  • The Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) is Colorado’s largest member of the Accipiter family. Goshawks nest in mature ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forests with tight canopy cover where they hunt other birds and small mammals. Because the species has very specific nesting requirements, re-uses nests from year to year, and is especially sensitive to human disturbance while nesting, Jefferson County Open Space Natural Resources Staff have been conducting surveys to locate the species on park property. These surveys allow staff to make informed decisions regarding Open Space projects such as new trails and forest management activities.
