I too probably wouldn't know how to respond if someone confessed to me by simply saying "Let's be together!" (我们在一起吧!). That would come across to me as though I am the last resort for that person. Mr. Xu might have gotten a positive response from Jiangyue if he had also added, "I have loved you for a long time now". But I think the truth is simply that there really is no sexual attraction between them.
