I love this idea. I too will be adding a 4th chain to make it easier to balance. Plus, try out colored gems. But the one idea no one else mentioned is gluing a mirror to the bottom to reflect the light, thus making the lantern brighter.
If you move the two side chains farther away from the one on the end (closer to the opposite side), it should solve the balance issue with three chains.

This is the one! Tina you definitely did it on this one. Ive watched dozens of solar DIYs as an avid hobbiest myself. The materials are pro Dollar Tree so they're not hard to find. I would like to find a square material to make them. Just a personal preference. Then line them up in groups to light up the landscape. If you have deck stairs or banisters these would be really lovely as well as functional. Thanks for your idea. A stand up one.
That's funny, the minute I saw this I too said "This is it!" I also have seen many solar light projects, but this one tops them all... I do want that for my deck and ramp steps 😉
This was a great DIY. I made a pair of lamps using the solar lights, I keep them setting in my dining room bay window and at night they give off good light. I wouldn't change anything about the way you made them. Thanks for sharing.

I was thinking the same thing. You could probably fit 3 or 4 lights on the top, more if you use larger picture frames.
If you want a quick permanent hold that will not fall apart. I would mix EE 6000 with Hot glue. They were great together.

I was happy to find the gems this past weekend. Didn't know I would stumble on this video to use them.
If hanging it you can by an additional chain and use one section to balance out the way it hangs.

You could glue paper shapes on the inside of the cutting mats to add some interest, or even cut some shapes out of the mat.
