The other AA facet is better for supports

Both are good for supports. One is just more specifically tuned against Strength carries like CK and WK, or really bulky frontlines who are giving you trouble.
Overall AA is just a support at the end of the day. He's decent at mid but honestly, you're better off giving farm to any other Core who will do more with it, as AA can do amazing without items too, and you can safely farm lanes with your insane range so you can theoretically transition into a semi-carry build like the dude here does. Which is also what I do, I just go for glimmer and then rush glepnir+dragon lance and just start smashing fools. If they keep on I get my aghs online, I finish the Hurricane Pike and maybe invest into more attack speed or defense, depending on how the game is going.
