‪Of course no one will forget, but it makes it a whole lot easier to forgive when you’re able to own and take responsibility for your failures because that’s the hard part. Good on him for doing that in front of a camera instead of releasing a generic written statement.

While perhaps not the easiest explanation to accept, it's difficult not to listen given the clear, unambiguous, extremely obvious, and easily obtainable evidence -- which he, and the entirety of the Penske team -- would have been aware of. I find his explanation at least worth considering given the absolute lack of any effort to avoid detection. No sudden camera issues. No unexplained telemetry drops or data-logging failures. And the utterly pointless use of their "secret" advantage during a practice session in which it wouldn't make a single bit of sense or garner any advantage. Nothing. You have to admit that if they were truly working to secure an unfair advantage it was the most foolish of errors to use it during a practice session for all the world to see. Why would they risk exposing such an advantage during a practice session? It literally makes no sense.

@jeffkovacs6521 They caught it at long beach, their intention was to use it again. There are a bunch of DAG's staring at all the telemetry and know what's going on, and they didn't ask for the software to be fixed. They knew, Scott used it too. As for an advantage, see Colton's comments. He got some track position for sure, and Mclaughlin used it for defend his position too.

I've heard his name (obviously), but since I'm not an Indy Series fan (I'm a NASCAR fan...been one all my life).
On my Twitter feed...I see that there was a controversy connected to Josef Newgarden. So without much other info...I watched this press conference. I have to say, I believe him. Call me naive, or ignorant, but there just seemed to be an "air of honesty" about how he spoke and what he said. He didn't deflect. He owned it. And, I also believe that he's got a "long road to hoe" to gain the respect of "the paddock" as they call it.
It now has made me MORE interested in what is going to happen going forward for him and this series.
I thought that this press conference was needed and well executed...and sincere.
    N.B. - I'm a Chevy and Team Hendrick fan...so there's NO crossover love/belief.

You guys can’t act like you haven’t done the same in your lives. Nobody tried to hide this and the drivers took full responsibility. Listen to the other drivers who commented on it. Will Power (a teammate to Newgarden BTW) said I know what the rules are and that's why I never pressed the button. Pato O'Ward said I've been in INDYCAR for 5 years and the rules regarding P2P have been the same so I don’t know why they thought those rules had changed. Herta pretty much said he doesn't like racing against cheaters. I don't buy for a monent that the #2 team thought the rules had changed. I'd felt much better about the deal if he'd come out and said yes we did this, yes we gained an unfair advantage, yes we accept the penalty and fell that it was fair. Instead of saying we thought the rules changed he should've said the rules are what they are and we were afoul of them.

Sounds like the boss got through to him. I can't imagine sitting before Roger for that conversation....But for me? still a dk, that's my issue.
Good to see him say the fact - "I was cheating, and I knew I was cheating" THIS was my only point. I will go back to not liking him on a normal day.
But a bigger issue, these teams let Roger down, let Penske down, the teams and worst of all, the race fans.

Joseph, you pushed the button so quit lying. You too Scott. Only Will did nothing wrong. Joseph, you also had your Indy 500 win handed to you. As an American born in TN, you should be my guy, but there's always just been something shady about you and you asterisk Indy 500 win and your obvious lies and crocodile emotions here seals that for me.

If he was planning to cheat, why would he have used it in the warm up or practice and reveal it before the race? That makes no sense.

If this was say, Santino or Grosjean, and not for a win, or even a podium, would it get this much attention? I don't think so.
And sure, his boss owns the series. But that's not HIS fault.

    • @SALEENS7GTR5

This was a big deal because Penske and their team are historically dominant and popular. The same doesn't apply to Santino and Grosjean. But, Grosjean is popular, so I do easily see a world where if he was caught, it would make considerable news. But when Penske gets caught, it makes waves.
