Yeah, no story, just random vilification and grandstanding. It only works on people not familiar with the situation, and since most people aren't, it's effective unfortunately.
Trump probably asked NASA, how much is the salary + insurance cost of an astronaut on a mission to space/ISS, and how much is the cost of feeding/supplying extra 2 people in ISS for months. He probably didn't like the answer, and decide to recall Butch and Suni immediately to save some money.
I've been deployed on a submarine for 6 months. Getting extended 1-2 extra months really sucks. Of course, as a professional, you're going to tough it out. But, they were originally only supposed to be on the ISS for one week and have now been stuck for more than six months. Also, their bodies are negatively impacted by the zero g. The only positive aspect in their situation is the "cool" element of being an astronaut in space (which I imagine has worn off for them) and getting paid really well for it (hopefully). Other than that, their situation is weighing heavy on them, based on my own experience being isolated in a submarine for months at a time and getting extended past the original planned deployment. I hope the best for them, and I hope they are able to recover from the physical toll on their bodies.
I suspect they're not terribly saddened by getting to do what they've trained their whole life for, especially considering one of them was promoted along the way, iirc. Seems like we shouldn't be putting words in their mouths, what have they said?
@@garylcamp Even if they love being an astronaut and being in space, they were supposed to be at the ISS for 1 week. Going from one week to seven plus months is tough on someone, especially with the negative effect of zero-g on their bodies. They are tough, and I'm sure they'll make it through like the highly trained professionals they are, but we should acknowledge how difficult their situation is and give them credit for it. This is a mishap. Maybe we should start having backup plans to return people from space within a week or two of plan A now that we've made it this far with space exploration.
Yes. Imagine being trapped in your room for six months. Even if you had all the books and entertainment you wanted, it would be hard. But no entertainment, no family, no friends. Literally just one coworker up there. Being in space has to be pretty damn cool, but the cool factor almost definitely has long worn out for them

Exactly. I doubt ANYTHING is changing. This is just publicity. Very expected from the president, less from Elon, at least in this way. Outstanding question! It was originally designed for a 10 year mission. Looking forward to its decommissioning, either into the ocean or preferably to a very high earth orbit for future study and possible mining.

Yes and there are many other differences too! Boing sniffs for hydrogen leaks and Biden sniffs kids hair. Boing once was known to go where noone went before and Biden is known to once know to where he went. Boing is hunting for the quality problem with the coking of the heat shields of their planes and Hunter Biden is doing quality coke in the white house. But at least both have one thing in common: They are corrupt to the core and are embazzeling the US tax payers......
The real question is why was Boeing ever awarded the crew rotation contract in the first place? Way back when. Boeing was awarded much more than SpaceX. Huh? Corrupt much?
ULA being a conglomerate of the legacy rocket companies had all of the legacy lobbyists and good will. It's corruption plain and simple. Not necessarily in the original awarding of the contract because SpaceX was somewhat of an unknown quantity at that point, but by 2021 it was crystal clear who should have that contract.
Well now if the contract is given to spacex, even though they're clearly the best choice, it will also be called corruption, because elon and trump are friendly with each other.
Yeah this is the issue, it's actually biden administration's fault that Boeing was left to its own devices. The order might be superfluous but the accusation is essentially correct.
Ellie, that was a very good and well-presented video. Thank you so much for the perspective. Keep up your excellent work. I'm a big fan of space exploration myself and I enjoy what you do
Tim gave a complete and accurate answer. But for non-space enthusiasts, if they saw it at all, you know, TL/DR. 'Stranded' and 'rescue' is all they think (some don't even understand that they're not alone there either, that ISS had a crew before they arrived, and will have one after they do leave). It's not Apollo 13, there's no hurry, no one's at risk by trying to fit them as smoothly as possible into the original crew rotation. And some people are *exploiting* that lack of understanding for political purposes. Simple as that.
President Trump has ordered Elon Musk to personally ride the Dragon and bring back Butch and Suni. Looking forward to seeing the mission. God speed Elon.
The head clown Trump is indeed steering this circus - remember , he has to keep you distracted so that you forget he said he can't do anything about high food and gas prices.
He's gonna lasso them with his umbilical and straddle dragon while yahooing all the way to the ground, which will be his second reenactment from Dr Strangelove in as many weeks.
This has come up in many discussions and has been INCREDIBLY frustrating to me. Butch and Suni are NOT stranded. Their ride home with all of the necessary suits and other supplies and equipment they need is docked at the ISS RIGHT NOW. They are simply finishing the work that they needed to do for the astronauts that gave up their seats. And as much as I enjoy blaming Biden for things, it wasn't him or his administration. The blame lands squarely upon Boeing and NASA. As far as Elon's statement go. He's not lying ... he'll bring them home as soon as he can, in fact he's already more than half done...
Yeah, I think this nails it. There was no urgency about it. Whether or not we feel Butch and Suni are happy about it is kind of irrelevant... it casts an appearance of indifference about our astronauts on the world stage.
Elon said they will demonstrate a Mars landing and return mission next year. Which is absolute fantasy, but it was not a joke, it was for an intended audience which is the 99.9% of the population that knows nothing about spaceflight. Same with the "rescue" comment, it's not a joke it's essentially a political statement with the same audience in mind. When he talks to Ellie and Tim he knows he is speaking to a better informed audience so in those settings he says things that are more sensible.
Love your reporting, TV's loss has been quality space information's gain, keep up the good work (along with the other fine reporters - which you have interviewed as well! TY)
Fact right. NASA, run by the politically appointed NASA administrator decided to fly a broken ship with multiple issues which ended up with even more issues. If you think astronaut safety is not a cabinet level worry you don't know politics. Did you know that important astronauts like Armstrong were never allowed back in space for purely political reasons? Hell, become president or VP and they don't even let you drive cars again on public roads.
Obviously NASA didn't want to send an empty capsule up there just for Suni and Buch because of the cost. But, you know, it's getting close to 10 months in space, which is ridiculous.
@@LeftFlamingoand these signed up for 8 days... With SpaceX Demo-2 Bob&Doug had a variable length but returned about the middle of it (~64 days mission time).
But not really is it? Many people have scheduled stays in the ISS that are longer than that. For example the guy with most days in space was on the ISS in 2020 for 374 days. That was afaik just scheduled like that. Whitson was in the ISS in 2016/17 for ~289 days. Some other russian guy was just up there ~370 days (Nikolai Chub) Valeri Polyakov spent 437 days in space in a row. The guy died age 80, which for both the US and Russia is a decent chunk above the life expectancy. The reason these Astronauts are often there for a relatively short duration nowadays is more that having more people on the ISS for a longer duration (which is clearly possible) is just more expensive since you have to naturally get more food, water and so on up there.
Elon has become a dangerous oligarch whose actions cause confusion and confrontation. That tweet is not surprising at all, it is completely in line with Elon's recent activity.
Yes. The Tweet was written like he's out of touch with what SpaceX agreed to do. If he's upset about the delays, SpaceX would be part of why those delays are happening now. The return was planned for February and the delays to April are likely related to problems caused by SpaceX. It is Boeing's fault that they didn't return last summer. It is SpaceX's fault that they're not returning in February.
They've been up there since June 5th and were initially scheduled to return September of last year. I expect the extra time will not be good for their health.
I think the soul of Elon's comment is about something I have observed myself my whole adult life (I turn 61 this year). We live in a culture that is too tolerant of pretenders in positions of critical responsibility. Need a graceful way to have people shift to positions appropriate for their competency and ability to demonstrate good judgement.
I think Elon's criticism is not about the schedule of the rescue mission. It's about sending them up in the first place. Everyone who paid attention knew Starliner is riddled with problems and should not fly.
well, it's space, there was a mission, they made a decision and it didn't work out the way they had planned...which happens sometimes when we do hard things.
At least not with two humans aboard with all the issues and delays it was experiencing. The 'manned' launch was rushed.....IMO Because Starliner is way behind where they were supposed to be at at this time. NASA and Boeing.....under Nelson....were NOT innovative.
@ It was unnecessary risk. Could have flown without humans, if flying was deemed necessary for some reason. There was no reason to risk human life. Especially with Dragon already in service and working flawlessly.
Sorry you had to put this program out there. You and Tim got it right, "nothing to see here" on this story. Thanks for the "DeleteMe" promo. Glad you have a sponsor. Take care ma'am.
Nothing to see in space news, just rampant dishonesty about space news from some of the most powerful and consequential people literally in control of space activities in the US. It should be a topic in itself, you know, for space news people. The false rhetoric is a much bigger and more important story, because it will continue and in the future is likely to effects on spaceflight. These are not just two random guys.
I'm going with the dry humor team. However it is note worthy that even bad attention is still attention and it keeps SpaceX in the headlines.Congrats on your continued success and growth. You are a much more refined and matured journalist than when you left the newsroom.
I can’t imagine that Suni and Butch being upset that they had to stay longer than planned on the space station, most Astronauts would sell them first born to be able to get a long space flight right , yes they were stranded because of a faulty spacecraft but I don’t think they are terribly sorry about staying there!
Note that radiation exposure is very high compared to on earth. So high an area on earth would be cordoned off if that level was present. Maybe the two astronauts would prefer NOT to be exposed to that radiation longer than they signed up for!
Yes, shocking that politicians play politician with political things. Who could have foreseen this? Bill Nelson the political administrator of NASA who played politics and launched a faulty Boeing craft to the ISS for donations ... er ... brownie points from the contractor? Surely not! This was inconceivable!
I think Trump is being a dick about it, making the narrative all about him personally. Musk is choosing to play along and further loosing his dignity and mind with it, it seems. Musk is not realizing we can see right through him and that he is being played, all this sucking up will cost him his dignity and admirers IMHO
Dry sarcastic humor…here is one thing for the “Space Community” to consider: if you asked 100 random Americans about 2 astronauts stuck on the ISS, what percentage do you think would recall this? My expectation is less than 50% and possibly as low as 25%. Since they’ve been on board the ISS, there have been 2 devastating hurricanes, a very contentious Election, an ongoing immigration crisis and recently (possibly) America’s most expensive and devastating wildfire event. Butch and Suni have, long ago, fallen out of the News cycle. I’m reminded of the old adage that “any publicity is good publicity” ☺️ Thanks Ellie 👋
I agree with everything you have said, but I would add that I believe and think that it is only fair that Boeing should pay time and material costs to SpaceX to build another capsule so that one crew dragon can be on standby at all times incase of emergency. Then eliminate Boeings contract and give dream chaser funding for another option. I know it sucks for Boeing and will put their space program in chapter 13, but sorry Boeing “ it’s the cost of doing business” IMO
The point, I think, is that the Biden admin wouldnt want to do that to Boeing, so thats why they would only allow this plan. In reality, Boeing should have been forced to pay for the immediate re-desgination of dragon capsule and all expenses to get them back, THEN. not now, not 6 months from now.
I think Elon is just saying that they could have made a plan to go get them sooner outside of the rotation. I think that should have been a consideration if it wasn't
i’m sure 100% it was considered. the whole raft of considerations were considered. but the star liner crew are not stranded and not in danger. instead they’re a staffing asset already at the iss. the people we should feel sorry for are the two Crew 9 astronauts who were dropped. but this is a false rage story. probably to distract from the real damage the WH is doing to nasa right now with contracts chaos.
It seems people always ignore the simplest possible explanation: Elon is a liar and lies all the time in political tweets online. When something stupid or incongruous is done, it must be because was just joking, or it was an accident, and never the intention of someone just being a jerk. You know, like the N*zi salute right, he was just "sending out his heart to the crowd", and it's totally accidental he went the next day to speak at the Afd (former neo-nazi party of Germany) convention, and instructed Germans there to "be proud of their culture" and "not let me be diluted into a soup" of multiculturalism. And then did the same thing in Italy. Nah, that's not at all like the "blood and soil" ideology of Nazis who opposed race mixing. I love Starship and Falcon, but at some point, you have to come to the conclusion that the guy behind them is not a good person.
@insightoftheages5571 Let's tell the truth... Elon is lying to help give Trump credit for something he didn't do. NASA went over why they scheduled the return for Crew10. BTW what many people are missing is the costs, if Spacex was to launch a mission just to transport them back, it would cost more than $100 Million.
You really think this wasn't Elon and First Lady Don trying to take credit for something sorted months ago? It's called history revisionism. Get used to it, you'll hear a lot of "alternative facts" over the next 4 years
It is simple in business terms. StarLiner did not return astronauts, so there has been this dance and shuffle of other flights. It is simple: SpaceX sends up an unmanned dragon, gets the stranded people, and charges back to Starliner. Or that's how it works in the rest of the world.
I don't think that SpaceX could have sent up an unmanned Dragon. It's not about the lauch and docking but the return and reentry with Butch and Sunny that have not trained on flying the Dragon.
So, didn't watch the whole video?, where Ellie went through which capsules are where, and quoting Tim (EDA) pointed out there is already a capsule docked to the station for them to return in.
Sunni Williams, on her spacewalk last night, broke the record for most cumulative spacewalk time by a woman in history! Congratulations to her! I think she's happy to still be there.
Good answer, Ellie. I don't understand why "normal" people are either unable or unwilling to grasp the "big picture". You did a good job of 'splaining without needing to man-splain the issues.
they sign up for thats jobs, they knew the risk, its just internet and people freak out, media make bad news for view...... i'm sure as astronot they not complain about their own choice
The point is that SpaceX could have done it in weeks by bumping customer or Starlink launches, and with Presidential approval to "go now, dont wait. Dont worry about the schedule. Well pay for it".
Maybe Musk simply pointed out that no rescue plan was ever made. A rescue would mean an actual effort, not just taking people off am already scheduled flight in 6 month or so.
He wouldn't mention that it would've been a huge further waste of money on top of the expenses already for no benefit, and he said nothing until his leader did. I think the "stranded" astronauts did a spacewalk last night. Sunni Williams became the woman with the most spacewalk time in history. She must be devastated that she's still there.

An option not mentioned. Send that one available, basically ready, existing Dragon up, with the 2 austronauts that were bumped from crew 9, as soon as reasonable, if that is significantly ealier than Crew 10.
Both Trump and Elon will literally say ANYTHING to stay in the headlines. I take it all with a grain of salt until something actually happens. It's sad though that they are both crudely politicizing a non-political situation.
LOL! What’s dark is our country going bankrupt. Trump is not a deficit hawk. He thinks that the price of oil crates inflation. Elon has tried to convince him that it’s spending. Authoritarianism was our last administration. At least 10% of former Democrats voted for Trump and more than half of independents and many more black and hispanic men. BTW, have you been paying attention to what’s going on in Europe? It’s the same thing as in the US. They have far left parties globalist parties ruling, their “conservative” parties have joined the globalists and new nationalist/populist parties are springing up and quickly getting majorities. Just like what happened here. If this is the first that you’ve heard of this, you need new information sources. Elon has not taken a dark path. He’s not changed his views at all. His former Democratic Party has moved way to the left of him. BTW, Freedom of speech is his biggest value.
@ All of the Tech Giants are libertarian in terms of the government. And socially liberal. The authoritarian left moved all of the Tech giants away from the Dems.
My problem with the humor explanation is it makes Trump look dumb. I think it's much more matter-of-fact, the reply Elon made doesn't spell out a change of pace or plan. I think Trump made his post as another distraction from the cluster this first week has been.
@@12pentaborane Trump doesn't need help with that, it's just a way for Trump to stick it to Biden and take credit for something that's already been taken care of. Elon is just towing the line.

No, this is trying to revise history (again) and trying to take credit for something that was sorted months ago. Probably to distract everyone from Fuhrer Musks disgusting salute
I agree. If Biden needed to pay extra specifically to return them, it’d be embarrassing for Boeing. Hence they pretend this was plan all along. Did NASA really send crew up with experimental craft without a plan B? Can’t even ask the Russians! Or the Chinese, Indians, New Zealanders.
I agree. There's also the fact that the Boeing's buck stopped with the Biden administration. It was their appointees that gave Boeing money, theirs that trusted them, theirs that saw the poor show of things and decided to press on.
They haven't been fighting them every step of the way. SpaceX has been bailed out by the federal government twice in its company's history. Besides it's lucrative contracts it has also received numerous grants that add up in the billions of dollars. Nasa and the US military also comprise 80% of spacex's business contracts, so SpaceX would go bankrupt without the government. .
I’m sure the last administration could have made the decision to have SpaceX go get them as soon as possible. Haven’t they sent resupply missions up there since Starliner? And the way the bureaucracy works, they needed to time everything out per their schedule instead of making returning Butch and Suni as soon as possible their main priority. With the pace SoaceX works, you don’t think they were ready to go get them months ago??? No more “Red Tape” I’m sure… Now Butch and Suni are a priority!
And if they are perfectly fine and happy to wait for crew rotation? You forget, they trained for space, they live for space. They really won't mind a few extra weeks
One would think an escape capsule of some sort would always be docked at the spacestation. Maybe they don't want people just leaving due to emotions. I don't know but a means of escape seems logical.
They don't seem to be in immediate danger. Do they receive overtime for that long stay? If some of you know please tell us. I am aware that long exposure to microgravity brings lots of painful and problematic effects.
Trolling is a form of dry humor. It's frustrating that the arguably two most important men in the world feel free to behave this way (the definition of "high crime or misdemeanor" is just "behavior not befitting a high office"), but these are the times we live in.
This assumes they never want to see their families again. Eat a pizza or get their health back. Long term near zero gravity turns the body into limp spaghetti. Any reduction in their stay even a couple months will improve their health and speed their recovery to 1G. It also reduces the stress on keeping the ISS supplied.

I suspect they're not terribly saddened by getting to do what they've trained their whole life for, especially considering one of them was promoted along the way, iirc. Seems like we shouldn't be putting words in their mouths, what have they said?
Big difference between sub and ISS, As stated here astronauts volunteer and love it while some submariners obviously just tolerate it.
Outstanding question! It was originally designed for a 10 year mission. The real question is why was Boeing ever awarded the crew rotation contract in the first place? Way back when. Boeing was awarded much more than SpaceX. Huh? Corrupt much?
It’s the FAA’s fault for even awarding them, but the FAA is federal so naturally of course they’d allow Boeing to continue their negligence.
@suspense_comix3237FAA? No get your agencies right. NASA is behind the commercial crew program.
@suspense_comix3237 Boeing was broke and the kick back was worth it...

Bingo!

It’s clear that Elon himself will now be going to space to get Butch and Suni.
NASA never offered to pay for a seperate rescue trip. Crew 9 and 10 were already scheduled. NASA could have offered to pay for an additional trip.
Yeah, I think this nails it. There was no urgency about it. Whether or not we feel Butch and Suni are happy about it is kind of irrelevant... it casts an appearance of indifference about our astronauts on the world stage.

You know that many missions to the ISS have been in excess of one year, right?
@@LeftFlamingoand these signed up for 8 days...
With SpaceX Demo-2 Bob&Doug had a variable length but returned about the middle of it (~64 days mission time).
But not really is it? Many people have scheduled stays in the ISS that are longer than that. For example the guy with most days in space was on the ISS in 2020 for 374 days. That was afaik just scheduled like that.
Whitson was in the ISS in 2016/17 for ~289 days.
Some other russian guy was just up there ~370 days (Nikolai Chub)
Valeri Polyakov spent 437 days in space in a row.

I can’t imagine that Suni and Butch being upset that they had to stay longer than planned on the space station, most Astronauts would sell them first born to be able to get a long space flight right , yes they were stranded because of a faulty spacecraft but I don’t think they are terribly sorry about staying there!
What if their mailbox is full or no one is picking up their newspapers because they didn’t plan for being away so long?
They might have OTHER things they want to do too...
Note that radiation exposure is very high compared to on earth. So high an area on earth would be cordoned off if that level was present. Maybe the two astronauts would prefer NOT to be exposed to that radiation longer than they signed up for!

Thanks for the clarification.
That sounds completely reasonable

With no ship there no plan till April or May.

You do a great job, Ellie. Thanks!
@@longshot7601 they don't have to be trained. it can launch rendezvous dock depart deorbit reenter without human intervention
So, didn't watch the whole video?, where Ellie went through which capsules are where, and quoting Tim (EDA) pointed out there is already a capsule docked to the station for them to return in.
The “stranded” people have always had a craft there that could bring them back if necessary.

It is elon, probably just dry humor/sarcasm. He knows they can't exactly "speed up" the process of getting them back
Just like the.... wave? Yeah okay...
My problem with the humor explanation is it makes Trump look dumb. I think it's much more matter-of-fact, the reply Elon made doesn't spell out a change of pace or plan. I think Trump made his post as another distraction from the cluster this first week has been.
@Doom2pro Brother if you genuinely think that was even close to a salute then you are genuinely challenged. Mentally.
@@12pentaborane Trump doesn't need help with that, it's just a way for Trump to stick it to Biden and take credit for something that's already been taken care of. Elon is just towing the line.
@@12pentaborane It was just Trump yapping as alwyas
Nicely done video Ellie!!
It's just Elon doing Elon things
Like those silly willy NAZI salutes ?
This shows your reporter skills! 😀💪💪
I hate to make 2 comments, but it really is a credit to your popularity where half your comments are like you, who understand why the crew are still there and questioning Elon's statement. The other half are first time viewers utterly misinformed on anything in human spaceflight. I would suggest to them to watch your videos documenting this event.
We understand why they are there, but was also know that the entire plan was just to save face for Boeing.. and we should have just planned a direct rescue mission months ago.
People dont see the whole picture myself included.
Who knows what is in the works.
Maybe finally sacking Stayliner and/or SLS in which both Boing is a major partner?
So maybe the public must be made aware again what desastrous work Boing did?
As I said we dont know. 😮😮🎉🎉😂😂😂
Sarcasm with a dig at Starliner.
No, this is trying to revise history (again) and trying to take credit for something that was sorted months ago. Probably to distract everyone from Fuhrer Musks disgusting salute

Astronauts are even more fish in an aquarium than we are on earth.
It's symbolic. The US Government is now working with SpaceX instead of fighting them every step of the way.
I agree, on top of the technicality that all of the Boeing debacle had the buck stop with the Biden administration.
Nasa and the US military also comprise 80% of spacex's business contracts, so SpaceX would go bankrupt without the government.
.
OK. Thanks for theupdate Ellie.
NASA putting their scheduling ahead of the mission is how we lost Challenger.
@@2147B or specifically, as explained, Dragon capsules.
I think Butch and Sunny may have replied "Resign" to the federal employee buyout offer. 🤔
They don't seem to be in immediate danger. Do they receive overtime for that long stay? If some of you know please tell us.
I am aware that long exposure to microgravity brings lots of painful and problematic effects.
I think it was dry humor... Great coverage as always and love your channel.
Thanks so much
I felt compelled to at least address it since so many in the space community have addressed it already
Trolling is a form of dry humor.
It's frustrating that the arguably two most important men in the world feel free to behave this way (the definition of "high crime or misdemeanor" is just "behavior not befitting a high office"), but these are the times we live in.
@@michaelmicek when you've got a felon and crook, and the world's richest person running the govt, what do you expect?

Thanks for telling the truth unlike what those leading us have said.
Good evening Miss Ellie 😊
Hello there!🚀
Butch&Sunny are having Fun up there. All good. Peace
It’s not worth millions to bring them home a few months earlier. Astronauts love space and it’s what they signed up for.
