      Oh that’s awesome. We have a Blue Australorp and she’s my favorite hen we own! I’ve had her from our very first batch of chickens years ago. She’s over 5 years old now and still laying and doing great!

    Do I need to make different feed (with different supplemental nutrients) for my meat chickens? I’m new to raising meat birds and am doing Freedom Ranger Broilers. Thanks for your advice!

    Can you please provide links or recommendations for where you get these items in bulk?

    • @gloryhillshomestead
      @gloryhillshomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question! I don’t have links because we purchase from local grain mills. Ours is specific to our area. So I suggest calling local grain mills / farmer co-ops and seeing what they offer!

      I may have missed it, but how long do you soak the grains for?

    • @gloryhillshomestead
      @gloryhillshomestead  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @homesteadhomeschoolfamily normally just overnight, sometimes a day before. So I’d say 12-24 hours. But some people soak feed for longer. The longer you soak it, the more it will ferment. Hope this helps!

  • @RootsOfEden911
    @RootsOfEden911 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Use non chlorinated water when fermenting anything. If you have city water, you have chlorine.

    • @gloryhillshomestead

      Very good thing to note!! We are on a well, but that’s a great point!

    • @RichardGilbert2727
      @RichardGilbert2727 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No chlorine is ideal but fermentation starts almost immediately anyway.

    Question what type of meat chickens are you using?

    • @gloryhillshomestead
      @gloryhillshomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This time around we are using Cornish X 😊 however in the future we plan to mostly use Breese which is a dual purpose heritage breed

  • @paulcampbell8696
    @paulcampbell8696 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    How do you feed the soaked slot to the chickens? To put it in hers or do you just drop it on the ground to them? Does it still flow through feeders okay when it's been soaked?

    • @gloryhillshomestead
      @gloryhillshomestead  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question, thanks for asking! When we do soak the feed like this, we normally use the rubber feed buckets from tractor supply. They are essentially big black rubber bowls. We have not tried feeding this in traditional gravity fed feeders, but I would imagine that would probably get clogged up. A bowl has been easiest and most affective for us, but this recipe will work well without soaking too, and then could be used in a traditional feeder 😊 hope this helps!

    Hello! Love the video. I have a quick question.
    My local grain mill only has millet. Can I substitute millets for milo?

    • @gloryhillshomestead
      @gloryhillshomestead  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes however millet has a much higher carbohydrate percentage and a slightly higher protein level then Milo, There for depending on what else you’re adding to your feed you will just need to adjust the ratios to get your desired protein/ carbohydrates levels correct. Are you by chance grinding your chicken feed or are you leaving it whole for them?

    • @jacquelinemahoney6695
      @jacquelinemahoney6695 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much for the quick response. I was not able to find distiller grains. What nutrition does that bring to the feed?
      Also are cleaned graded oats? Or do they need to be steamed and rolled?
      Sorry for the bother. Thanks for your time

    • @gloryhillshomestead
      @gloryhillshomestead  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on if you are having all your feed milled or are you keeping it whole grains? What protein source are you using for the feed then?

    • @jacquelinemahoney6695
      @jacquelinemahoney6695 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gloryhillshomestead I am able to get all the ingredients you listed
      Except distiller grains (I’m going to get online or call local distillers today)
      And the oats are cleaned and graded.
      I was going to keep whole not milled
      If that doesn’t work I can always get rolled oats at tractor supply.
      what do you recommend? Getting the rolled at tractor supply or the cleaned grated oats will suffice?
      Do you think this is sufficient protein for layer hens?

    • @gloryhillshomestead
      @gloryhillshomestead  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @jacquelinemahoney6695 Graded oats will work just fine, you can also use soybean mill it is a 42% protein how ever we don’t use it just because we can’t confirm the soybean mill is non GMO.

    Please tell me HOW much dry grain per chicken I would have to give. Or per 30, whatever. For hens. I saw that you used 2-3 metal containers full but you were including meat chickens as well I think? Amounts per day per bird wasn’t clear. Thank you

    • @gloryhillshomestead
      @gloryhillshomestead  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question! Unfortunately that is an answer that will change from flock to flock. What ours eat, won’t be the same as every other chicken. It greatly depends on how much natural forage they have access to, how many bugs they eat, if they free range or stay in a run, what breed of chicken they are, etc.
      we always just play around with amounts until we find what fits the needs for our birds and how much they need each day. If they eat everything within a few minutes, I would up the amount you’re using. If it takes them several hours of the day to munch on, that’s a good amount.
      What we have been doing more recently is using large feeders so we only have to refill every few days. That is also a great option so you know they have enough, and they will just eat as much as they want / need.

    Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you source your grains locally or do you use an online supplier such as azure standard? Thanks again!

    How about minerals and probiotics? Do we need to add supplements?

    • @gloryhillshomestead
      @gloryhillshomestead  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We have a updated video that is coming out at 8am this morning, as far as pro bio we put those in their water and minerals are 100% depending on what they are lasting from the nutrition in your feed. You can never go wrong with adding a poultry nutri-balancer.

    Where do you source your items for your feed?

    • @gloryhillshomestead
      @gloryhillshomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! We go to feed mills / local coops. Some things we can get close to home, and others we drive about an hour to source from other places cause it’s still the closest place around. We just go about once a month and stock up on everything we’ll be needing!
      Do you have any feed / grain mills or farm coops by you?

      We put a vitamin/mineral booster in their water about twice a week. They also get calcium from oysters shells. Our chickens also get a few gallons of raw milk every few days and forage lots of grasshoppers and other bugs too. Seems to work well for us!
