Don't forget the other hallmark, an average person gets drawn into a large conspiracy between hidden factions in a morally shifting landscape where good and bad is based off the main characters current veiw which shifts dramatically with each new discovery.
It normally starts with a job offer or random encounter at a low point in life.

I've always loved this movie from the first time I saw this in the theaters. I still have a VHS copy of this movie. The blending of the classic noir films with Steve Martin comedy is pure genius.

Without doubt my favourite Steve Martin film. Like Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein and the Zucker Brothers' Airplane, it proves that the best parodies are always the most affectionate.

Great video! "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" has always been one of my favorites - I come back to it every few years. I like your analysis and the inclusion of films like "Forrest Gump" and "Kung Pao: Into The Fist" as other examples of the art of film integration. "The Three Amigos" is also a film I come back to quite often..."would you say I have a plethora of piñatas?" 🙂

I think "Spellbinder" would be an interesting example of a movie for that period as it uses a white knight instead of a detective type for the primary and uses a different style of baddies while still requiring the exact same inner journey to determine the primaries fate.
Cultists, damsels, work friends, and contacts all play the same parts in the story you would see done by more traditional characters.

WAY underrated movie! I saw it in the theater when I was a kid. I didn't understand it at the time because I wasn't familiar with film noir. Seeing it later in life I think it's a scream! I like to watch it in my payamas! Freshly laundered, of course!

It’s far too intelligent for many modern viewers, it definitely takes some patience and realization of the satire and entendre of genre specific films that contributed to its creation.

And I will be the tall-ish, narrow-waisted-wide-shouilder-ish stranger sauntering up to the bar. Is that a smirk on my face, or are my lips just naturally cruel looking? You are intrigued when you overhear me order a cinnamon vodka ice cream float (it WAS a really hot day). You feel a 'stirring' in several organs the like you have never had...what can you do to prevent the embarrassment of instinct?..... Love your commentary.

The noir esthetic found its way into new wave science fiction and things like cyberpunk which helped influence filmmakers who then made films like Bladerunner.
Though it was the style in storytelling that truly had the greatest influence which stretched well into the 90's rather than visual aesthetic in my opinion.

How do you determine when to pronounce an "R" and when to not??
You say Steve Mah-tin, then seconds later say "idear", actually adding an "R" where there shouldn't be one.
I will never understand the English speaking English.
