or the revolution or anything guiding our existence, guiding our every action. I myself think that that's a good thing. Like we are in the crisis phase of something that, if we are strong and wise enough to endure, will result in us human beings living by our own will and our own fundaments.
Chuck is brilliant. There are some things I'd disagree with, but for the most part he's got a better grasp on the evolution of generations than almost anyone.
this video changed my life in the first 2 minutes, i already knew he's highly intelligence by writing fight club but this takes it to a new level, i mean damn what a man
He's bang on. I'm sure this 'meta-narrative' is the difference between not just those who can write quality stories and those who can't, but also those who can write quality stories consistently.
I have just started reading his books-(of course loved movie Fight Club). -editor good job cutting to the cute girl at 1:53. He is fascinating to listen to. I can’t wait to read the stack of his books I have ready.
As much as I like Palahniuk, he can be a bit cryptic and even contradictory at times. He gives a speech about how your story shouldn't necessarily go counter to contemporary culture because it defeats the point. He says you should rise above the concerns of modern life, lest your story be nullified, fair enough. But then how does he explain fight club?
The difference is that you can create a story for the sake of being edgy or you can simply write a book that happens to go against the establishment. What he meant is to not be edgy just for the sake of being edgy, but to try to deliver a meaningful message through your writing
I completely agree, but then he says in this interview to rise above above the concerns of modern life, hence my comment that he can be hypocritical. Don't get me wrong he is a genius, just contradictory at times.
you don't effectively change anything by protesting change things by giving people a more effective way of living their lives you give them the right story you can do this within the current story without reacting to it right now we need a really big meta-narrative story your job is I would say is to come up with a story like that that makes all of the things we worry about so much right now completely beside the point that makes all the problems we have right now completely negligible
He says "chaining yourself to a beaver" as an example of environmental protest, an analogy to environmentalists chaining themselves to the base of trees to protest logging. His suggestion is that rather than protesting the act of, for example, trapping a beaver for its fur; provide them a better alternative than beaver fur to accommodate their needs.
Woah, this goes against everything you assume you should write about. That’s some next level shhhhtuff. I may have to watch it again. I got it, but I didn’t get it.
Speaking to young people is never forlorn. Its ok when at least 1 of them, 10 years later, thinks about what he said and start spreading the message. each one teach one
@FebruaryHeir675 I only commented on this one video. I'm a Palahniuk fan. It was jsuglia who commented everywhere. Jsuglia was just for my own amusement, nothing more. Unfortunately, his ridiculous comments about Palahniuk being the devil of the earth was erased, as you can see.
Is it just me, or does he look sort of high? If he is, how can he make such a great speech that is coherent and without any "Uh, what was I saying, again?"
because brilliant people function within the realm of other humans with a little disorientation, i do the same with microdosing lsd, i see the abstract, i see the nihilistic romantic nature of a mythological way to unity. it is possible. and hes right,
If only they'd have taken his advice and become more grounded. Instead we're grasping at mists and vapors finding meaning in meaninglessness. Absurdity, angst and anger are virtue. A generation chasing imagination.
@jsuglia What's more serious than the truth? That's all he writes about. Sure the story and characters are fake, but the themes behind them are the bare naked truth. No fairy tale happy ending bullshit. Real life. He's sharing his inner most feelings and secrets. Maybe you should just stop pretending to be someone you're not.
I assume you like literature since you commented here, so I'll state he obvious - "Don't judge a book by it's cover". Also, you shouldn't completely dismiss a whole person because of how they are wearing an accessory because that is pretty shallow buddy.
I paused this thing at 4:20 because the leaf blower next door was making so much noise that I could not hear this. Maybe the leaf blower is making more sense.
love chuck but the first two are modern myths. hunter- gatherer societies had/have more leisure time than modern societies. also, measuring a concept like 'education' is ambiguous at best. i'd guess preliterate societies have better oral story telling capabilities.
@jsuglia Good! I'm glad we all have an understanding. Or at least I think we do. Bravo! Best to save yourself from looking like a - I am sorry to say - a hypocrite now, good sir. Only looking out for your well being, understand. Thank you!
Star Trek was a step in the right direction-space colonization. But that isn't enough. A good story will do more than keep the human race alive and thriving in the cosmos. A really good story has to save the human soul. The beginnings of a modern and reasonable formulation of this story was proposed by Nikolai Fyodorov.
@jsuglia You're welcome my fine, cowardly friend who keeps deleting his hypocritical comments ;D I'm glad you also helped me in my endeavor to have fun, with the added bonus of making people realize how much of a schmuck - oh not only me, but you are too. Thank you!
@jsuglia I agree. You're really entitled to your own opinions, especially if you think it's factual. I mean it's really so FUCKING stupid if other people don't respect your opinion about Palahniuk. Isn't that right good sir? It's really foolish to force other people your opinions on them, true? And it's really so unfair other people think you're intellectually stunted just because you have your own free opinions. Therefore I agree on you, good sir, very good! Keep on doing a good job, sir.
everytime I read one of his books, a little part of me dies...and a even bigger one is growing!
This comment is brilliant
That’s gross, pervert;)
They are not that good
@@pinetinav9083 you're not that good
@@pinetinav9083 They're really not. It's basically the same character telling some slightly different version of the same story over and over.

Chuck is so smart everything he says is solid gold fatherly advice
One of the smartest writer ever to me
"What you don't understand, you can make mean anything."
1:50 hat-tip to the camera person who decided that this gorgeous lady deserves to be immortalised in this video.
Watching this in 2020 makes me wonder if this is the story he was talking about; are we in the break?
i just read fight club despite having seen the film various times. I couldn't put it down. Looking forward to getting more of his stuff
this is aging so well
He's not talking about writing a book, shooting a movie. Hes taliking about man's evolutionary transcendence into deity form.
Crazy how relative this last part is to the politics of the US right now. I've been saying this is the problem with my generation and the one below for the last few months. This.
It seems so simple
A decade later no one has come up with that story
how do you know?
the super-hero thing has filled that vacuum, but its not the story he's talking about. Fight Club, in some ways, is that story.

He is a philosopher and he has single handedly made all these important tenants of wisdom to the mainstream.
There once was a story better than all other stories.. It starts just like this.
I believe there are already stories/books like that--that change people's lives forever
In Tyler We Trust

Mr. Durden everything is going according to plan. We look forward to getting you back.

When he talked about a killer video tape I had a full minute thinking he was talking about Infinite Jest
"Finding a better way to serving the need the beaver is serving"... What, like a fleshlight?

i wish i could actually see into his mind you know he has a problem expressing all his thoughts with only words
The audio without the video reminds me of DFW
And they lapped it up. Astonishing.
@Conway79 Maybe he finds being clapped awkward so sitting and just absorbing it feels weirder than doing what everyone else is doing and clapping too
Why don't other authors sounds as nice as Chuck? This guy oozes positivity (lol!) and niceness
Whilst writing the darkest stories ever :)
Someone has already written the kind of story he's talking about; The story is Ishmael by Daniel Quinn.
