I worked in Ghana for 2 odd years and my preventive measures against malaria for the whole family was to mix 100 ml of veg oil to one hundred drops of either aromatherapy oils, eg eucalyptus or lavender oils. Try to buy brown coloured 100 ml sized bottles to store the mixture and to convey in your bags preferably inside a plastic bag to protect against spillages. Immediately after showering in the morning dab your body with a towel gently to keep your body moist to absorb the oil seamlessly. Dab your said oil mixture into your hands and rub them together. Rub whatever part of your body u wish to be protected against malarial bites but be careful so u don't spoil your clothes. Dont use much oil just enough to protect your skin against bites Its best to allow the oil to dry before dressing. If you don't want to risk transferring the oil onto your clothes best to dress first before applying the oil to your face/ear/neck and arms/legs/hands. Apply a little oil to your hair also to fend off all toxic insects. The secret is the scent of the aromatherapy oils that stops the mosquitos from getting too close etc. Apply the aromatherapy oil as and when you feel you need some protection throughout the day especially when outside regardless of the time of day. At nights apply more frequently depending on your surroundings/mood. Good luck as this concoction worked excellently for me and family. We were protected throughout our stay.
Yes you can use oil oil with essential oils for your skin but as a preventive against malarial bites best to use vegetable oils. The scent of olive oil can interfere with the scent of the essential oils. Coconut oil also has a strong smell so can mask the effectiveness of some essential oils against mosquito bites so I would advise using mostly vegetable oils as they all have a neutral scent. You can mix organic coconut oil with a few drops of your skin by rubbing a litte a few drops interfere with the scent

So the last part of my reply, which I decided to revise should have read: mix some organic coconut oil with a few drops of essentials oils and rub on to your skin to keep it supple. NB:,pregnant women should always check with their doctors prior to using certain essential oils so please be careful. If unsure about the uses of certain essential oils the Internet is a great place. Holland and Barretts is a great retailer in the uk to contact.

The bit that made me laugh was right at the end about your clothes drying. Probably because when I travelled to Nigeria, I had the same reaction to how quicky they dried, spreading them out in the sun. In the UK, you need the hand of god to have them dry that quickly outside😂.

When i was living in Ghana 2009-2011 I took daily doxycycline and slept with a mosquito net. I got malaria after about 1.5 years. I took some medication once I got it and it only lasted for 1-2 days. I got pretty weak (instantly) and had a huge headache and stomach issues. I was sweating and felt cold. After 2 days though I was pretty good though. Only malaria once in 2 years. Not bad!
I found this video refreshingly candid and helpful. I plan to make the move to Ghana within the next couple of years and this video will help get buy-in on the prospect from my support network.

I loved this video! You answered so many of my questions and that letter from your son had me tearing up!! My follow up question would be more in-depth about healthcare in Ghana. My partner and I are planning to move to Ghana and once we start a family, I really want my mom to come and live with us. However, my mom has some pretty serious health issues like auto immune disorders etc. If we can pay for the healthcare--can I be confident that my mom could get the care she needs in terms of medication and emergency care?
I would research what her specific condition is and see if there is specialists here. I did a video on one hospital called lucca health but there are others such as nyaho / or contact the health insurance companies like nationwide or one of the others x

There are so many boutiques that sells Zara, Versaci, Nikes Adidas etc. you can get them in Accra TUDU or The Palace Mall Achimota.
Yes my kids go to an international school so don’t have to shave their hair and I will address the clothes one in a video.
