Two doors:
Ask person guarding Hell, "If I asked the other guard what's behind their door, what would they say?" -> Person guarding hell tells lie and says Hell (because the other person is guarding heaven, and would tell the truth) -> This is what's behind their door
Ask person guarding Heaven, "If I asked the other guard what's behind their door, what would they say?" -> Person guarding heaven tells the truth and says Heaven (because the other person is guarding Hell and would lie) -> This is what's behind their door
The part that might have thrown you off during the episode about this was that immediately after Rick explained this all as "what would the OTHER person say", Karl instead just asked "what is behind your door?" and so then both answers were wrong, and there was no further reclarification of the logic.

The real answer to the door question would be "do I want to go to heaven?"
The liar will say no because he knows you'll want to go to heaven but he has to lie, but the truthful one will say yes because they know you will want to go to heaven
I get so angry at this episode when Ricky and Steve call Carl an idiot for the clone question. Carl is absolutely correct. If there were a clone of you that had identical memories, there would be literally no way of knowing if you were the original or the clone.
It wasn't a clone question though, it was a doppelganger.
Karl asked how would he know which one he is, not which one is the original though
It's really not that hard.
A. As long as you remember being in the house before.
B. Cloning cannot replicate non-genetic markings like scars, tattoos, or even if you shaved recently.

@@MandyCaneLane Not here in the US, maybe some upper class beaches have them, but so many places to swim here its mainly just swim at your own risk. Otherwise it would have to be ban most beaches to be able to supply enough of them to watch over people and I don't know who would pay them.

Interesting solution Ricky has to the problem. My answer was just to ask a question that I knew the answer to "Is this either the door to heaven or hell?" If the person answers yes, then it's the door to heaven, and if the person answers no, then it's the door to hell. Also works with "am I me?" or "is 1 + 1 = 2?"

Also!! Ricky's riddle is WRONG. He should include that the question has to relate to which door they're guarding. But he doesn't. So there are INFINITE questions that's can get you the right door. Anything that you know is a fact
Eg.
What is my name? If he says anything other than Mandy it's hell
What's 1+1? Anything other than 2 he's guarding hell
What colour shirt am I wearing?
How old am I?
What's my address?
Etc
But the riddle as it should be - that he question can only relate to which door they're guarding, Ricky's answer is right

Devil: the other guy would say he's guarding hell (lie because the angel would say heaven)
Angel: the other guy would say he's guarding heaven (because he's guarding hell but would lie)
You could argue that hyperrealism is the least creative artform of them all. You don't need any imagination whatsoever, you just draw what you see. Anybody who values creativity in their art would choose something that isn't just a 1:1 representation of the thing the artist was looking at. It doesn't make you think and that's what a lot of people want from art.

That story about the person eating the banana 'art' made me laugh, there have been some similar instances of people accidentally destroying 'art'. There was a cleaner at an Italian gallery who threw away some bits of newspaper, cardboard, and some other trash as she didn't realise it was an art installation. It was allegedly created to make people think about the environment and was worth $15k.

Yeah a doppelgänger is like if you walked down a street and saw someone that looked identical to you but you weren't related.
A clone is just a biological copy of you that would presumably be 'grown' in a laboratory.

When Karl said "How would I know which one I was", I thought that was a clever question. Karl had asked if his doppelgänger had the same thoughts and memories as him, to which Ricky said yes.
So Karl then wondered (given that you wouldn't likely know how long the other Karl had been around for or whatever), that he could begin to question whether he was the copy or the original. Because if both had met up and didn't know where or when the other came from, how would either of them know? Hope that makes some kinda sense. :)
Finally... I totally agree with you about that modern art crap. It's like wine tasting. People pretending to know about things that they really don't.
And I've seen your speed drawing vids. It totally blew me away. You are incredibly talented, and that's understating it. The one you did of Alien was incredible and I need to watch more.
You should do illustrations for the movie industry (Marvel or DC superhero stuff). Send in some work.

And truth be told, at least imo the abilty to draw well is kind of one of those things you are born with. Yes, obviously you can learn and practice at it and become really good anyways, but it will take more tine and effort. But if you do enjoy something, never give up on it! 🤗🤗

With the doors, You should ask the doorman what door the other doorman would say they were guarding, Ricky would say that Steve would say that Steve is guarding Hell because Ricky is lying, on the other hand if You ask Steve what door Ricky would say Ricky was guarding Steve would say that Ricky would say that he is guarding Heaven because he knows Ricky would lie.
The clone is created without human nurturing, that why considered anomaly, imo, Created by science.

I hate disagreeing with Ricky but there are loads of questions Karl could have asked at the doors to heaven and hell. If he asked what colour shirt he was wearing, he'd know if the guy was lying or not.
That's an excellent point, and one that's been bugging me. I was asked this question by my grandfather in the 80s and my recollection of the scenario was subtly different, which I think actually closes this loophole you point out. In the scenario posed to me, the guards weren't standing in front any particular door, so asking a question to identify the liar still needed a second question to correlate this to the right door. The question needed in my scenario was: "Which door would the other guard want me to go through?" and the devil would point to the hell door, and the angel would also point to the hell door. So you'd go through the door they're NOT pointing to. (The assumption, I think somehow phrased into the question, being the devil wants you to go to hell and the angel wants you to go to heaven)
That wording maybe works better. Ricky maybe meant to say it that way, but a certain person with a head like an orange put him off a bit lol

The way Ricky explained it wasn't that great. Basically if you ask either guard "will the other guard say their door is heaven?" The liar will always lie about the honest guard's answer (and say they'd say "no, mine is not heaven"). The honest guard will always tell the truth about the liar's answer (which would be "yes, it is heaven"). Since the liar will never tell the truth that the other guard would say "yes", the liar's answer is always "no". So whichever guard says "the other guard would say "no, my door is hell", is the liar. and whoever says "the other guard would say yes, this is the door to heaven", he is the honest one and guards heaven. Basically the liar with the hell door will always say "no" and the honest one will always say "yes" when asked if the other would say their own door is heaven.

One guard lies honestly, the other guard's honestly lying. One states a truth about a lie, the other states a lie about a truth. So both answers involve a lie, which solves the asymmetric problem with most questions.

I've made a living out of my drawing skills my whole life and I learned early that what I was into was illustration, not art. The "art" world looks down on illustration as having nothing new to say and the Illustrators look down on the artists for being skill-less chancers who don't know how to communicate with ordinary people. The truth (as it often is)is somewhere in the middle, they both have different audiences and both deserve to be served.
I'm confused by the heaven and hell door thing too. I've seen this show many times and still don't understand Ricky's explanation.

Disclaimer, I'm probably making this more long winded than it needs to be to try and make it as clear as possible and so probably making it more confusing in the process haha: You are asking each guard what the other guard will say is behind their door. So the guard who lies will say the other guard will tell you hell is behind their door, because the other guard is truthful and will actually say heaven but you are asking the liar who will tell you he will say the opposite. The correct door to go through when asking this question is the one identified as being hell, because it actually isn't hell, the liar lied. If you picked the truthful guard to ask, they will tell the truth- that the liar will tell you heaven is behind their door even though it isn't. In this case the correct door to choose is ALSO the one identified as being the door to hell as it actually is really the door to heaven. In both cases the answer which is hell turns out to actually be heaven, so the safe solution is to pick the door apparently going to hell regardless of who you ask. Really hope that helps 😅
Karl's right. If they were absolutely identical, they would have the same memories. You'd remember your entire life, but in reality you could have been cloned and given those memories.

There would lifeguards in Rio, but not for you, if your naked, they wont want to risk grabbing hold of the wrong thing.
Art supposed to be creativity plus skill ,but lot of artist do one or the other ,simple creative ideas are the hardest to come up with but also there is those goofs that they think if they nail banana of the wall and put super high prize to that lame idea thats creative ,no thats lazy shenanigans

It’s always annoyed me how badly Ricky explains the answer to the ‘Two Doors’ riddle/conundrum. That shouldn’t have made it from the podcast to the TV show, since it’s so badly explained.

Not being able to tell if you're a clone or the original is one of the main concepts of the movie Infinity Pool. After the cloning operation, you wake up feeling exhausted and confused and they simply tell you that you're the original, but there's no proof and no guarantee. The original doesn't "just know" because the clone is 100% identical and they also "just know". That's kinda the point of a perfect clone, they have exactly the same memory of turning up at the location and agreeing to be cloned as you do.
Yup, it only works if you wake up in the same place and nobody's there to tell you if you're the original or not.
Yeah, it's weird how nobody else got that. It's common sense Lots of Carl's ideas makes sense, but everybody writes him off.
I think it’s because he phrased it as “how do I know I’m me,” and Steve and Ricky clung to the formal absurdity of that statement instead of listening from his explanation that the “me” refers to “the real Karl that I think I am.”

@@balder9033 That's because he wasn't told that he would lose consciousness at any stage, that was never said, just that a clone shows up. The fact that he has experience and no loss of consciousness means he should be in no doubt he is the original, if he starts doubting that he is an idiot.

@@JohnnyJohnny-f5o It would all depend on how the clone was created. If you were knocked out to make the clone and you both woke up at the same time, then you wouldn't know for sure. But if they just took a blood sample and made the clone while you watched, then you would know that you weren't the clone while the clone wouldn't be sure if he was or not.

To be fair, I don’t know if this is true or not, but there may be more twins in Britain than most countries because I know a few sets of twins and triplets, but they usually from in-vitro fertilisation. Because you’re more likely to get twins with in vitro fertilisation, I think perhaps because the NHS will provide this for free in our country to people who can’t have children. There’s probably more test-tube babies over here than in other places that don’t have free healthcare.
Art. Such an interesting topic. I remember looking through an art book in high school art class and coming across a 'painting' titled "female llama pissing in the wind". It was a canvas painted orange, just flat orange and nothing else. 🤷

The two doors/paths riddle (I'm so bad at explaining this so apologies if I mess up):
You can ask one of them, "Which path would the other guard say is the path to heaven?" It doesn't matter which guard you ask because they'll both give the same response.
The best way I can explain why is through voicing out their thoughts.
GUARD 1: "I must answer this question truthfully. I am guarding Hell. If this traveller asked the other guard where the path to Heaven was, he would point to my path instead of his - because he is a liar." *Guard 1 points to Guard 1's path*
GUARD 2: "I must answer this question with a lie. I am guarding Heaven. If this traveller asked the other guard where the path to Heaven was, he would point to my path because he is telling the truth: I am guarding Heaven. However, I cannot tell the traveller this as I must answer their question with a lie. Therefore, I must direct them to the path to Hell." *Guard 2 points to Guard 1's path*
Notice how they both point to the same path. This is the path you AVOID. Whichever path they respond with, go down the OTHER way and you'll make it to Heaven.

It’s rare people actually use TH-cam as a social network these days despite that being what it was built for really, I respect that. You don’t just do things for views or have a genre as such (although maybe British comedy as a main bulk) but I like that you just do you. I often comment suggestions based off how it might boost a channels performance, but I don’t think that’a your goal as such. I think you just like the social aspect of it? I’ve got so used to “content creators” I’ve almost become blind to the social aspect of TH-cam these days. I love that! It shows a lot about your character

11:01... Just ask a basic ("What's 2 +2" or "Does 2 + 2 equal 4") math question.
If the guard gets the answer right, he's guarding the 'heaven/truth' door... If he gets it wrong he's guarding the 'hell/lie' door.
2:34 I know it sounds crazy with how Karl set it up... But if you think about it, he's really onto something.
Say you decided to have yourself cloned. And the doctor says;
*_Okay, going to put you to sleep, and while you're under we're going to make an EXACT clone of you that will have all of your memories up until you go unconscious for this procedure._*
Now you and your clone wake up... You are you, but your clone has every single memory and looks as you do in every single way.
How are you to definitively determine which of you are which? Again, let's say you are the real you and the EXACT replica exists, _and both of you emerge from the procedure at the same time..._ How are you to prove anything when 'replica' has every single piece of knowledge that you do and legitimately thinks it's the original?
Only the doctor would know. But I wouldn't trust their word. Any doctor evil enough to clandestinely pull off such a procedure would likely tell the real one they are the replica variant just to observe the fallout.
Before watching, in case it hasn't been addressed, Ricky (though somebody I consider a borderline comedic genius... Along with Merchant) messed up the logical puzzle. He implied that the person in front of Hell door always lies and Heaven door always tells the truth . In which case, it's an easy solve with 'Is the sky blue?'. One question. If truth, Heaven. if lie, Hell. That's not the puzzle. Either of the guards could be lying or telling the truth and that has no indcation which door they're guarding. With those specific parameters, Ricky's solution now works and is the only way to determine what lies behind each door.
I get what Karl meant by 'How would I know which one I was?'. It wasn't quite as stupid as he made it sound, I know what he meant, he just worded it badly. Ricky and Steve thought he meant 'How would I know who I am?' when he actually meant 'How do I prove I'm the original if we're the exact same?' If you have the same memories and neither Karl or Suzanne (or anyone else) couldn't tell which was the original Karl, then is the 'real' Karl actually the real one?
It was a reasonable philosophical question, but his smooth brain made it sound like he didn't know who he was.
And Ewan McGregor is pronounced You-wun. It's a Scottish name so there was little chance of you knowing that haha
So he didn't explain it well, but basically the question to BOTH Door keepers is "What would the other door keeper say if you asked him what door he was guarding?" So the one 'Steve' guarding the actual door to heaven tells the truth saying that I do guard this door. Ricky (Who always tells a lie remember) is going to lie about what steves says so he says Hell, whereas Steve knows that Ricky would lie about his door and say it was Heaven because ricky always lies so Steve had revealed ricky lied and Ricky revealed that steve told the truth through their different answer to the same question as to what the other one would do.
Whereas if the question was Who's guarding heaven? Steve says me and Ricky says me and Who's guarding Hell? Ricky would say Him and Steve says Him, so you reverse and flip it so that their own restricted answer undoes the TRUTH!
Cloning is still topical issue and it's an interesting subject if you look it from a scientific point of view rather than through the eyes of Hollywood. I'm certainly no specialist. From what I've read reproductive cloning of humans is forbidden for many reasons, but cloning via nuclear transfer of different kinds of animals has been going on for quite some times. People clone their pets... The thing is the clone is not 100% identical to the donor (cloned animal) even genetically because there's still 2 (or so I've heard) % DNA in the mithochondria of the egg after they remove its nucleus. Anyway, the clone may not even look the same and of course it will act differently, because it's a different autonomous individual/animal who is born and brought up probably in different time and enviroment than the donor of the cell. Nobody doubts identical twins (natural clones in a way) are different people with their own character and dignity even if they are brought up in the same environment. Tenchincally I look at cloning like in vitro, but such that is problematic in many different ways.

I think what Karl means by "How do I know which one is me" is that in this scenario the clone has all your memories and stuff as well. A true 100% copy in every way. You both remember doing and experiencing the same things from the day you were born until you meet. The clone *is* you physically and mentally.
How would you know which one is actually you and which is the clone? You'll both be utterly convinced you're the "original". You say the real one always knows, but the clone knows exactly the same things you do and feels the same way.
I was going to say the same thing. Very often, they seem to try very hard to not get what Karl is saying so they can ridicule him. Plus I don’t think either of them are as smart and knowledgeable as they think they are.
But they never said it had all your memories, plus the original and the clone would have different experiences after the clone is made. The original not remembering being made as a clone, because he wasn't made as a clone

I'm with you, but I don't think that's how Karl heard it. They concurred when he asked if his doppelganger would be exactly the same. To me that sounds like they'll be the same mentally and physically. EXACTLY the same.
Even the clone would just wake up at the hospital with your memories up until the point where you went to hospital and got your DNA extracted for this experiment. It'd be as if you both lived the same life up until the point where there was suddenly two of you.
It's not where my mind would've gone if I was posed the same question as Karl, but that's why I love Karl. He has a way of seeing things from a different angle.

The two pieces of art that killed it for me was, Unkempt Bed and that shark in formaldehyde. Those are statements of ego, one feminine and the other masculine, equally ugly to me. I don't care about someone's unkempt bed and I hate to see any creature killed for art. That was horrible.

The thing with the doors is that by asking what the other person would say you guarantee that the answer is always a lie. Because the person who always tells the truth will answer (truthfully) with the lie that the other person would have given; the one who always lies would answer (falsely) with the opposite of what the truthful person would say, i.e. a lie. So whichever one you ask, they will answer with a lie about what the other door is, effectively giving you the truth about their own door. So if they answer “Heaven”, go through their door, if they answer “Hell”, go through the other door.
I think the way to tell a piece of art is crap is if the general conversation about it is whether it's art or not.

I agree with you about the art world. It's why I gave up doing my degree. I couldn't take the stress anymore and the tutors who I was working with seemed very pretentious and condescending that it made my blood boil. I eventually got so mad when I failed my second year because I had a feeling that the board of examiners were playing "favouritism" that I ended up falling out with my classmates and it drove me into terrible depression. It was exhausting so I left the damn place.

I'm 100% with you on the large portion of modern art that's just lazy nonsense. I like the more abstract things that still show skill, but so much of it is like you drank a pint of paint then it came out the other end in a big mess.
My mother was an artist and painted incredibly realistic wildlife paintings in acrylic/watercolour.. so the whole delusion of the art industry about unskilled random bollocks being called art is infuriating.

PPS: I think this is Steve's best anecdote in the podcast/cartoon 😂 You don't really get an impression of how much Steve can ramble on in these as much as on the XFM radio shows. The radio show starts off with Karl being pretty shy.. and then Ricky and Steve gradually tease more and more out of him.. then once they realise how endlessly fascinating he is the show shifts to mostly just talking to Karl. From that point on Steve is bewildered by Karl a lot of the time.. but now and again Karl is on holiday so they get Claire in to sub for him.. and then Ricky and Steve suddenly realise they have to talk all show again
