What a pleasant surprise! Just picked this up two weeks ago and really enjoyed it! Love all the plug-and-play modules, and as you said, really like how the game gives you the option to play a more interactive or multiplayer solitaire style game!
Great review! This is an amazing game, I have the Master Set and I've certainly gotten my fair share of use out of it! I'm pretty sure I discovered it through your original review. I actually ended up finding a sealed copy in a thrift store 5 or 6 years ago for 20 bucks, which remains to this day my greatest gaming bargain of all time! 😆
@@DriveThruReview seems there was a more ultimate edition called ‘gamefound edition’ that had all 8. In the rule book it shows those 4 extra factions as promos. Did you get them all in one box?
Not all Ultimate versions will come with 8 factions. Frustrating, isn't it? Why they can't just put everything in a box that is supposed to have everything?
Same here. Even the new expansion is already available. Everything fits in the base box, which is smaller than the ultimate one. But being such a good game and so high in my top ten, I am really tempted : (
Your comments on the difference in play style between 51st State and Imperial Settlers echo my own feelings. Imperial Settlers’ highly unique decks are cool, but in practice it becomes more about hoping to draw the key cards in the proper sequence to execute the optimal strategy. 51st State’s shared central deck means reacting to what you draw. One’s deck may rarely be as specialized as one from IS, but it is more interesting to build in play.
I feel like i stumble on this channel every few months and each time i love the approach to your videos. Big fan. How do you feel about the extra factions not being in the retail version? I am quite surprised as they feel like such a huge chunk of content missing. What do you think?
I don't know how someone can possibly don't like the attacking in this game. 2 things, 1 passing grants you immunity from attacks and that puts an emphasis on tempo which is always a good thing for a card game, and 2 when you do get attacked you receive the resource that the razed card produced on its deal side plus a super valuable ruin, so it's never a one way aggression where one side win and the other one simply lose. More often than not the exchange goes in favor of the defender in terms of raw resources because attacking is generally pretty costly in the first place.
i have not played this game but i have played imperial settlers, thinking of just getting the master set, am i missing much by getting the master set vs ultimate edition?
Your original review 7 years ago sealed the deal for me and I bought it after. Love that game! Thanks Joel 🙏🏼

What a steal! :)
We end up playing this quite often because my wife fell in love with it. Always a plus.
Wow 777 reviews. That's quite the milestone Joel!
Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum... Boeing! :D
How do you have 8 faction boards? Mine only has 4.
Not sure? I thought all Ultimates came with 8.

@@shatnershairpiece I did.
There was also a 9th (add-on) Uranopolis-faction in the Gamefound campagne. A free gift for early followers of the campagne 😊

Great game. I didn't go in for the ultimate but have the master set with most of the expansions.

Honestly, I'm not up to speed on what's in the retail version. I assume it's cheaper than this version, so hard to say.
I like this so much more than Imperial settlers.
Inserts are important to the value of a game. Talking about them is not boring (to me).

Some of the better expansions and the better solo mode are missing from the Master Set.
Great review!
Thanks Henri!
