I tried this same trail. Im 63, terrribly out of shape, and on a 26" mtb with bad brakes. And those rocks and the awful heat (early august) just about did me in. On the way back i crashed in the rocks at 1:40 thru 1:55. Was stopped and just fell over. No damage, just to the ego. Got a bettr bike. Need to practice.
If you condition yourself to riding in higher gears, over time you will find it beneficial. It appears you are pedaling too fast and wasting a lot of your energy. Sweetwater was one of my favorite trail systems to ride, mainly because I could make it out there after work and have sufficient time to complete a circuit before sunset. I have only ridden the spine twice because it simply didn't offer much appeal to me . . . I would rather take the back trail (Homestead Trail/Red Tail Ridge Trail). However, I would hit almost every other trail when I would ride . . . accept at the end of Homestead Trail, I would alternate each ride between Ocotillo Hill Trail and Red Tail Ridge Trail/Oxbow Trail. It's a nice trail system which provides an enjoyable ride.
My home trail is Honey Bee. I've been meaning to try Sweetwater...thanks for the video!

What bike do you ride? & Nice trail can't wait to get out there.
Kona Process 134
No backflips or crashes, such a let down =), looked like a fun ride though
