I've watched this interview several times now and it is truly one for the record books. The true life story of a humble and passionate family man that made his own cultivated his own family life into a living legend. You are the "Best Example" of what a true human being should be. Rock on, Play on, and Farm on. You are the best of the best humanity has to offer. Hugs to all, best wishes and bless you and the family.
I got to do an album with Chuck at Capricorn Records 40 years ago, I know he wouldn’t remember but it was the thrill of my lifetime, a great and humble man.
I was lucky enough to meet Chuck many times when he played w/ Gov't Mule in the early 2000's. He was always so humble & so kind to me, answering questions, telling stories etc. What a legend and a beast of a musician.
Another excellent interview.... "You make your own luck". That is so true. And not only in music. It's about not being afraid to take chances. I identify with this 100 %... although it can be scary at times :-) Chuck is one of the many guys who shaped the musical landscape of one or two generations without people really knowing or acknowledging it. The love of music is what drives these guys.... not the money, not the fame... that's why they are still around!
What an articulate musician and great player. Many years ago I brought in a burned CD copy of the vinyl record "Sea Level" to my very own band rehearsal, one night. Everyone loved it. We proceeded to learn the wonderful instrumental Grand Larceny and played a pretty good version of that for the next 15 years in Vancouver club gigs. What a great band and fun song to play live. Our keyboard player got to wank out heavily on B-3 and then piano, when us two guitar players finally shut our pie-holes mid-song after the guitar solo and we took it down to just piano, bass and drums, for a spell.... It sort of became his signature cover song and people danced, always. Funny that the interview skipped over that period of his life, but lot's to cover, I suppose.
Hey Dom. "Luck is when Preparation meets Opportunity" - Henry David Thoreau wrote that I believe. Great work as always my Friend. Dave from Downunder 😬
I remember Chuck from the first time I met him at the first Sea Level gig in Virginia. My buddy Jimmy Nalls had completed the 4some on guitar, Lamar on bass & Jaimoe on drums. It was a long drive from Fairfax to Virginia Tech College in Blacksburg that night. Over the years they were together there were numerous other trips, always great shows. I really liked Lamar & Jaimoe both of them went out of the way to greet and make you feel appreciated. I remember Nalls telling me back when Chuck became bandleader for the Stones he was making $10K a night.. lol.
Whiskey Howl! (1972) It was the first time I heard Chuck --just right before he joined the Allman's. Check it out, his influence in that recording is remarkable.
I had a small distant connection to Chuck Leavell. His last version of Sea Level had Paul Brodeur on bass and Steve Kent on drums. They weren't touring much and were getting paid peanuts. Paul on bass got $50 a week while Chuck took $4000 a week and so did the road manager. Now is that really fair? Anyway we put a funky fusion band together called " Spank ". We were really good around Atlanta. If I had wanted to I could of met Chuck but I made friends and played with guys from other famous groups. Good keyboard players have always been in demand but the hard part is deciding what do I want to play and stick with it. Chuck is a great tasty player with lots of chops and he got lucky. I also have a strong feeling that he came from a very loving home and not an abusive hateful one like I did. Well great players are a dime a dozen and I never got a lucky break. So boo hoo. Hey I'm happy for him. I can still learn little things from his solos and so can you.
If not familiar with the Sea Level tune Grand Larceny (by Chuck and mentioned below) check out a live version at the Capitol Theater th-cam.com/video/pOuz-E5BdKc/w-d-xo.html Holy Motha of Gawd, can that lad play!
Hey Dave this was one fantastic interview with mom and Chuck Lavelle he’s an amazing person down to earth I wish you would have asked him about his band see level they were so awesome I still have all their albums and had them turn into CDs to hell with Clapton is God Chuck Lavelle is God
This is Dak I'm going to ask your number. You could split it between the two accounts and I will delete them one attached a time.. it's been my life long dream to play piano... I don't know how I looked you up but I'm loving it.. hope we can get together soon!
I don’t personally know Chuck, but he seems like a stellar human being, and is an even better musician

That is awesome. I love hearing stories like this. Mr. Leavell and Mr. Jones in bass, those two together are like nuclear fusion. Just amazing.

Sealevel !!!
C. Leavell
Magnus Hoffmann , Sealevel was a great band of Chuck’s ....
@@ThomasVogtFreiburg Dude, I know that. I was just refering to the fact that the band's name is a phonetic pun of Chuck's name.
WOW!
This guy is my favorite keyboardist and plays on many of my all-time best albums

Charismatic guy, and talented. He knows what level to play at (no pun intended) for each session and each combination.
Absolutely great interview with one of my heroes since the allman times. What a gentle sophisticated man - really enjoyed listening to him.

Thanks for sharing & yes...always good to keep learning!
“Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity". This quote, attributed to Roman philosopher Seneca.
Great interview, but how do you go 45 mins talking to Chuck Leavell and not discuss Sea Level...such a criminally under-appreciated band
I was just going to post the fact, they were so overlooked as Sea Level
Freddie North wow!
Wonder if he worked on any songs by Oscar Toney Jr or Sam & Bill on Capricorn

I just noticed that Bryan Cranston voice has a similar tone to Chuck´s voice.
